What no 2000 Service Pack 5? Have Microsoft lost the plot?

This is the first chance I have had to post to the Blog in a week, but I read this article in that time, and I am not a happy bunny....

I cannot believe that Microsoft are not releasing SP5, but are releasing a security "Roll Up" instead, this seems like a totally ludicrous decision.

So Microsoft...   I am begging you to go grab the SP4 CD and implement this "Roll up" into SP4, then call it SP5 :)

Seems like a simple thing to me ;)  But then again, I don't have massive resource to figure this kind of thing out.

Here is the link to the official MS notification

Axis Security Cameras on a SBS2003 Network

My company, NTES Limited, is in the process of becoming an Axis Reseller in Ireland.   Today, we finished out first implementation of the Axis 211 Power over LAN camera.

All I can say is WOW!  We have these cameras all working using MPEG4 compression directly into the Small Business Server Companyweb.   The client now has a totally simple way to access and control the cameras.

The next task is to take the old SBS box, format it, and turn it into a Video server.  With this facility motion sensed recordings can be taken and emailed to a person in the company.

Oh how I love gadgets :)

PSS Installer - Spyware?

As someone who is on the beta team for PSS, and has seen and worked on the installer code, I can state for a fact that the installer does NOT contain spyware.

The download is unique to each system, but does not in any way check the internet on every load of the PSS Concorde (or for that matter any of the PSS Products).

I feel this is a necessary post, as there have been some rumours that are simply untrue flying around various forums.

An official post from PSS can be read here

Falling Contrails - A fix

Last night, I was goofing off the IFSD Scenery and taking a flight in the PSS Concorde.  I noticed the following problem:

It took me a while to find the solution on the web, so I am posting it here, with the fix.   Basically, some other add-on that I have installed in the past month (still to find out which one) played around with one or two of the effects files.

To fix, download this zip file and replace the incorrect FX Files.  Backup the originals, just in case! (Thanks to Neil Davey for the replacement files)

Uncle Nick

Fantastic news...  that I thought I would share with the world.

As of 6pm this evening, my lovely sister in law gave Rachel and me a new Niece.  I am to understand that the name shall be "Emma Barry".

I have to start to save up.   The current Nieces and Nephews already cost a bomb...   but somehow they are worth it :)

ISA Patch - fixed....

A couple of days ago I posted about a problem with the latest ISA Patch, well...  No point in posting duplicate information...   Susan Bradley says it all here:

How to make rotation to wind work "live" in Flight Simulator.

This is a common problem that scenery designers have with Flight Simulator.  If you edit the source code, or use Arno Gerretsen's MDLTweaker tool to set the rotate to wind variable (0c74), the rotation does no occur until you exit and reload Flight Simulator.

This is due to a bug in the scenery engine that requires two wind rotating objects be in the viewport in the game.  To resolve this issue, the best method, and one that has never failed for me is the following: Thanks to Dick (Rhumbaflappy) for this.

When you place your object(s) using XML, make sure to also place a hidden rotating object.   The example below is what I used for some animated flags for the IFSD (soon to be released) Shannon Scenery.

<!-- Placement of a offset hidden flag to allow "live" rotation -->
<SceneryObject lat="52.6896397767312" lon="-8.91565112619747" alt="0.0M" pitch="0.0" bank="0.0" heading="90" altitudeIsAgl="TRUE" imageComplexity="NORMAL">
<BiasXYZ biasX="1" biasY="-1" biasZ="1" />
<LibraryObject name="A9615385715C9F691BF6A01DDF2B2EB6" scale="0.001"/>
</SceneryObject>

<!-- Placement of flags -->
<!-- Irish Flag -->

<SceneryObject lat="52.6896397767312" lon="-8.91565112619747" alt="0.0M" pitch="0.0" bank="0.0" heading="90" altitudeIsAgl="TRUE" imageComplexity="NORMAL">
<LibraryObject name="A9615385715C9F691BF6A01DDF2B2EB6" scale="1.0"/>
</SceneryObject>

<ModelData name="A9615385715C9F691BF6A01DDF2B2EB6" sourceFile="irishflageast_tweaked.mdl"/>

As you can see, the top object has a scale set to a stupidly low amount, so this object will never be seen by the simmer.  However, now that flag will rotate "live" within the game as the wind direction changes.

Latest ISA Patch reported to "kill" Web Proxy Service

There have been reports that the latest ISA Patch is shutting down the Web Proxy Service.   I can confirm that I have today had my first site with this problem.

Recommendation:

  1. Remove the Patch
  2. Apply the workaround detailed here or use the script from ISATools.org
  3. Wait for the re-release of the patch

ISA Patch for SBS2003 with ISA Installed

Well...  I was half way through writing this when I realised my friend Susan Bradley had got it done already :)

Low on virtual memory? Apparently so was Orlando Airport

What I found most funny about this, was that people where looking up at the board and not one of them realised that the times were wrong.   Anyway...   I had to snap this. (Click on the image for the larger version)

Oh, I feel his pain...   This issue has bugged me for ages, but his wording describes it so much better than I ever could.

Whats that smell?

Between all my recent travel problems (for which I have dedicated a new categories on the blog) I forgot to tell a funny story about the trip to Winconnections!

On arriving in the hotel in Orlando, we proceeded to unpack the bags.   "Whats that Smell Rachel?" I said to my lovely wife.   It was coming from one of the bags....   I thought "O God, something spilled".

So, we unpack the bag, and leave the clothes to air.   Nothing seems wrong with the bag, but we put it on the balcony anyway as by now I am ready to pass out, and the nice lady that delivered up some food was looking very faint as she left the room.

The next day, we bring the bag back in, but the smell remains.   I leave the room to take a shower.   Just after I apply the shampoo to my hair, I hear a scream from the room...  I jump out of the shower (in true naked mvp style) and run into the living room with shampoo stinging my eyes...   Rachel looks at me and explains to me, with a few expletives, she has found the cause of the smell.

After opening the lining of the bag, my wife found the very defrosted, squashed mouse, that had travelled with us from Ireland.   The stench was unbelievable!   So, we call down to the front desk to ask for some disinfectant.

Being the Hyatt, they send not one... but two engineers to our room, complete with masks and plastic baggies to remove the offending mouse.

It was the perfect start to the holiday :)   I thought it would be a nice story for this new category...

Catch you later....
