It takes a little while to acclimatise to the curve, but it is better as one's hands are better spaced.

The good features:

It is a spill-proof design, having drain holes which take liquids away from the inner workings.

The wrist rest is easy to keep clean, and doesn't go tacky like some of the other keyboards.

It is quite compact, a feature that actually works against it re #1 in the bad features.

The keys have a light touch and are not noisy.

The mouse fits the hand well, and scroll wheel is very light and more precise than other reviews suggest. It also works on virtually any surface, even carpet.

The bad features:

The F keys are small and could do with being separated slightly into three banks of 'four' keys which would make it easier to find F4, F8 and F12. These F keys are used by the system where you often have limited time to find and press them.

If you spill anything 'gooier' than water on the two top rows, removing the keys is not the easiest of tasks and requires an exceptionally light touch. The main keys are easy to remove.

The mouse has a glossy top which marks very easily.

Overall, I like it

Rating: ☺☺☺☺☺

VGA and chipset cooling for older stuff.. or maybe even newer stuff..

The photo shows a Vantec Iceberg CCB-A1A.. Officially, it is a heatsink/fan assembly for VGA or mobo chipsets. If what you see is a bottle cap fitted with a small capacity fan, 3.5 cfm, you would be nearer the mark.

I removed the heatsink and broken fan from my nVidia N6600 video card and replaced it with what you see. Speedfan 4.46 reported a temperature of 74°C - at REST.

Studying the assembly, I got to thinking that if I could remove the fan from the bottle cap, it may just fit inside the original heatsink. Removing the two screws on top reveals a fan in it’s own cradle, very easy to remove.

Having removed the broken fan from the original heatsink, I pressed the housing lightly into it, and then fixed the fan and red top down with slightly larger screws than were in use on the bottle cap.

The result? Speedfan reported a temperature of <strike>62°C</strike> 57°C at rest. The only downside is that the fan has only two wires and will not report rotational speed.

The fan plus cradle requires a 50mm diameter space to accommodate it, and fins on the original heatsink wide enough spaced to accept small self tapping screws.

The ‘bottle cap’ can be recycled along with your pop cans and aluminium foil food containers.

Reviews on the TigerDirect website for the above product were good, but I suspect that they were all written because the people assumed that a rotating fan is an unmitigated success. Strangely, reviews for the copper version were not so good, and one of the reviewers had done exactly as I have and with similar acceptable results.

Note that I would have been in the dark too, had it not been for Speedfan showing me what was really happening. I have been a fan of Speedfan ever since it first appeared, considering it to be an invaluable utility which I install on ALL computers which come through my hands.

Speedfan.. http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Ivy Bridge: Intel’s New Processor Features (3rd Generation i3, i5, and i7)

Intel has finally released the new 3rd generation series of Intel Core processors. It was working fine but the Toshiba’s primary user was having problems with Facebook and some of its features and functions.

I explained that the Internet connection was fine and that it wasn’t directly due to a Windows 7 or NIC bug, but in order to prove the point, I did it anyway.. Sure enough, the issue was still there.

The refresh went quite well apart from the boring period with seemingly endless Toshiba ‘Configuring the system’ screens. Finally, I managed to get the main stuff back on, and then copied documents, favourites etc into the user public folders for later distribution to the regular folders within Windows. As anybody who has done this for family members will know, I had the usual ‘where is this, where is that’, but it was reported that the machine appeared to be smoother in general operation.

One interesting aspect was that all hardware drivers were upgraded from the originals. I really didn’t expect that, and thought that I would have to go hunting for the latest Realtek NIC stuff. All good, eh.

And the Facebook game issue? Well, had the user updated Adobe Flash player when asked by the system, there would never have been an issue. Hey, I am not the user. When I access the Internet, I use IE 9. not Firefox or any of the other browsers, and I always update Java and Adobe Flash when in IE 9.

Anybody using Firefox can do the same but it isn’t going to be me. The Facebook games are written and optimized for Firefox, but that is not my fault..

BTW, the Realtek RTL8191SE which caused issues for over two years (dropped connections mainly) has only dropped connection once since the installation of the latest drivers.

I like Toshibas. They feel like they are well out together. Memory and hard drive access is good from underneath, and the keyboard and NIC can be removed easily too.

This next bit applies to Toshiba and other laptop makes. Would it really be too much trouble to make removal and replacement of the fan and the power jack easy? Having to pay criminal amounts to a computer service dept for items which just plug onto the motherboard has always frustrating for what is essentially a very simple job.

The Toshiba fan requires that everything is stripped out of the case. It doesn’t have to be that way..

No more playing with Windows 8 CP..

I booted the drive with the Windows 8 installation a couple of days ago and all it wanted to do was disk check all three drives. Eventually, Windows 8 started and I played around for a while.

Today, I attempted the same and everything went to plan except that Windows 8 would not start at all. Further investigation found that the Seagate 160 was running quite hot and obviously not well. Yes, I ran a Seagate extended disk check and that said the drive was fine. Yeah right. Somehow I just knew it would do that even though the drive has never been reliable.

So that’s it until I have the pennies to replace the drive. I am hoping that I can do it before Windows 8 Beta is released, but I may not even be in time for the RTM. One thing I am not going to do is overwrite Windows 7 until I have found a way to overcome Windows 8 shortcomings..

A new connection..

I have traded in my old Scientific Atlanta DPC2100 cable modem. Rogers have a new modem which will allow for a nominal 18mb download on their cable networks, and my old modem can’t do that apparently. although I have seen it reach that level on a good day. It will also have wireless capability. Trouble is that I don’t get the10gb extra download if I don’t take the new modem/router. and it only costs me an extra $3 per week..

