Java setup sucks...

It's bad enough that the java setup window includes an in-your-face advertisement for OpenOffice.

It's bad enough that old versions of java are not removed automatically, nor is the user prompted to remove old versions.

It's bad enough that Java bundles the Google Desktop and Toolbar with new installs.

Today I saw a computer where the java setup had been stuck at "copying new files" for over 20 minutes.  The owner was in a panic because THERE IS NO CANCEL BUTTON.

java

His choices were:

  1. Keep waiting
  2. Force a halt to the install using Task Manager - which is a *bad* thing to do.
  3. Turn of the power.

What on earth are Sun thinking?

I decided I could live without Java so removed all versions of it.

My reasons were the same issues you mention.

I haven't missed it. for me it is just a waste of space.

When a new version is released it would be handy if it was easy to find. Often it's tucked away and the last version is still on the main download list.

Can't see a problem for the OO plug, great free alternative to the expensive MS Office.

It doesn't help that in the CanSecWest "PWN2OWN" contest, a Java flaw was the method that someone managed to get into the Vista machine in order to own it. Of course, the irony is that this becomes the headline "Vista hacked", and not "Java hacked". Sometimes I wonder if Sun and Apple produce Java and QuickTime for Windows, with so many exploitable bugs, just to keep the statistics favourable.

I'm not sure if Sun just "don't get" the right way to do things, don't care, or what. I know that Microsoft have had a lot of criticism for their security practices over the years and a fair amount of it was justified and this forced them to rethink and clean up their act. They are not perfect but they are trying.

Are we going to have to see Sun, Apple, etc get their feet held in the fire before they all start to improve as well? What about the collateral damage of a lesson taught that way?

The people behind Java at Sun are smart people indeed, which makes it all the more difficult to understand why they are still playing so dumb.
