Can we, and more importantly should we, make IE7 look like IE6?

Just because you can do something does not mean that you should.  The following is a BAD IDEA!

http://marulogger.blogspot.com/2006/11/make-ie-7-look-like-ie-6.html and http://www.byteburn.com/2006/10/30/how-to-make-ie7-look-exactly-like-ie6 are reporting a way to "make IE7 look like IE6".

I decided to test this out,.  First I created a shortcut as per the instructions.

Sure, it made IE7 look like IE6, but in my tests every time a hyperlink opened a page in a new window, the hybrid IE (and that is exactly what it is, a hybrid) crashed, or froze, and the "critical stop" sound event was heard.  The new window was extremely slow to load, and kept stealing focus over other applications.  IE had to be shut down using Task Manager several times during testing.

Even after shutting down IE using Task Manager, my system froze every time I tried to open a new tab or window, even when starting IE7 the normal way, until I rebooted the system.

In addition, by starting IE7 using the shortcut described you will lose access to IE7's RSS ability, Manage Add-Ons will disappear, you will not have a Phishing Filter, and the Internet Options interface is the old fashioned IE6 version.

I tested by opening IE7 using the shortcut described, going to the link below and then clicking on the "Fiddlertool" hyperlink that will open the Fiddlertool site in a new window.

In short, please don't mess around with kludges like this.  Things breaks and don't work properly and you lose very basic abilities.  The directory in question is there just in case you want to uninstall IE7 and go back to IE6.

I agree with not using kludges, but if Microsoft hadn't rode so roughshod over the wishes of people who like their applications to follow the guidelines Microsoft themselves have laid down then perhaps people wouldn't feel so tempted.

I know some people will prefer the new look. Thing is, while this kludge is no solution, it does show that it wouldn't really have been all that hard to give us all a choice.

I agree the interface sucks.... Why can't it just look like IE6?   Would that have been so freakin hard.  I get ten billion complaints a day because people can't find the damn home icon anymore.....   I like new features just as much as the next guy but there has to be a "classical" setting.... I thought we learned that when going from 2000 to XP.

Sandi says:  "10 billion"?  As for not finding the home icon, what is so hard about seeing that button that looks like a house?

It's all a matter of perspective. Some people find change hard to cope with change - this is where we, as the IT professionals, must guide and educate - that's what we're paid for and what we're supposed to be good at.

Send your users to www.ie-vista.com to learn about IE7 and empower them with the tools to learn and grow.

Ya know... that folder windows/ie7/ is the backup folder containing IE6... so, it's not actually makin IE7 look like IE6, it IS IE6...

Sandi says: Do not mess around with dodgy hacks.  Download the free VPC image, fully activated, with XPSP2 and IE6 that is being supplied, for free, by Microsoft - fully legal but time bombed.

Though IE7's functionality and security may have been an improvement over IE6, I find the interface uncomfortable. I'm keeping it installed so that I may access IE formatted sites that don't work well with alternative browsers.

As for my daily grind, Firefox it still my weapon of choice. I see Microsoft's lack of a classic interface as another of many reasons to stick with Mozilla. I don't need a warm and fuzzy browser that looks pretty. I need to be able to work efficiently. I don't see that from IE7 yet.

I look after the computer for a vision impaired friend. IE7 (thanks auto-update, not) has reset nearly every setting. I spent a lot of time trying to get all the colors and fonts back so it's useable again. Why didn't they think before changing?

IE7 SUCKS! I downloaded, and am currently using Mozilla Firefox, I don't like the interface of IE7, and never will. I have 31 + years computer experience, and when I don't like something, I don't like it! PERIOD!

I also can't stand IE7. There is no reason that Microsoft could not make IE7 look like IE6. IE6 was great! I really got comfortable using it. Now the icons are all in different places with IE7. The look of it is not my cup of tea either.  Oh yeah, don't get me started on Vista, lol......what a joke of an operating system! Xp Pro is awesome.....runs perfectly on every machine I stick it on. You know when you go into a computer store and see computers hooked up to the net for the customers. When i see Vista on them, I turn and leave! I say come out with another new operating system. Call it XP Pro Forever. I just hope the Batman franchise will understand, hehe.

I have to say, I disagree with this whole statement article (sorry). Whereas you may have experienced problems, it may not be directly (or exclusively) related to the shortcut. Additionally, you mentioned only a few specifics that are "problems" ... RSS (who cares), Manage Add-ons (no add-ons, no need!), Phishing Filter (waste of cycles), and the "internet options interface is the old fashioned..." Sorry, but that deserves a BFD.

With hundreds of users to support, I'd rather deal with a few sites crashing than confusing a lot of users. One of them generates phone calls to the help desk (change of interface); one of them doesn't. Being used to Microsoft, crashing applications is by no means shocking or cause for alarm for most of my users.

Where as there may be good reasons to not use the shortcut to c:\windows\ie7\iexplore.exe, this article did not present them.
