Why Avoid Code Behind?

Published Sun, Mar 26 2006 0:17 | William
I spent the good part of this week debugging and redoing a bunch of ASP.NET code that featured the no code behind approach prominently.  It was excrutiating to say the least. I know Boiling Springs' Greatest Unemployed Guru is a big advocate of this approach, but is there really any possible benefit to avoiding Code Behind?  If so, please school me because I sure as hell don't see it.

Avoiding code-behind is lame.

Job security?

I had a similar situation when I started my current job, I know your pain.

A whole internal system (ordering, tracking, management etc...), mostly coded without code-behind files but worst of all, not done in visual studio! No debugging what-so-ever; a nightmare to say the least.

I was thinking of taking the code I was debugging and having a contest. I'd want one small thing changed and the first person to make the change in under two hours wins. Then do the same thing with code behind and make it 5 minutes.

Why do people still code everything inline? Why, why why isn't there a law against it?

Why, why why isn't there a law against it? Why, why, why aren't the MVP's self-policing?

I thought the P in MVP stood for professional, something which you have demonstrated a disdain for in your caustic attacks on Charles Carroll [http://blog.charlescarroll.com/chazblog/] who, by the way, might not be employed in Boiling Springs but is happily employed at MicroStrategy in Tyson's corner [http://blog.charlescarroll.com/chazblog/?p=73].

I won't say I agree with everything Charles does or says or the advice he gives, but what no one who's ever met him could disagree on is that he has an undeniable, infectious energy about him that gets people excited and interested.

Charles is very good at creating community. MVP's are supposed to help foster community as well, or so I've been led to believe. Reading another "I hate Charles" post is as grating as listening to some 12 year old script kidding saying 'M$ sucks!'.

I'm aware this is an unpopular stance with those in the "I hate Charles" fan club, but come on, use RANT warnings and make people click through to read the useless nonsense these posts are. Yes, I'm probably perpetuating the life of this thread by my comment, hanging out some low hanging fruit for you to chew off, but if no one inside the MVP community is going to pull your card and remind you what Professionalism is, then I'll do it.

Do all of his defenders use the same formula or something? Weeks after I post something, weeks after it's closed, someone comes in and makes the identical comments criticizing me for it. I'll run my blog however I damn well please and Charles and his flunkies can go running AGAIN to try to get my stuff edited.

As far as no one in the MVP Community comment. Get your facts straight dude. NO ONE IN ANY COMMUNITY OTHER THAN PEOPLE CHARLES HAS POSTED AS HIS FRIENDS has ever pulled my card on it. That speaks volumes. If it's such a terrible rant, why then are you the only one to say something? No one, and i mean NO ONE, outside of people who Charles names on his site has ever said anything other than total support for it. As a matter of fact, there's quite a few people who seem to think I'm no where near hard enough.

So what specifically is wrong with my post Jeffrey, that I took a honest swipe at your boy? Seriously dude, go lecture YOUR Boy about sending threatening (and utterly stupid) emails to people [Gasp, I still haven't been sued by his big city lawyers] and putting up stuff on his site about me. You don't read my blog, neither do any of his other cult members, i mean friends so I don't even understand how this is an issue.

P.S. I'll be up that way next month and would love to address this issue with Charles AND ANYONE else that wants to address it with me. Run along now little boy, I'm sure Charles has some more work for you to do

I'm going to be taking bets on how long it takes him to get the ax and how many women he harasses. I'm putting the over under at 6 months on the first and 2 on the latter (not sure if there are any women there)

I don't have a blog, but this about enough to make me want to start one just to berate that douchebag. I do not know Charles Carroll nor do I ever want to. But one thing I can say with certainty is that he is a punk a** b*tch. Every time you say something about him, he sends one of his little punks over here to defend him. What's a matter Jeffrey Schoolcraft, why does Charles need to send a "God among Insects" like yourself here instead of addressing it directly? Oh, I remember, he tried once like the little punk he is if I remember correctly - Bill posted it and Charles went running to his two MVP Friends and begged them to do something about it. [And is it me or is it that all of Charles' friends are *male*? hmmmmmmm. Jeffrey sounds like a wife whose husband was just insulted. But that can't be because from what I've read, Charles can't keep a wife right?]

Better watch out Bill, one of Charles' "High Dollar Lawyers" is going to get you. God I could smack you for taking that post down - it showed what a delusional *** that dude is. And Jeeeezus, how long ago was that first post when you dogged dude out for losing his job? It's about time he got another one

Jeffrey - that has to be the most scripted response I think I've ever read. That is the third post I've seen, just on Bill's blog, from a Charles supporter using the "P in MVP" cannard.

How can you say that "I won't say I agree with everything Charles does or says or the advice he gives, but what no one who's ever met him could disagree on is that he has an undeniable, infectious energy about him that gets people excited and interested." with a straight face? You must not have read the responses to Bill's post when he posted Charles' email. More than a few people that met him and know him had pretty negative stuff to say about him. And admittedly, I'm friends with Bill and Kim both so I know for a fact, there are three people here in SC alone that have worked with Charles that think he's not only a total a55hole and bully, but that he's nuts.

Bill, Jeffrey's whole post is so scripted that I really doubt he wrote it alone. It has that self-congratulatory tone of everything Charles writes, and I'd be shocked if he wasn't actively involved in writing it. I do have to chuckle at how Jeffrey handled it though - pretending to read your blog, pretending that this isn't a personal blog (Since he didn't criticize any of your other posts that I can see, I guess he doesn't have any professsional issue with Gay Penguins or Necrophiliac ducks, the Church of Subgenius, girls in convenience stores with big knockers and suggestive phrases on their shirts or 90% of the stuff you typically write about), whipping out the P in mvp cannard and the rest.
