Smart Cards and Mobile Embedded Developer's Conference

Smart Cards are one of those things that I know I want to use, just can't seem to find many places to use them.  The most notable exception is w/ Microsoft's Code Center Premium Edition which uses a Smart Card.  I know that about a year ago when I got a new Dell at InfoPro - the keyboard it came w/ had a Smart Card Reader built into it. Anyway, I just got my preliminary material from Mobile Embdded Developer's Conference and inside it came the following:

I hooked it into my Smart Card reader but that resulted in zilch.  Obviously there's something they are doing with it, I just wonder what?  I really doubt the hotel is dishing these things out for all hotel attendees b/c I think smart cards run like $20.00 at a minimum (not that it cost that much to make them, but there's overhead associated with creating them, buying the stuff to load data onto them etc) but who knows. I'm looking forward to finding out though...
