I installed them locally a few days ago and had a blog up and running in 10 minutes. The install was pretty seamless - no SQL scripts to run. Just pop the source up on the server and browse to the install directory. It does the database setup automagically.

Related to DotNetNuke - just a correction to what Jeremy said earlier... DNN is the evolution of what used to be IBuySpy - no port of PHPNuke at all. It's been .NET frlom day one. The Guild website is DNN - www.gspdevelopers.org. Module development for DNN is very easy to do, install, etc. It isn't perfect, but it's a solid portal sollution that's very extensible. Version 3 is in beta now and supposed to go RC any day now. It's got tons of new features from the 2.x days.

Community Server: Blogs. The "evolution" of .Text to 1.0. It's starting to hit RC status so they'll be releasing it with the sources soon.

I found the link I was missing. www.opensourcecms.com. It has open source cms demos so you can try before you mess with them. This is how I figured I didn't like Wordpress and was part of my search in finding a blog engine.

The only problem the site has is there's no .NET anything. It's probably because you need IIS and ASP.NET for those types of things, and hosting companies that offer those generally aren't as cheap (generally, don't shoot me). I'd love for there to be a .NET version of opensourcecms.com though so we don't have to install all of these to see if it'll be exactly what we need.

It all boils down to what you want to do with the site and how much of a box you're willing to put yourself in. Using Community Server as an example you'd have to ask yourself whether you'd need forums or gallery and if they are a necessity. Community Server is cool in that you can mix and match all of them but aren't locked in. You'd have to have modules in DNN to do similar things but you wouldn't be locked in either because you could simply turn them off if they become a problem. The biggest problem I've realized is conversion. Once you pick a platform it's difficult but not impossible to migrate your data to a different technology. That shouldn't stop you from making your site exactly what you want though, it just may create unnecessary work if you don't find a technology that suits you better up front.

If you need any help with administration let me know. A separate brain may come in handy when you start installing and mucking around with some of this stuff. I'm sure the other guy's could offer some advice too in exchange for pr0n.

If I'm correct, DNN is almost a complete port of PHP/PostNuke. The design of the ancient PHPNuke and even the updated PostNuke fork leave a lot to be desired. They were fun to hook up the bits and get it to look somewhat decent but I found it to be way too constricted for my tastes. I setup a postnuke site on my personal firewall (linux box) at home and I spent more time making it pretty than filling it with content. Add a major security update every couple of months and I'd end up having to mod it all over again. Needless to say I abandoned the idea for a blog hosted elsewhere.

.Text can be a punk to setup but why not wait for CS:Blogs? It's due to be out relatively quickly and it has some modifications that'll make it better than .Text. Has a couple of ways to beat comment spam and may be just what you're looking for. It really depends on if you want something that includes everything (DNN) or are looking for some kind of blogging engine (.Text).

I'm soon to manage a conversion of our company's website to DNN and I'm loathing the day that happens. It probably won't really be that bad but I just have too many painful memories of postnuke to think anything with the word Nuke should be taken seriously. You may be more comfortable with developing something on your own depending on what you'd like to do with it. Then again I don't think in revisions and I always want 1.0 of whatever I do to be perfect. DNN would be a good start with the possible notion that you work with something else sooner or later.

If I were you I'd find a demo site where I could play with a couple of implementations. I used to know one for all of the CMS stuff out there where I got my first taste of PostNuke. It didn't handle .NET implementations but I'm sure there's one out there somewhere. If you find one let me know and if I can remember the one I've used I'll let you know. I had it bookmarked at one time but I've reformatted since then and I was pretty horrible at organizing them.

Good luck with the site. Post some progress reminders so I don't have to bookmark it just yet. I probably should but I'm a little too lazy (not to mention I make bookmarks but don't use them. I guess I figure eventually some day "later" I'll get to it)

Scott- it have a lot of trouble with it too. Brinkster doesn't host MSMVPS - at least not that I know of - my new site is on Brinkster.

However I think Casey just PROVED beyond any shadow of a doubt that CAPTCHA needs to serious work. If you didn't read his article yet- read it quick - it's the best thing I've read in ages.
