Free Speech is cool

Published 3 February 6 8:1 PM | William

Well, I know I'll probably end up causing all kinds of trouble over this, but the more I read the more I'm getting annoyed.  Many people take advantage of Free Speech and while rioting and threatening to kill people isn't a government violation of it, well, it's still a pretty good attempt at stifling stuff you don't like.   There's a lot to mock back about, that's probably a much wiser (more mature and more sane) way to handle it.  This isn't .

Free Speech Kicks Ass!

It's easy to support free speech when what is being said is fine, or respectable to you, the greatest test of free speech is when you don't agree or are upset by what is being said.

The funny thing is you have a large majority of people who don't believe in any god at all bowing and being intimidated. I suppose that largely is due to the fact that they wouldn't like to be killed because they said something "wrong". Sad truth about the Quran is that it's perfectly "legal" to kill you for saying ANYTHING even remotely against it's teachings, the prophet, or Allah.

Funny thing is, change Muhammad to Jesus and it's just another day at the office. No need to get fired and/or killed over it. That again is probably because there aren't going to be many nuns wanting to blow themselves up over it. I think the firings boil down to the bosses not wanting to die themselves but it could be that they just want this to go away quickly.

Personally? I welcome it. If I can't be the first to laugh at myself, I'm going to have a really dull time on this planet. Many people use humor as an ice breaker and quite honestly this should be flattering. People are noticing and while they aren't really painting a picture of excellence, it will get people talking in a sort of "I make fun of you because I really like you" 3rd grade response.

You know what pisses me off about this whole thing is that the "free speech controversy" is a sham. Really. If the rioting 'round the Mediterranean were about free speech and the cartoons you would sort of assume that the riots came about when the things were published, right?

Wrong. According to an Emmett Tyrrell OpEd the things were PUBLISHED IN SEPTEMBER. WTF? Basically, a Muslim cleric has been whippping up animous for several months until he'd built anger to a critical mass. Somehow I think that the subsequent rioting was a well-orchestrated attack on all things Western that run afoul of Muslim sensibilities. How else do you explain the anti-US and anti-Semitic rhetoric that is coming out from the angry Muslims when the cartoonist was a Dane?

As for real free speech, I like the position that Paul Greenberg advocates in his column today.

And if you would like a good test for "tolerance", check out my personal favorite from Mike Adams:
