# re: Deploying Application-specific configuration using Group Policy

Hello, Nirmal

Thanks for the tutorial on this, I am finding it very usefull... I did have one question tho.. How can I figure out what DLL File corresponds with a certain application.  For example, I need to change the power setting for monitors to numerous users because their monitors shut off after 15 minutes by the default power settings.  I would like to know which DLL file associates or changes when a power setting is changed.  If it is another type of file that does this, please let me know if you can.

Thanks!

# re: Deploying Application-specific configuration using Group Policy

Hi Arun,

DLLs contain functions and sub-functions. They are sub-routines of procedures. They don't change at all.

For any change in Windows reflect the change in the following repository:

Registry

INI

or other config files.

In your case, changes will be saved in Registry.

You need to find out the changes made by Power Options applet using WInINStLE and then deploy using Group Policy or a script using PSEXEC.

# re: Trust Relationship between Domain and Member

Hi Nirmal ,

I have browsed the web site for solution for several days, and only your explanation makes sense ; as per web page http://msmvps.com/blogs/systmprog/archive/2006/11/01/Trust-Relationship-between-Domain-and-Member.aspx

The problem is every time I restored the Ghost image, I got this "Trust relationship failed" error. I don't have Domain administrator rights to re-join the workstation to the Domain (this fix the problem every time) ; and it is annoying to bother the domain adminstrator to re-join the workstation to the Domain. I only have local administrator & domain user rights.

Is there a way to fix this problem after restoring Ghost image ; or another solution better than using Ghost in restoring workstation image to Domain ?

Thank you and looking forward for your expertee 's advice ,

Cheers,

Orlando

# re: Trust Relationship between Domain and Member

Hi,

You may have the following issues with your restoration/image:

1. Ghost image wasn't build properly. Is this happening with all the clients?

2. You're restoring a image which is 30 days old. Computer account passwords get expired within 30 days. Domain member computers must update password with DC within said days.

Cheers!

You may wnat to review the DNS RFC a bit further. It is legal to do a name lookup over TCP. Rarely happens but it's part of the spec.

# re: Add a user to Local Admin group on All machines.

Hi

I tried your posting but had to use the syntax

psexec.exe @server.txt net localgroup administrators <user/group> /add

as having tried the original syntax, I got a warning "There is no such global user or group: @server.txt".

However my version of the syntax also fails with "Access Denied" for every server listed in server.txt. Do you have any idea, why this would be so?

Many thanks - Colin

# re: Moving FSMO roles, DNS and DHCP from one Domain Controller to another Domain Controller machine.

Do NOT use forwarders in most cases!  Your information is wrong.  By using forwarders, you are not building a DNS cache on your server, and you're just redirecting your clients to an external DNS server, instead of using your AD server.

The only time to use forwarders is if you have a secure DNS server internally, and you own another DNS server in your DMZ.  Then you forward your internal DNS to the DMZ DNS server.

Please correct this erroneous information.

# re: Add a user to Local Admin group on All machines.

Access Denied can be due to a handful of things.  I usually see this when I run this kind of command against a remote machine while using an account that's not already an administrator on that machine.

Or:

You need to be an administrator on the remote machine to add other folks to the local administrator group.

# re: Ping computers with Time Stamp

Hi Nirmal,

I like this script idea.  How would I turn it up a notch though?  I'm looking to add a time stamp on every single reply I get back from the device I am pinging.  How would I do that?  For example:

Pinging 172.25.0.60 with 32 bytes of data:

8:54:52 Reply from 172.25.0.60: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=64

8:54:53 Reply from 172.25.0.60: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=64

8:54:54 Reply from 172.25.0.60: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=64

8:54:55 Reply from 172.25.0.60: bytes=32 time=2ms

Ping statistics for 172.25.0.60:

   Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

   Minimum = 2ms, Maximum = 4ms, Average = 2ms

Is this possible?

Both answers are correct... kinda.

If you want your DNS server to resolve all external domains directly from the root DNS servers (Recommended), do not setup forwarding.

If you want to rely on your ISP to resolve all external domains for you, turn on forwarding. If your ISP has issues or changes it's server IPs, you may/will have issues resolving external domains.

The solution requires that you enable the remote registry on both the computers. If infected computer doesn't have the remote registry enabled then you can enable using the Recovery Console. In Recovery Console, you need to enable the service for the Remote Registry.

