Can any of my gentle readers translate French?

I received this request for assistance today via email:

"J'achete Vista et MSN ne se connecte plus alors qu Internet marche certain sites ne se connecte pas d'autre oui.

Merci de votre reponse.

I can't find any information about odmtf.dll which is unusual in itself, and immediately makes me suspect malware  Sad  If my rudimentary French is correct, only some Web sites are inaccessible for this user, but I am uncertain about the reference to MSN - MSN as an ISP? And do the sites trigger the error?

Well, I don't really translate it. Just use a translate tool. It may not be accurate though.

Did you try the Babelfish translator? It is barely legible. I quote the babelfish results for the French request for help:

"I achete Vista and MSN do not connect qu Internet then any more goes certain sites yes does not connect an other"

Here's the thing - services like Babelfish are *literal* translations. They don't take into consideration the nuances or "unwritten rules" of living languages, as the translation above demonstrates.

It seems that I have to wait to hear from my brother-in-law. He speaks 7 languages, including Latin.

What my best guess is, from something like eleven years of basic French and a four year vacation, is something like this: I bought Vista and MSN doesn't connect, and then the Internet goes certain sites don't connect as well, yes. Thank you for your response. I have Home Premium. ...I'm going to have to say I'm not sure that's entirely correct but it seems MSN isn't used in the context of an ISP here, but perhaps that's just my interpretation. If a few people I knew were online, I'd probably be able to get a better translation for you.

Je parle le français un peu! ;) "J'achete Vista" I buy Vista (most likely "I bought Vista" w/o accents) "et MSN ne se connecte plus" and MSN no longer connects "alors qu Internet marche certain sites ne se connecte pas d'autre oui." A bit tougher w/o punctuation or accents...perhaps "Whereas the Internet works, certain sites do not connect..." and then I'm lost. "connecte" is written like it's referring to a single subject, not "sites," and "d'autre oui" makes no sense to my American francophone brain. If someone's a native/web-savvy speaker, they can probably improve on it a lot. As for the dll...Vundo, perhaps?

It's not very good french (e.g. shortened online) :), but essentially he's saying: "I bought vista and MSN won't connect anymore. Also, certain sites work and other don't. Thanks for your response I have Home Premium" His reference to MSN is mostly like MSN messenger, it's more popular than AOL/Yahoo in France. -Mike
