  • WLAN–LAN switch not supported under Windows 8

Maybe you remember setting the WLAN / LAN switch on your notebook BIOS, disables your WLAN adapter when you plug in an Ethernet cable to your NIC and enables the WLAN when it is unplugged. This feature, even if it is correctly configured in the BIOS of your notebook, it will not work on Windows 8. Sadly...

  • New tool to play with: SemanticMerge

A little while ago I was contacted about a new merge tool from the company behind PlasticSCM . (I haven't used Plastic myself, but I'd heard of it.) My initial reaction was that I wasn't interested in anything which required me to learn yet another source control system, but SemanticMerge...

  • The Open-Closed Principle, in review

Background I've been to a few talks on SOLID before. Most of the principles seem pretty reasonable to me – but I've never "got" the open-closed principle (OCP from here on). At CodeMash this year, I mentioned this to the wonderful Cori Drew , who said that she'd been at a user group...

  • Netbook powered..

This is my first Netbook powered blog post ever. The core of this system is presently a Toshiba Mini, my production PC internals being scattered around two desks. For now, they are homeless as my original Coolermaster CM 690 II case makes its way back to its maker. The UPS tracker tells me that the case...

  • Browser wars..

Microsoft is in trouble again for not promoting other browsers over its own in EU versions of Windows 7 SP1. As you can plainly see from the graph, Internet Explorer is streets ahead of all of the competition and rising. Well, it would be if the green line was Microsoft’s in house browser. It looks to...

  • Stuff not working?

Apps.. . It could be that your preferred anti-virus solution is the culprit. Posters in the MS Community forums are reporting that some anti-virus solutions are having adverse effects. It could well be my problem too, but if I never saw another app on this PC, it would be too soon. Apparently, turning...

  • Windows 8 file options - Copy and Move..

Now, I know that it is possible to drag and drop files across open folders, but it can be awkward and messy, especially on smaller screens like the type found on laptops and Netbooks. So, early versions of Windows had functions within the right click menu which were really useful. Two notable features...

Tablets seem to be all the rage at the moment. I’ve been working with three different types over the last month or so and thought I’d share my observations. • Ménage à trois .. Which side are you on?

Linux and Mac supporters can stand down. It’s not that you don’t count, even if you actually don’t, so don’t take offence. Windows is now pitching against Windows. In one corner is Windows XP, stable and fast but not slick and not secure either. It is still a hot favourite with...
