Executive Summary

Microsoft is aware of nine fraudulent digital certificates issued by Comodo, a certification authority present in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities Store on all supported versions of Microsoft Windows. Comodo advised Microsoft on March 16, 2011 that nine certificates had been signed on behalf of a third party without sufficiently validating its identity. These certificates may be used to spoof content, perform phishing attacks, or perform man-in-the-middle attacks against all Web browser users including users of Internet Explorer.

These certificates affect the following Web properties:

The company introduced the feature on Wednesday, saying it was one of the most requested capabilities by users.

"One aspect of controlling what you share is the ability to have a copy of your information no matter whether you've shared it, whether that is on Facebook or any other service on the web," the company said in a statement.

"[Facebook's] Platform has been a powerful way for you to remain in control over sharing your information and to have social experiences all over the web. Download your information will build on this and allow people to download a copy of their information, giving people more control over their ... experience."

Users and competitors such as Google have criticized the social-networking website for keeping its members' information largely inaccessible to the rest of the web. Facebook makes a good portion of its revenue by targeting ads to users based on information found in their profiles.

Allowing users to download their profiles, including photos, wall posts, status updates and messages, could clear the way for them to upload the information to a competing service. Third parties such as Google, however, will still not have access to profiles unless users make them available. http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2010/10/06/facebook-groups-downloading.html

Facebook's Canadian users top 16 million

Privacy concerns don't seem to have scared Canadians off Facebook. Canada passed the 16 million users mark in May, according to research firm Inside Network. More than 912,000 Canadians signed up for the social networking site last month, a six per cent increase in membership Inside Network says an estimated 47.9 per cent of Canadians are on Facebook, making Canadians some of the heaviest users of the site in the world. Overall, Canada is the fourth largest market on Facebook, on a per capita basis, behind Iceland, Norway and Hong Kong. About 59.6 per cent of Iceland's population has a Facebook profile. But among larger countries with at least 10 million citizens, Canada is No. 1. There has been speculation recently that Facebook is approaching 500 million users worldwide, although officially, it has only stated that it has more than 400 million users. Inside Network says Facebook now has about 465 million users in total and might be weeks away from hitting the half-billion mark. Facebook has averaged about 500,000 new users daily for the last year but spiked in May with about 30 million new members, Inside Network says. Facebook does not give specific membership numbers, but Inside Network uses data provided to advertisers to gather insights about the social networking site.

The website will allow users to completely opt out of the Facebook platform, which will block any and all third parties from viewing their data, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said at a news conference on Wednesday at Facebook's Palo Alto, Calif., headquarters.

The option will be retroactive, he added, so users can continue to use the site but wipe any information that may have previously been shared with third parties.

Facebook will also simplify its privacy settings by allowing users to decide who sees their information all on one page.

"When people have control over what they share, they want to share more. When people share more, the world becomes more open and connected," Zuckerberg said. "Over the past few weeks, the No. 1 thing we've heard is that many users want a simpler way to control their information. Today we're starting to roll out changes that will make our controls simpler and easier."

The company said the new controls were the result of consultations held with U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and a number of privacy and consumer advocate groups,

Facebook currently has more than 400 million users around the world.

The journal Nature surveyed 784 Chinese researchers and found that more than three-quarters of them use Google as their primary search engine.

More than 80 per cent of the survey's respondents said they use Google to find academic papers and more than half of them use the Google Scholar tool to search scientific literature.

David Bousfield, a London-based information and publishing consultant, told Nature that the findings are typical of scientists working in most countries in the world.

"Google and Google Scholar have become indispensable tools for scientists," Bousfield said.

The companies announced Thursday that the partnership has been approved without restrictions by the Justice Department and the European Commission. Under the 10-year agreement, Microsoft's Bing search engine will process search requests and steer search-related ads on Yahoo. Yahoo is due to get 88 per cent of the revenue generated from the ads placed alongside the search results on its sites.

The companies said they will begin implementing the deal in the coming days by shifting Yahoo's search platforms to Microsoft. They hope to move most advertisers and publishers before the 2010 holiday season, but may wait until 2011 if necessary, and expect to complete the process by early 2012.

On Wednesday, Microsoft is releasing a "beta" test version of the Outlook Social Connector. The add-on software, which was first discussed last November, adds a new pane to the main email reading screen on Outlook. When a user clicks to read an email message, the new pane fills up with the sender's most recent social-networking activities. Those could include the addition of a professional contact on LinkedIn or a "what I'm doing now" status update from Facebook.

Microsoft has a mixed record when it comes to web trends. The company's free Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger programs are widely used, but its Windows Live blog/social network didn't pick up much steam in the face of competition from Facebook. In this case, a small startup called Xobni has already built an Outlook add-on that combines inbox search with content from Facebook, LinkedIn and others.

The signs of an online revival are emerging even while advertising in print and broadcasts remains in a slump that has triggered mass layoffs, pay cuts and other upheaval.

Internet advertising was just about the only bright spot in the third-quarter reports of two major U.S. newspaper publishers, Gannett Co. and McClatchy Co.

Meanwhile, the companies still are dealing with steep declines in print ads — an imbalance most analysts predict will take years to address.
