Powershell's social responsibility

The world is not as polite anymore as it was years ago. People are forgetting what was called “good behavior / manner”. And Powershell is entering the world and starting to monopolize in the world of scripting languages.

I think Powershell should show some level of social responsibility. And today, I’m taking action to change it:

I, Ulf B. Simon-Weidner, propose hereby that Powershell should be forced to show more social responsibility. Therefore I propose two actions:

Any command executed should, by default, set the –whatif parameter
(This would prevent the commands from executing, it'll only tell us what it would do)

To really execute a command, the –please Parameter must be used, which will revoke the –whatif parameter.

Wouldn’t this be nice?

Windows 7 and my new rig

I finally managed to get hold of the RTM of Windows 7 (yes, terrible download speeds – go figure).

But it’s here and i’m still loving it.

I was a bit concerned about putting it on my new rig – the Alienware M17x – due to drivers etc etc.

It wasn’t worth the hassle to stress about it so i jumped into it – some 24 minutes later i was ready to log in.

Got myself the drivers (mostly for Vista) and got my hardware set up. Then got a modded inf for the graphics and i was ready to roll.

Here’s the system details screen, showing my T9600 and the amount of ram the laptop has (going to put another 4Gb in there soon i think)

Now, i haven’t overclocked anything yet, so the CPU, Ram and graphics are all stock standard right now.

CPU: T9600 @ 2.8Ghz
RAM: 4.0Gb
HD: 2 x 320Gb 7200rpm in RAID 0
Gfx: NVidia 9400M + 2 x Nvidia 260M GTX in SLI (hybrid)

Shame that the disk and ram lets it down – but 5.8 isn’t bad from a laptop!

Dramas over the weekend – Daughter gets hospitalised

It was an ordinary weekend which turned into one of those that you simply just want to forget and put behind you.

Sunday afternoon, we had a big seafood BBQ (Christmas in July was the theme) at a friends place – so the wife, myself and the kids packed up and migrated there for the day.

Around 6pm my youngest daughter crawled up onto an office chair to do some drawing at a desk – she loves drawing and colouring in (she’s 3 btw). When she wanted to get down again she slid off the chair, but as she was about to put her feet down the chair must have pushed backwards and she lost her footing, dropping the few inches/cms to the ground. Unfortunately what also happened was that while loosing her footing she knocked her head on the table edge.

No major outcry – so it couldn’t have been that bad a knock. Or so we thought.

30mins after coming home she started mumbling and throwing up – 5 times she threw up within 10 minutes.

We checked her for bumps and bruises but couldn’t see any but the wife, ever vigilant, asked me to look up concussions for children and we found that she matched 2-3 of the symptoms.

so the wife called the after hours emergency services and after a brief discussion was told to bring Blair into the emergency room.

Since we have two kids, one of us had to go and the other stay with the oldest. The wife went. On the way to the emergency room, my youngest threw up once more.

Anyways, wife managed to get her bundled into the emergency room and sat down for a bit of a wait – there wasn’t that many there, but it soon filled up.

After two ops sessions my wife was told that they had to keep my daughter overnight and she needed to have a drip inserted – urggghh…Blair isn’t too keen on needless to put it mildly. She categorises doctors into two categories – good doctors, who doesn’t do needless/jabs and bad doctors, who does do needless/jabs.

The wife sits down to wait as there has to be a bed “free” first.

In the meantime she calls me to ask her to bring her an overnight bag so i drop my oldest off at a friends place while i drive down to the hospital with it. Get back home and pick up the oldest again. Now, it’s nearly 11pm.

at 1:30am they still hadn’t seen a doctor…2:30am passes by..finally, at 3:30am a doctor shows up after an examination it was judged that my daughter had gotten a mild concussion from the knock on the head.

I have to admit I admire my wife’s vigilance and her stamina – sitting upright for that amount of time, holding a child, is hardly a walk in the park.

At around 11am or so, a third examination is done and since Blair’s perked up to her regular, normal self, she’s sent home.

I know kids are resilient but the slight knock rocked her enough to concuss her head – needless to say, no more climbing chairs in the near future. The scare alone is enough to make a parent grow old overnight!

Luckily she’s back on her feet again, drawing and just being a happy child again – but it was a scare that we’d rather have missed out on…Nothing sets those parental emotions into swing as much as these types of incidents.

Hopefully sparks will not fly in a literal sense, but we will give it a go for the 2009 Microsoft "Sparks will Fly" challenge

Dropping my coffee intake to 0

Uhmmm – one of the decisions I’ve made recently has been to drop my, according to others, excessive coffee intake and replace it with something a bit more gentle.

Tea….

I’m now on day 7 of no coffee at all, started last Monday and obviously it had a very fast impact.

On last Thursday i had a comment from one of my colleagues – asking me if i was ok since I'd been VERY quiet Monday through to Wednesday?

I honestly didn’t think I'd been any different than my regular, “normal” self in the office, but obviously it must have registered somewhere.

I admit, i had a thunderous headache Tuesday afternoon – most likely from the caffeine withdrawal.

So, i replaced it with tea..my current recipe for a good cup is:

1 tea bag of either Chai tea (Ceylon), Herbal tea (Herbal Infusions, Twinings) or Green tea
1 slice of lemon
1 teaspoon natural honey

As far as missing the coffee – yes, but i think it’s more the habit of having the coffee with me around the office than the actual coffee itself right now.

It’s all a step into making my life a little bit healthier – next step includes finding a way to drop those extra kilos that’s weighing me down.

I’m literally going to take it slowly and just drop things off the list one at a time. Considering taking up Taekwondo though with my knee issues I might have to take that VERY slowly.

Hola a todos y antes de nada perdón por postear esto aquí. El tema creo que es lo suficientemente importante, si no para todos al menos para mí.

