How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7

PLEASE GO TO THIS LINK FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION ON HOW TO UNINSTALL IE7:
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

The following information is out of date.

Ok, far too many people are not reading the Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview, or don't know that they exist.  Also, there seems to be a problem with understanding how Add/Remove Programs behaves.

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview was classed as a Windows Software Update.  Therefore, it did not appear unless "Show Updates" is enabled.  As at 5335.5 the uninstall entry has moved, and it is not necessary to enable "show updates":

If IE7 Beta 2 does not appear in Add/Remove Programs, you will need to run the following command:

%windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe (according to the Release Notes)
or
%windir%\$NtUninstallie7b2pmx$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

%windir% is variable and the uninstall folder will change depending on your version of IE7 - replace %windir% with the path to your default Windows folder (generally c:\windows).  Also, you must go to Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab and ensure that "Show hidden files and folders" is enabled.

Error message: IE7 must be uninstalled from the User Account that installed it - Go to the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer.

Right click on Internet Explorer and select New String Value.  Name that value InstalledByUser.  The value of the new String should be your User account name.

Some software (for example ccleaner) deletes uninstaller directories such as $NtUninstallie7bet2pmx$.  Some people manually delete the folder because they want to save disk space (silly - very silly - if you don't know what a folder is for, and it seems that most people hit by this problem did not understand the implications of deleting the folder, you should not delete it).  If the $NtUninstallie7bet2pmx$ folder is empty, or has been deleted completely, whether by third party software or manually to preserve disk space, you will *not* be able to remove the Beta 2 Preview via Add/Remove Programs or the commandline.  If running System Restore does not resolve the situation for you, then your only choice is to stay with the Preview, or format your PC and install Windows afresh.  You will not be able to install any future builds of IE7 while Beta 2 Preview is installed, nor will you be able to run a Repair Install of XP.

Some are suggesting taking a copy of the missing uninstall folder from another PC to replace the lost data, and even offering a folder for download. I cannot recommend that people take this step.  The results are too unpredictable.  If the target PC has fewer, more, or different security updates and other patches installed, you could be left in a real mess.  Also, you have no idea what else you may be getting in that folder.

In our newsreader (Omea) this shortcut working fine.
If you have XPLite 1.0 (or 1.7 for XPSP2), remove Internet Explorer-> install Internet Explorer back with XPLite (this version will be an originally installed with XPSP2), after this you can install IE7 beta 2 preview.

I cannot support this idea. We have no idea what will have been broken under the surface.

Look at the IE7/IE6 side by side hack. That had detrimental effects that were not immediately obvious:

In short, I've published your comment because, as you said, you've posted in the public groups. But I must strongly recommend that people not try this at home.

Thanks for your post on how to reinstall IE6. It worked like a charm. My problem is that, as a typical man, I jumped straight in to IE7 without reading the instructions> Then it bacame a matter of finding someone who knew the beta to lead me out. Sorry I didn't like the beta and I installed Firefox. Now If i can just figure out how to uninstall that program ;).

I came to this to find out how to uninstall IE 7 and saw comments but no instructions except a note not to use one that was mentioned.

I have run the uninstall and need to make sure IE 7 is all out.  And I want to reinstall IE 6 and all its updates.

Please let me know how I can do all of these things.  IE 7 gave me some problems with some websites and I want to go back.

Thanks

Thanks its working now
if the uninstall directory ($NtUninstallie7bet2pmx$) deleted you can copy it from other computer then run the uninstall command.

Editor: Ashraf, I cannot recommend that this path be taken.  The file versions stored in the $NtUninstall directory may be incorrect for your system - weird problems may appear elsewhere on your computer, and you may simply be deferring an ultimate reformat.  If a need to be able to uninstall a beta is so important that such risks are taken, then the machine should not have been used for a beta in the first place :o(

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!!

I just installed IE & yesterday ... and I "hate" it ... desparately trying to get my old IE 6 back.

I've done a lot of internet research over the last day ... and NOBODY has mentioned your editing of the registry key as follows:

****
Error message: IE7 must be uninstalled from the User Account that installed it - Go to the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer.

Right click on Internet Explorer and select New String Value.  Name that value InstalledByUser.  The value of the new String should be your User account name.

****

Changed / edited the registry key for Internet Explorer ... the uninstall worked and I got my old IE 6 back!

Once again ... thanks!

More people should know about your registry suggestion.

Cheers,

Greg H.

I had installed IE7, and hated it.  I simply went to Add/Remove Programs, uninstalled IE7, rebooted my computer and my IE6 was back and working fine.

I'm on a Windows XP V.5.1

The program came on from Yahoo, and sounded like it was an "update" of the current Internet Explorer. I am really angry that this program is not superior to Internet Explorer I was using.

When I want to print anything, neither the print icon they have on their tool bar, nor my printer gives me the size letter I had before. Everything is so small, I could just scream!

I don't think I will trust them. I haven't gotten any answer to my question about another problem, either.

Makes the confidence level of     very low.

Nov. 15th, 2006. And I now have some device trying to access my computer, harrassing me, and I am wondering if it has anything to do with Explorer 7.
