Clouds in Avatar related to Flight Simulator.... at least in some way....

“When I worked for Microsoft in the early 2000's, one of the main features I developed was a cloud rendering system for Flight Simulator. I published a couple articles about it afterwards.

In 2007, I got an email from someone working on special effects for a movie. We have a friend in common, so we had exchanged emails previously about computer graphics. Now his team was reviewing previous work in cloud rendering, and my system came up on the list. He alerted me to a broken link on my cloud page.

I thanked him. He didn't end up using my real-time cloud techniques, but we kept in touch over email now and then.

This week he emailed me saying (paraphrased), "You may not remember me asking about your cloud paper a long time ago, but the movie finally came out. If you see it, check out the clouds."

I thought to myself, "Oh, what is this movie?"

The movie is Avatar!!!”

Oh, and Niniane…. go and see it… its amazing!

For the past few days, my house has been having power problems…. Lights turning off and on, power tripping out in the office and the like. I called the Irish power providers (the E.S.B.) on Sunday night to complain with a couple of beers in tow… it seemed to work, because a nice fellow from the E.S.B turned up on my doorstep an hour later at 10pm!

Now that’s good service!

Finally we managed to get the problem to reproduce itself at about midnight after many tests. My previous explanation of “my house looks like it has a poltergeist” did not cut it… I was never so happy to have a fault in my life; the poor guy honestly thought I was making it all up.

They spent the entire day disabling all the neighbours’ power supplies to finally figure out that “because I have the best power supply in the area, I am the earth for everyone”.

Brilliant.

So… where the hell was I going with this post…? Oh yes… I wanted to put you all in the direction of Hal’s post. It cheered me up to no end after these few days of power outage hell.

I have missed a whole lotta stuff....

For the last 4 months I have been disconnected from the web and life in general while I moved the office and the home…

In fact I am still not fully connected to the web as I have no fixed IP address and am behind a proxy that the wireless provider has been promising to open for over a month now. The problem is that here in Ireland you have no choice but to go with the local wireless broadband provider so you are over the barrel so to speak. Anyway, that situation is a whole other story.

I do feel like a bit of a let-down to the community in regards to both Small Business Server and Flight Simulator as I really have not had time to do too much. I guess sometimes real life does have to get in the way. Over the coming few months I aim to get back into the swing of things and get back to keeping you updated like before. Anyway, I am going on a bit… so here is a list of things that I missed… and you may have too!

Adrian put up some more posts on Performance Art which are well worth a read.

Hal Bryan seems to be on some drug that allows him to type a thousand words a minute and he is filling up the Windows Live Spaces server with various interesting ramblings that you should read.

Arno has been working on a ton of stuff, and both of us will soon be working on something cool with fsdeveloper.com <<< that is when I get a few hours!

There is more, but I have just been called away to sort yet more house problems…. more soon, I promise….

It seems I bought my IMac at just the right time. Not only can I get all the Mac Benefits of video / image but now I can run Windows XP on it as well using the public beta Bootcamp! :)

Impressive.... I have yet to see if I can get Flight Simulator running ;)

Well, FS is installed and works with good performance! :) Excuse the crappy picture, flash etc... but it gives you an idea.

A friend of mine sent me these pictures today.... Totally amazing flying skills but not something I would like to try! Apparently this is the "Nissan Harvard Team" and was performed at the Marula Sun Power Races. Frans did a great job of capturing these images.

Two MVP summits ago, I was hassling the FS team to get blogging.   By the time of the last summit, a lot were already and since then many more have started. (All the links are on the right side of this blog). The SBS Team have many blogs and Feeds all listed on our community page.

Anyway, I would like to know the answer to this question....    and I suspect that Robert Scoble is the man to answer this...

   What team in Microsoft has the largest percentage of bloggers including the MVP's?

The SBS Team and the FS Team must be right up the charts.....   Surely?