On the back of the DPC2100, I had a D-Link DIR 628 running at 2.4mhz delivering Internet to two wireless machines and my production machine which is always hard wired. So, what do I have now?

Ta-da… a Cisco DPC3825 8x4 DOCSIS 3.0 Wireless Residential Gateway. Sounds impressive, I know, but it is one cheap looking piece of kit.

The next noticeable features are the lack of external antennas and the provision of ‘feet’ on the side such that it can stand up on end. It doesn’t work so well in portrait mode which is probably why the only easily readable text on the front is in landscape.

The LEDs are super small, a green colour, and are all labelled but not such that you can easily read what each LED signifies. LED labelling is al portrait because there is more front panel real estate for it to fit in.

If you like the look of US auto interiors, you are going to love having this modem/router on your desk.

Aesthetic appeal = 1

Performance is ok but wireless signal is a little weak compared to the DIR 628. I do like the 1000/100/10 ports on the back. If only the two wireless connected computers had more that 54mb capacity, they might be of value. The Toshiba can manage 160mb but the RTL8191SE is broken and the laptop is presently running on a D-Link G132 USB adapter. The other desktop has DWL G520, the PCI version of the G132, both nominally 108mbps but only 54mbps for Vista and Windows 7.

Performance = 5

Setting it up was easy enough, but I wish that the function to change the main password, which Cisco insist that you should do, would have some way of telling you that the confirmation password was NOT the same as the one directly above. It will quite happily save the changes and lock you out. I had to use the reset button FOUR times to be able to get back in.

Once there, main headings are obvious in their meanings and everything is easier to find than in the D-Link DIR 628 setup. There is an online manual which can be downloaded and saved in PDF format which is ok, if a little long winded. It explains as much as Cisco consider that the average home user would understand

Administration = 8

One thing I did notice about it.. setting up the network printer (hosted by the main machine) was very quick. I was surprised at how quickly it appeared , and within seconds, each of the wireless computers had produced a test sheet. I will write more on this at a later date.

Will I be keeping it? I don’t know. If I do not see an improvement in overall speed fairly soon, I will take it back and exchange it for my old DPC2100. I have to admit to never really liking Cisco products, so I am giving it some time to prove itself.

For now, the DIR 628 will be put into cold storage and I will not let it go just yet. While it only has 100/10 mbps Ethernet ports, It broadcasts a signal way better and it has 5Ghz capability. I am still toying with the idea of putting a dual band wireless adapter in the laptop when I get around to fixing it proper, and upgrading the desktop to dual band too

All set up and ready to go.. down?

If you entered computing during the XP age, you missed out on all of the fun. Here is a piece of computer world history for you.. The title of the video says it all..

This spawned more humour like this photo on the right. It was particularly popular with Mac users. I must admit that when I first saw it, I did smile. Is it still funny? Not really, because computers and operating systems are way more stable than they used to be.

The days of unrecoverable Application Errors, General Protection Faults and the more specific BSOD of late are nothing like as numerous as they once were. Only users running ‘too good to be true’ utilities will still be ‘au fait’, but the photo on the right might make a comeback, albeit in slightly enhanced form, so reserve your laughter please..

Remember the worlds biggest tablet? Didn’t we all want one? What happened t the Microsoft Surface? Did you ever see one at PC World or Best Buy?. At the time, it looked great. Watch the video before continuing.

LOL. Did you like this?

Did you or anybody you know who saw the original promotional videos for the MS Surface ever see it as a replacement for a home computer or home based business computer? No?

Combine it with the keyboard above but enhanced to include an ‘F4’ key and you have the ideal Windows 8 home computer if you were to believe today’s hype.. Do you still think that it isn’t a smart idea because that is what you are being sold on. The only difference is that it is a pocketable 7” screen now. Did I say ‘pocketable’’? If you have enough spare cash to buy a tablet and matching smartphone, the space created in your pockets by spending the cash should be enough to fit both devices.

Just like the Microsoft Surface, have you noticed that in all ads and demos for tablets, the primary function seems to be photo viewing? TV’s Shopping Channel and YouTube seem to concentrate more on pushing photos around, a bit of exciting exchange in Facebook, maybe a fast drive via a ‘Need for Speed’ style arcade game, or the occasional video call. Did I say ‘video call’? Only if you have a matching smartphone do you get video calls. They don’t tell you that on the ads.

I have heard that these tablets are a great way to pass the time while waiting to be seen by your doctor, before you are due to go into a business meeting, or that awful period of time you have to wait between checking in your baggage and actually boarding the airplane. All great uses, but when you get home and your kids want to produce a poster for the ‘lemonade stall’ at the local fair, what are you going to use?

Is your boss going to believe the excuse that you were working out the best route to the business meeting with a competitor across town or will the ‘competition’ numbers on the side of your ‘car’ give the game away?

The Microsoft Surface, while never having been put into production, is not the dumb device that the parody above makes it seem. The big TV news stations have screens onto which they can swipe all kinds of data and information, moving it around, resizing, comparing weather or political polls or any other data.. If the price is ever reduced enough and made to withstand the rigours of daily continual use, you could be seeing restaurant menus incorporated into the tabletop, along with an ordering and paying facility built in.

There is definitely a place for the technology, but not everywhere. The mechanisms to produce the data are still to be found on the old desktop operating systems. This is the one area which SHOULDN’T change.

The smart ones who still want to create and view will not be dumping their desktops and laptops with proper ‘desktop’ operating systems anytime soon.. For the rest who are content to have everything delivered to them on a plate, and a very small plate at that, love and embrace Metro.
