New Speech Forum on GotSpeech
Showing that they really leave no stone unturned in their pursuit to be the web's premier Speech Server site, Marshall and Mark created a new Forum dedicated exculsively to Desktop Speech Applications. From a business perspective, Speech Server as part of OCS seems to me the only real platform we have for making commercial speech applications. Vista's speech technology and the System.Speech namespace is awesome, but you target fundamentally different types of applications with them. I know, this is a seemingly stupid statement considering both aspects involve speech enabled applications -but the distinction, at least as far as I can tell is one of scope. Running a speech server to create an app that only they use, is going to be overkill for most people. Dev time is decreased compared to what it used to be, but it still entails a good bit of development and a very large bit of infrastructure concerns. System.Speech on Vista on the other hand, is a great way to speech enable just about any utility you've already written that's sitting on your desktop. No doubt I'm pointing out the painfully obvious here. Ultimately though ,since the barriers to entry got a lot lower with Vista, more and more people are going to be supplementing their apps with speech capabilities - and as such, there will be more and more questions about it. GotSpeech will be there just like it has been with other Speech issues, to make sure developers have everything they need to build solid apps.
I've been away from all forums for a while now. It's been bugging me b/c I was a top poster in a lot of groups for a long time. This looks like as good a reason as any to try to get back into heavy online forum participation.
