Its been going on for as long as I can remember. Sometimes people wouldn't even change ip/domains in example code. Thats how I would spot it. "What the? This guy wrote the same code, and he even used my mail server domain as the example? hah!"

RE: Copying code -- My experience is limited, so I can't judge a lot of things that go in the development world, but in the world of Web Design/Development/Whatever-You-Call-It, it's absolutely obscene how many people tout themselves as a "Web Developer" because they can copy and paste a whole bunch of messy, crappy javascript or what-have-you, make a webpage, and walla, you're a web developer....

This is probably the subject for another blog, but the off-shoot of the code plagirization/copying phenomena are the entire groups of people that go around claiming credentials they clearly do not have.

I have a Linux box (perhaps bad choice of words in this context) right next to my 2k3 box. I'm about to add an iMAC to my nerd command post. Here's how I decide if someone's a good Linux user or a frustrated Linux Nut. Spell either Bill Gates, Microsoft or Steve Ballmer:

Cool Linux users will spell it Bill Gates, Microsoft or Steve Ballmer
The others will spell all three Bill Gate$, Micro$oft or $teve Ballmer.

And thanks for your words of encouragement - you are too kind. Someone did make me forget about them by the way - his name is Big Biztalk Orchestration and his deadline which are standing outside my office right now staring me down ;-). But on it's worst day Biztalk is still pretty cool (2004 at least).

I guess I agree, but it's really annoying considering how flagrant it is (I'm agreeing that it's flattery - not that no one would plagairize your stuff- trust me - they would)

As far as CausticPhil goes - dude, have you seen his wife? I'm amazed he even used his computer. "Hot wife or blogging? hot wife" The algorithm is very simple.

My excuse is that my girlfriend isn't around a lot of the time so it's me and the 2k3 server.

You know, plagiarism is a form of flattery.

There is no chance that anyone is going to plagiarize 'my' code but me. The stuff my alter ego writes is of such a quality that even I don't understand what it means. It just works. It seems that while being in the zone, he (she?) conveniently forgets to add comments, hints, or documentation. I must train my alter ego on this. It is so embarrassing.

BTW It seems causticPhil has return from the realm of the dead (or was it a honeymoon :-). Welcome back. The profession just needs some more a33 whipping, so we (me, myself, and the alter ego) look forward to your next post.

This is something I don't want to even get started on. I've had a few articles ripped off which piss me off more than just ripping off code snippets. Sh1t, how hard is it to add a line of credit? And my favorite is seeing newsgroup posts with your exact fucking quotes from a previous post. Fortunately a-holes that do this do it to everyone so they usually make more than a few enemies. I had a friend that had the whole damn article ripped off- the whole ThING, I mean every bit of it except the dude changed one variable from 'x' to i. He even left x in the comment section the lazy bastard. I can't wait to see your post.
