iPhone Unlocked
I see that PureMobile.com have posted a video of an unlocked iPhone.

I wonder how long it will be now before we see these things here in Ireland and the UK.   For now, I have to make do with my HTC Touch.

GFI Webmonitor 4 released - not without problems

Recently GFI released GFI Webmonitor 4.   We have upgraded a few sites without issue – but then we hit a problem.

On one particular site had installed GFI MailArchiver 4 as well as GFI Webmonitor 4.   On this site, whilst the Webmonitor application appeared to function, the GUI administrator interface gave various errors relating to .NET not finding the application.

After a few days working with the team at GFI they reported the problem to be that the two applications shared the same IIS Port, 8017.   How this got past testing amazes me, but there is a fix….   here it is:

  1. Stop the GFI MailArchiver Core Service
  2. Stop the GFI MailArchiver Core2 Service
  3. Stop the GFI WebMonitor Service
  4. Follow the procedure in this file.
  5. Start the GFI Webmonitor Service
  6. Start the GFI MailArchiver Core2 Service
  7. Start the GFI MailArchiver Core Service

How to check your IP, with a difference!

For ages I have used whatismyip.com and dnsstuff.com to check the IP I am presenting to the world.

I was getting bored of this, but now thanks to www.moanmyip.com I can hear the IP read out by a sexy girl.

Horrah!

GFI release another update for MailEssentials 12

Just a quick update to let you know that GFI have released an update to MailEssentials (again) to better combat PDF and other attachment spam.   The update is available here.

It is worth reading the technote they have published on how to tweak the new attachment spam filter.

It's easy when you know how... Creating and ISO image from a CD or DVD on and iMac running OSX

As the title says, it is easy when you know how, but damn difficult when you don't.

It's things like this that annoy me about operating systems.  If you want to backup a CD or DVD to an ISO image file, in my own opinion, you should be able to just CTRL+Click on the mounted CD and then select "create ISO".  (I am sure you can probably script it, but this should be a standard feature for a user).

Anyway...   here is how to do it in OSX...

  1. Put your CD or DVD in the drive.
  2. Open the built in "Disk Utility" application.
  3. Highlight the CD or DVD in Disk Utility and select "New Image" from the top bar.
  4. On the popup window, type a name for your image and select "DVD/CD Master" from the Image Format dropdown.  Click Save and the image is created.
  5. Rename the .CDR file to .ISO and you are done :)
I sure hope this information is more Googable now!

DigitalPersona release a Small Business Server package
DplogoVertnewFor a few years now NTES have been involved with a partner company ASC Software that provides innovative, cost effective, garage management software.

During the initial design phase for the first version of “FleetMinder”, Garren Bellew and I sat down and discussed some of the supported features of the package*.    One of the key things noted at that time was garage users did not want to have to type in passwords, but we needed the system to have security.    We turned to DigitalPersona and implemented their fingerprint recognition system directly into the FleetMinder package.

For the larger clients, the option of adding the DigitalPersona fingerprint scanners was never questioned, but for the Small Businesses, where budget is a concern, they often chose not to implement the scanners, at least initially.    That is why today I was glad to find out that DigitalPersona have finally released a Small Business Server specific version of the DigitalPersona Suite

There is also a datasheet that can be downloaded here.

*    On a side note…  when we were researching this product, somewhere I read that the DigitalPersona finger scanner would not work on a finger that was cut off from the hand.    I would LOVE to meet the dedicated beta tester for that feature

Community Graphic Artist needed!

Hello all!  Arno and I need a favour!

We are looking for a graphic artist that would be able assist us with generating a cool looking single opening page for www.fsdeveloper.com which is being relaunched soon!

We would do it ourselves, but it would end up looking like a play-school drawing and frankly…   we prefer to stick to the development stuff.

You will not get paid, but will have the kudos of knowing that thousands of people will be looking at your cool design (if you can do it discreetly, you can have a link from the main page as well).

As an extra bargain, for female graphic artists only, you can also have me totally to yourself for 1 whole hour.  This deal is just crazy!

Seriously, if you are interested, please post here…   or email me

I love user comments sometimes....

Thank you to the user that posted on the FSX Review blogpost I made a while back and gave me a giggle:

"I think that FSX is great but just sometimes the whole thing looks a bit animated"

That is because it is animated :)

Microsoft Hotfixes online
Thanks to Tony for the heads up here.

It seems that you can now finally request hotfixes online from Microsoft without having to go through the pain of a phone call where you would normally have to give your entire life story

I have missed a whole lotta stuff....

For the last 4 months I have been disconnected from the web and life in general while I moved the office and the home…

In fact I am still not fully connected to the web as I have no fixed IP address and am behind a proxy that the wireless provider has been promising to open for over a month now.   The problem is that here in Ireland you have no choice but to go with the local wireless broadband provider so you are over the barrel so to speak.   Anyway, that situation is a whole other story.

I do feel like a bit of a let-down to the community in regards to both Small Business Server and Flight Simulator as I really have not had time to do too much.   I guess sometimes real life does have to get in the way.   Over the coming few months I aim to get back into the swing of things and get back to keeping you updated like before.    Anyway, I am going on a bit…   so here is a list of things that I missed…   and you may have too!

Owen reports on Oshkosh (Oh how I wish I could have afforded the trip)

The FSX: Acceleration Trailer was released in HD

Adrian put up some more posts on Performance Art which are well worth a read.

Hal Bryan seems to be on some drug that allows him to type a thousand words a minute and he is filling up the Windows Live Spaces server with various interesting ramblings that you should read.

Arno has been working on a ton of stuff, and both of us will soon be working on something cool with fsdeveloper.com <<<  that is when I get a few hours!

There is more, but I have just been called away to sort yet more house problems….    more soon, I promise….
