Why do you .... help?
Thu, Oct 26 2006 0:22

This may seem a really odd question, but I am trying to understand, (and help others understand) the part of the culture that brings us to the Internet and in particular, to forums, blogs, wikis and other forms of social software.

So here's the question:

For those of you who spend time helping (if you do, then you understand what I mean)*, why do you do it?

Thank you!

Please reply in a comment here. Thanks
Please reply in this thread at The Buzz

* let's say that for this discussion I am specifically addressing folks who put many times more effort into helping others, than consuming others' help.

Help for a hard working student and Tablet PC Community contributor Sagan
Wed, Oct 25 2006 1:52
I'm quoting this in from a post on GBM
Eric (below) has been a solid contributor to the community since at least mid-2004. Any chance somebody knows somebody  who might be able to help?
Oh yes - you may know Eric as Sagan
I'd like to ask the tablet pc folks out there if anyone is interested in donating a brand new tablet as an award to a student.  I had a donor ($1500) whose company was purchased, and the new owner doesn’t want to help.  It’s 10 days until the conference and I now have no tablet as the prize for the best undergraduate research poster, and I really am pulling out all the stops to regain this great prize.

The conference is the Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society.  We expect over 2000 attendees and have nearly 150 student posters to judge.  The donor will get as much advertising as I can muster at this late date, and a W9 form for their tax return-we’re a nonprofit organization, so it’s a complete write off.

If you are interested, know someone who is interested or have any ideas, please contact me at:

TabletPCBuzz is Back
Thu, Oct 12 2006 17:17

Quoting from the Buzz front page: http://tabletpcbuzz.com

Greetings from the revived Buzz! This is Dennis Rice subbing for Spencer for now.

So as the old saying goes, "Do you want the good news or the bad news?" I'll start with the good news.

The Buzz is back, long live the Buzz! Obviously, since you are seeing this post, TabletPCBuzz.com is back up, and you may now continue on your way posting, interacting, and generally enjoying being a part of the Buzz community.

Now for the bad news. I had to restore the site back to May 12th to get it running! I know, Ouch. That is a lot of lost data, memberships, and great thinking lost, but there just was no other way right now. I won't go into all the details, but a combination of corrupt SQL server data, some failed and just plain missing backups has resulted in this being the best option to get the site back up and running. We know this is painful for many of you, but please understand that the Buzz is a collection of well over 3 years of great interaction, data, and community, and will indeed recover based on the strength of its members! No looking back!

I have been in contact with Spencer the last week or so, and believe me, he is most mournful (and very stressed) of this entire situation, and sends along his apologies for the downtime. In my brief discussions with him, he has been in Austria, Croatia, Belgium, and many points in between. He has had a most hectic schedule with lots of travel and activities, so just has not been able to get to the site, and when he has, connectivity has been poor. Thus my involvement here.

Once again, apologies for what has been lost, but here's a toast to what is still to come!

Dennis Rice (for Spencer Goad)

TabletPCBuzz still down
Wed, Oct 4 2006 17:52

Just an update. Heard from Spencer Goad this morning.

" I'm out of the country for school and travelling and don't have access available to look at the server. I'm going to try and find a way to look tonight, but I don't know that I'll have time (we leave tomorrow morning to do mission work in Zagreb, Croatia). "

Dennis over at gottabemobile.com (another Tablet PC MVP) is hoping to take a look at the server soon.

Congratulations Hugo Ortega Microsoft MVP
Mon, Oct 2 2006 16:55

From Hugo's blog:

Hugo Ortega is one very misguided geek. Knowing that Tablet PC take up in Australia has been very unimpressive, to say the least, he has single-mindedly begun preaching to anyone, willing or unwilling to listen, about the merits of Tablet PC.

 Congratulations Hugo!

Any news about The Buzz?

Sorry to all, I just wanted to let you know that I too am concerned about the technical problem at TabletPCBuzz.  I do not have access to the server.  So if you are wondering,  there isn't anything I can think of to do, that might help.
