  • 14 year old publishes self portrait on the Web; discovers it is being used as the cover art for a porn DVD without permission

Unfortunately the girl is in a bit of a pickle legally because you must be over the age of 18 to use the deviantArt service. DeviantArt also specifically excludes "minors" from being allowed to upload content. Of course that means that the DVD cover producers can probably disclaim knowledge...

  • Sometimes.. fun stuff leads you on to serious stuff

A friend sent me the following screenshot tonight. Yes, the combination of advertisement and topic is funny, and ironic, but the article itself is also very good reading (btw, the jury is out regarding the advertisement.. despite my best efforts, I couldn't get that particular advertisement to appear...

  • AT&T online shopping site security breach.

"The telecommunications provider said that computer hackers illegally accessed credit card data and other personal information from several thousand customers who bought DSL equipment from the online store. The phone company said it would notify "fewer than 19,000" customers whose data was accessed during...

Ok, so tell me something I *don't* know: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/security/soa/Eighty_percent_of_new_malware_defeats_antivirus/0,2000061744,39263949,00.htm The time is long past that I have depended on any antivirus or antispyware product to clean a system properly, or detect all malware files. Instead...

  • MS Word Exploit - Administrator Rights - Oh my...

Some areas of the net are in a flap about the MS Word exploit that has been the focus of some publicity recently. Some sites are even advising that we should consider dumping MS Word in preference to OpenOffice . Come on guys. We shouldn't even be thinking about fighting this thing by moving to a different...

  • Firefox to introduce a regular patching cycle and a mega-patch

Firefox patched 24 vulnerabilities last week, 11 of which are "critical" (meaning your computer can be infected with no user interaction required), 4 are "high," 2 are "moderate" and 1 is "low." In what some are calling a 'catch up' with Microsoft's "Patch Tuesday", Firefox have announced that they will...

  • Follow-up on Messenger Plus! (Subtitle: There's a human being behind Messenger Plus)

My regular readers will know of the brouhaha (translation: uproar) about the new Sponsor Program for Messenger Plus! As a brief recap, the new Sponsor no longer installs a Search Bar or Passthrough Toolbar, nor does it change your home page. But, the pop-up windows remain, as do the unremovable favorites...

I've received an alert that Patchou's posse know about my blog entries about Patchou's new Sponsor Program: http://www.msghelp.net/showthread.php?tid=58047 This will be interesting - I wonder if the apologists will make it past the "but its optional" excuse and start to consider what the Sponsor Program...

  • TrendMicro and the Windows Genuine Advantage Tool... all fixed

I'm pleased to report that Trend's online scan no longer flags the Windows Genuine Advantage Tool registry key as a browser hijacker. I haven't tested myself, but can tell you that the original correspondent at Aumha who brought the problem to my attention has posted that the problem no longer occurs...
