Trend Micro's TrendProtect toolbar breaks GFI MailArchiver Web interface
We use GFI MailArchiver to archive all emails going in and out of the firm in a SQL database. This database is accessed via a Web page.
GFI groups emails as conversation threads. Each conversation can be opened to view all emails in a particular thread.
Here is a screenshot showing several conversations, and one opened thread (unfortunately the example has just one message in the thread, but you can get the idea):
I have also been trying out the TrendProtect toolbar, a toolbar from Trend Micro designed to protect users from malicious Web sites. I have mentioned TrendProtect a couple of times before on my blog:
McAfee Site Advisor versus Trend Micro's TrendProtect..
TrendProtect from Trend Micro - a competitor for McAfee Site Advisor
Unfortunately, I have discovered that when the TrendProtect toolbar is enabled, a user can click to open an email conversation in GFI, but the thread opens and then immediately closes. The problem is resolved by turning off the TrendProtect toolbar and restarting IE.
Web browser: Internet Explorer 7
GFI MailArchiver version: 3.1, build 20060828
.NET Framework version: 1.1.4322.2300, Microsoft Windows NT 5.2.3790.0
Sadly, losing the TrendProtect toolbar is not that big of a deal, if only because the vast majority of sites trigger an "unknown" status, similar to the screenshot below. Hopefully the usefulness of the TrendProtect toolbar will improve as more people start to use it, but for now, it seems to be pretty much as ineffective as cwshredder became. cwshredder was a fantastic tool until it purchased by Trend Micro, and pretty much left to die on the vine, having been left untouched since November 2005.
To be fair, HijackThis (a popular product used to analyse computers and manually remove malware settings and files which has been bought by TrendMicro) is not being neglected in the way that cwshredder was, and is, and their corporate products (I use CSM on my various networks) are great products which are backed up by a responsive team.