# re: Windows Log on and Log off immediately.

I just copyed userinit.exe off of my working computer to my broken computer. In fact the broken system was missing the userinit.exe file altogether.

I first copied the c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe file from a working system with the same OS to a USB jump disk.

I then unplugged the USB jump disk and plugged it into the broken system. I then booted the system with a windows install CD. (you have to have the USB jump disk plugged in while the system is booting - that way windows will load the driver for the USB jump disk.)

I then Select "R" for recovery console

Then it will ask for the drive letter of the system to log into. (In my case it was #1 C:)

For enter nothing for the admin password.

Next type dir "Drive-Letter". Replace "Driver-Letter" with the USB jump-disk letter. What I did was to start at D: and work my way up until the screen spit out the contents of the jump-disk; which was F:

Next do "cd C:\windows\system32"

then copy the file "copy f:\userinit.exe ."

then "exit" to reboot the system.

hope this helps

hrping doesn't work well with windows vista... is there any alternative tools for vista?

D:\hrping-v244>hrping.exe -T 192.168.1.1

This is hrPING v2.44 by cFos Software GmbH -- http://www.cfos.de

Pinging 192.168.1.1

with 32 bytes data (60 bytes IP):

4 Requests timed out.

Statistics for 192.168.1.1:

   Packets: sent=4, rcvd=0, error=0, lost=4 (100% loss) in 0.000000 sec

hrPing has known problems with Windows Vista and later raw sockets.

Maybe a newer version of hrPing has already fixed them?

# re: DNS and Active Directory best practices.

I'm somewhat new to network administration and setup, but learning quickly. DNS for all its significance in the TCP/IP domain structure is still a plug & play process. It works or everything else stops. A lot like a 2 year old grandchild.

So my problem is one of backtracking the various hardware, property settings, and not shut down the system or the household internet  connection the house may need. Pretty much the same situation in a small business or enterprise. So I'm setting up a small computer lab, subscribed to TechNet, downloaded various Servers and OS's and aim to achieve Certifications leading to an MCSA.

The internet helps tremendously in searching out answers when the links are current and the connections do their part. Here is one from your "DNS and Active Directory best practices" page that seems to be defunct.

10 DNS Errors That Will Kill Your Network

www.mstraining.com/.../10_dns_errors_that_will_kill_you.htm

It seemed a likely candidate for a potential answer, unfortunatly it only connects to an ISP default search page.

it would probably be fairly easy to write a perl script to strip out the initials fields that are blank. then LDIFDE wouldn't choke when you try to import your ldif file.

our AD administrator extended our 2008 AD with AIXldifForAIX in order for all our users to be able to login to our AIX machines. I want to write a script to update the users attributes to include the aix ones like uid, groups, aix home dirs, and so forth.

Are there any special steps to remember when creating ldif file for import?

Are there any special things to do to make it happen? I know very little about LDAP and even less about AD.

With the best,

# re: DNS works on Both TCP and UDP why?

in fact dns should used both t. l protocols (TCP &UDP)

where tcp is used for transmission session

which is the update files between primary servers and secondary servers also it happened between levels.

even udp is use for client request and reply for gain time.

# re: DNS works on Both TCP and UDP why?

DNS and some other Services work on both the TCP and UDP Protocols. Two protocols are different from each other. TCP is a connection-oriented protocol whereas UDP is a connection-less protocol. TCP requires the data to be consistent at the destination and UDP does not require the data to be consistent or does not need to establish the connection with the host for data accuracy.

DNS uses TCP for Zone Transfer over Port: 53

It is necessary to maintain a consistent DNS database between DNS Servers. This is achieved by the TCP protocol. This communication happens between DNS Servers only. The Zone Transfer feature of DNS Server will always use TCP protocol. The connection is established between the DNS Server to transfer the zone data and Source and Destination DNS Servers will make sure that data is consistent by using TCP ACK bit.

DNS uses UDP for DNS Queries over Port: 53

A client computer will always send a DNS Query using UDP Protocol over Port 53. If a client computer does not get response from a DNS Server, it must re-transmit the DNS Query using the TCP after 3-5 seconds of interval.

Ok it worked the path in the registry changed on the userinit.exe value but do note I copied the *.exe files from the \windows\servicepack directory to the \windows\system32 directory

If its not a file problem being corrupted its probaby the registy settings its got to be close in that