Desde hace casi dos años, un grupo de buena gente capitaneados por mi primo Guille y la indomable Eva, y entre los cuales me incluyo (aunque no en lo de buena gente :-P), están realizando campañas para intentar ayudar a Juanma, un niño que sufre una extraña enfermedad llamada síndrome de Alexander. Hasta aquí todo es normal si nos abstraemos de la tragedia familiar que está viviendo esta gente, pero lo que he leído hoy no tiene nombre: Resulta que un cantante bastante conocido llamado David Bisbal ha realizado un concierto sin cobrar un duro para que todos los ingresos vayan destinados a la búsqueda de un cura para Juanma. Sin embargo ciertos individuos (por llamarlos de una manera) no han renunciado a cobrar a su parte del pastel, y se han llevado nada más y nada menos que 5.000 euros, cantidad que supera con mucho lo que muchos de nosotros hemos podido aportar.

Yo no se vosotros pero mi indignación es total. En los tiempos que corren, mucha pobre gente ha ayudado con lo poco que tenían a esta causa… para que ahora venga esta gentuza (porque no tienen otro nombre) y haga esto. No hay derecho hombre!

La familia de Juanma pelea por salvar su vida y la SGAE llega poniendo el cazo con su música fúnebre de caja registradora.

De los 50.000 euros recaudados por unos padres en filántropo concierto para salvar al hijo -aquejado del Síndrome de Alexander-, la sociedad que representa a los músicos ha obligado a la familia a desembolsarle 5.000.

La tajada de la vergüenza, por otra parte legal, es cosa de la Sociedad General de Autores y Editores, que el pasado 16 de abril ató por escrito a la madre y le arrancó el 10% de las ganancias que tuviera el 'show', la condición indispensable para que el evento pudiera realizarse. Se vendió todo el papel. El cantante David Bisbal no cobró. El concierto fue benéfico para todos. Menos para la SGAE.

En el medio y sin saber ni media de esta historia, anda un crío de cinco años. Tiene una letal enfermedad neurodegenerativa única entre un millón de personas. Los pacientes acaban en estado vegetativo. Los niños afectados mueren en torno a los seis. A la guitarra, con todos ustedes, Juanma. Enterarse por la prensa del evento y sacar lustre a sus carteras de cuero negro fue todo uno. Decía el periódico que tocaba David Bisbal en un pueblo almeriense. Daba igual que el concierto fuese benéfico. El delegado de la SGAE metió la calculadora dentro de la maleta y allá se fue agitando la saca de monedas.

"El hombre me llamó cuando estaba con el niño en rehabilitación en la clínica Fisiomarina. Me dijo que teníamos que vernos, y allí se vino", evoca Toñi, la madre. "Me explicó que había que dar una señal antes del concierto para que pudiera hacerse. Y que era ineludible firmar una solicitud de autorización a no ser que el autor cediera sus derechos. Así que firmé".

El concierto fue el 25 de abril en el Teatro Auditorio de Roquetas de Mar y funcionó como un tiro. En un día se vendió todo el aforo, 1.226 entradas entre 40 y 60 euros cada una. David Bisbal renunció a ganar nada. Eso sí, según lo suscrito, la décima parte de lo recaudado sería para la Sociedad General de Autores.

El mordisco duele más porque se da en manos callosas y con olor a lejía de trabajadores. El sueño de una ama de casa y un padre camionero que no tenían nada y que �hucha aquí, concierto benéfico allá y partido homenaje acullá� han rascado ya 1,4 millones de euros para tratar de salvarle la vida a Juanma.

La obsesión por la hucha empezó desde que la madre contactó con el doctor Albee Messing, un científico estadounidense del Waisman Center (en la Universidad de Madison), quien entonó su particular 'yes, we can' con las probetas en la mano. De los 3.000 fármacos con los que Messing ha trabajado para combatir el síndrome, 10 son "altamente prometedores" contra la enfermedad. Desarrollar cada uno cuesta más de 170.000 euros.

"Cuando se fue el de la SGAE me puse a llorar. Cada vez que me acuerdo de los 5.000 euros me duele el estómago. Porque hay gente que está ayudando a la causa como buenamente puede, ¿sabes? Una señora de la limpieza del Pryca ingresa cinco euros al mes; hay una chica en Irún que hace pulseras y las vende a un euro... No me sobra nada para luchar por mi hijo. Pero ellos quieren sus 5.000 euros".

La SGAE se excusó ayer apelando a lo que es su "obligación" siempre y cuando el autor de las canciones (y Bisbal no lo es) no ceda los derechos de las mismas. "Una cosa es que el cantante renuncie a su caché y otra, el uso de su música cuando ésta no es del cantante". Así que la familia, que iba a montar otro concierto en Vícar, lo ha suspendido todo. A la busca de cantautor que sí pudiera ceder su obra.

Ocho de los 10 fármacos ya están desarrollándose gracias al maná que viajó a Madison desde Almería. Los primeros resultados de las pruebas de Messing se exponen en julio. Los experimentos comenzarán en adultos y, de ser buenos los resultados, Juanma irá después, timonel de los pequeños.

La travesía es el día a día en el hogar y Toñi no deja que el barco haga aguas. Veamos. Juanma ya logra llamarle "bi" a la bici, "lo entiende todo" y anda de puntillas. Hace poco se dio un golpe en la cabeza jugando, dañándose aún más ese cerebro de cristal. Con lo que el crío ve pasar la vida con un casco de taekwondo.

Fue la hermana mayor la que vino con el cuento. Hay unas niñas en el colegio que le han dicho que su hermano se va a morir. Madre dice que no y le canta. A la guitarra, con todos ustedes, Juanma.
