Do you use CompuServe? Word is, you can't use Windows Vista if you want to use CompuServe software.

Source: http://billpstudios.blogspot.com/2007/01/upgrade-to-vista-lose-compuserve.html

What I want to know is, *why* won't CompuServe work with Vista?

Does anybody have instructions on how to connect to CompuServe without using CompuServe software?  I'd much prefer that a workaround be found, rather than users not install Vista if that is what they want to do - the security improvements are worth the effort.

And in other news, CompuServe still exists?

I have Windows Vista and I tried to go to the compuserve website just to see if they are working on a vista capable version of CS, and Vista will not even let you connect to there main site.....very disturbing

You can connect to CS main site if you go through Firefox, but I still haven't found out how to connect to compuserve with Vista. Any advice would be appreciated.

I bought a new computer with Vista on it last month.  I could not use my CompuServe 7.0 software.  I called CompuServe and they walked me through the set up.  I now have access to CompuServe, but everything loads terribly slow....even slower than before, if you've got CompuServe and can imagine that.  The only reason I stay with CS is they offered to lower my monthly charge to $9.95 unlimited use.  But I don't think it's worth it.  My new 'puter came with AOL and I'm seriously thinking of switching.  Hope this helps.  The CS number I called is 1-866-541-8233.  You will get a special technician who specializes in Windows Vista.

Is anyone here from the Columbus, Ohio, area? I am working on a magazine article for Columbus Monthly about whether this is the death knell for CompuServe. (I am also a CompuServe subscriber, which is how I found out about this.)

I am looking for a local person to quote.

Thanks.

I spoke with CS and the technician said that they were not going to develop a fix for Vista as they believe that the CS script program is very simple and should run on Vista, i.e. that MS should solve the problem and not them.  I have used CS for 14 years with the same E-mail address and I have always avoided switching.  Now I think that I may have to bite the bullet, open a different account and stop paying the ridiculous amount that I was paying - $25 per month - for a dial up service!  It is interesting to hear that they would offer $9.95 for unlimited dial up.  I called a few days ago and got a $9.95 package for my account but no dial up.

John, your e-mail address should not be a problem.  I canceled my Compuserve account about 3 years ago and can still use the email service on their website.

I just bought a Vista computer, called the CS 800 number and we are up and running, but slowly!

High speed is not offered in the "boonies" where we live so we will just have to bear with it for now. The tech at the 800 number was really nice and easily walked us thur the installation of CS on Vista.

I installed CS on Vista. it works fine. You cannot see the news / home page but the e-mail works just fine. If you call cs they (tech) will help you install it. It might freeze up once in a while but it is certainly worth if you have been a long time cs customer. Their 'dialer' is useless. it works like a pda -- you can answer e-mails - but access to your address book is like brain surgery - 6 or 7 steps for 1 address.

@SF,

You do realise that you are commenting on a blog entry written nmore than a year ago, yes?  Does it not concern you at all that they *still* haven't fixed all their problems, even after such a long period of time?

My new Dell came with V ista  Home edition.  I'm on-line w/wifi through a broadband router.  I Google the cs.com  website and log on withn screen name and password.  My accouht pops up and wurks oknexcept the on-line     cs program will not support attaching jpeg photo files.  My complete address book showed up.My way around the Vista operating system not nsupporting compuserve software was solved byn not installing cs 2000 and simply Google to Compuserves web site and log on  your screen name comes up automatic after you starttyping  the LOG-IN  form can remember your password .  You can't work off-line cs is completely web based when you log on this way

Just use the new webservice.  It works fine with Vista.

Perhaps they will fix the problem in the future.

HiFolks, I just got my new Acer with Vista on Aug.15, 08. I brought it back to Staples in NYC  telling the  tech guy that i can't install my 5 year old 7.0  disk. He said CS should  mail me an updated disk. As i see here we're all stuck with 7.  As i read the bad news here,  some  folks are sucessful with Vista but only have some of  the adavages of what we use to get with XP or eariler.  Have any one ever removed Vista & put in maybe XP? Wouldn't it be simplier?  We would miss out on the added protection that Visti offfers. Thanks George

After buying my husband a new travel laptop last Christmas, we found that you couldn't run CS whichis all he knows and all his business emails on publications, etc. are on CS.  He also needs to editing with CS, so he was able to special order a Dell with XP, but I'm not sure if you can still do that.

You can use compuserve with windows Vista.  You will have to run an older version (compuserve 7)as an administrator.  I have been using Compuserve with windows vista for two years with no problem.  If you need assistance please contact the compuserve technical assistance.  The staff will assist you in running the program.  Good luck
