Java setup sucks...

It's bad enough that the java setup window includes an in-your-face advertisement for OpenOffice.

It's bad enough that old versions of java are not removed automatically, nor is the user prompted to remove old versions.

It's bad enough that Java bundles the Google Desktop and Toolbar with new installs.

Today I saw a computer where the java setup had been stuck at "copying new files" for over 20 minutes.  The owner was in a panic because THERE IS NO CANCEL BUTTON.

java

His choices were:

  1. Keep waiting
  2. Force a halt to the install using Task Manager - which is a *bad* thing to do.
  3. Turn of the power.

What on earth are Sun thinking?

I decided I could live without Java so removed all versions of it.

My reasons were the same issues you mention.

I haven't missed it. for me it is just a waste of space.

When a new version is released it would be handy if it was easy to find. Often it's tucked away and the last version is still on the main download list.

Can't see a problem for the OO plug, great free alternative to the expensive MS Office.

It doesn't help that in the CanSecWest "PWN2OWN" contest, a Java flaw was the method that someone managed to get into the Vista machine in order to own it. Of course, the irony is that this becomes the headline "Vista hacked", and not "Java hacked". Sometimes I wonder if Sun and Apple produce Java and QuickTime for Windows, with so many exploitable bugs, just to keep the statistics favourable.

I'm not sure if Sun just "don't get" the right way to do things, don't care, or what. I know that Microsoft have had a lot of criticism for their security practices over the years and a fair amount of it was justified and this forced them to rethink and clean up their act. They are not perfect but they are trying.

Are we going to have to see Sun, Apple, etc get their feet held in the fire before they all start to improve as well? What about the collateral damage of a lesson taught that way?

The people behind Java at Sun are smart people indeed, which makes it all the more difficult to understand why they are still playing so dumb.

Isn't there an alternate setup download where you would have all of the setup files needed on your computer so it wouldn't have to be on the internet through the whole "copying files" thing? I have dial up, and it's tying up my phone line for hours! But I need java for this program to work.. grr!

My installation is stuck at the Copying New Files dialog, just like in the capture! The dialog says "Please wait a few minutes." Since when is an hour+ called a few minutes? I used to be a Sun supporter. Don't they test these things before they push them to the whole world? What happened, Sun?

Java have a "solution" for this problem. No I don't think they test anything. More problems than it's worth

lol yeah i googled this error cuz i needed it for newest limewire, and i tried twice to get it going

the retarded thing is, they have a offline installer...its 15mb, in this day and age most of us have cable or dsl, so why not just download the 15mb, its small and doesnt come with the bugs, of installing online apparently, installing from the internet directly, is unfournately a new trend, that i dislike, because stuff like this happens more than they like to admit, and then they just have a offline isntaller...sigh...

anyways, i'll install this offline version and see if it works (crosses fingers)

Dito!!,dito!!,And dito again. I've been stuck on copping files now for most of the afternoon. This is quite upsetting for a computer illiterate. I'm trying to improve my skills with the computer world and interuptions like this makes me wonder if the programers and developers of this software were playing their "A" game ????
