My Toshiba e800 - May you RIP

My Toshiba e800 Pocket PC died again, and this time I let it go peacefully. I spent one day in mourning, and one day researching its replacement - I bought and have been using an HP iPaq rx3715 for about a week now and I love it. It's actually called a “Mobile Media Companion” - it even came with ear buds. And when did they start putting cameras in Pocket PCs?

I called Toshiba Technical Support on Monday to report the failure of my replacement e805. The guys I talked to in April, May and June (Mike, Mark, and Peter, the supervisor) don’t appear to be working there anymore.

On Monday a guy named Noman answered my call. I explained to him that the only way to get the unit to respond was to put my fingernail under the piece at the top that says Pocket PC and lift it up. He had me do a soft reset and then a hard reset, to make sure it wasn’t my data that was causing the problem. I left it that way for 24 hours and then turned it on the next day and found it still had the same problem.

On Tuesday, Femi answered the phone. I explained to him that the unit was still unresponsive. He said OK, and then explained that Toshiba’s return/replacement policy has also changed. For one thing, I don’t have to send it back three times to get it repaired before they will replace it. Their replacement policy has changed as well. Instead of shipping me an empty box to send mine back in and then wait for a replacement, they now do advanced replacement. This means that they will send me a new one, and I will return the broken one in the same box. To participate in this however, I have to give them a credit card, against which they will charge the full replacement price if they don’t receive the broken unit back within 10 days. To me, this seems to be a better deal, much better than dealing with all the shipping I did the last time.

The replacement unit arrived Thursday and is working well. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

My replacement Toshiba e805 is failing

The replacement e805 that Toshiba sent me in June seems to be failing. I'm hoping it's just the faulty touch screen digitizer problem I've read about on other sites.

Toshiba has released the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Update for e800/e805

On July 23, 2004, Toshiba posted the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Update for the e800/e805. Has anyone tried it? How did it go?

Toshiba is replacing my PocketPC

They agreed that 3 times was enough - they are sending a box via UPS to collect the broken one and everything that came with it (except the CD) - as soon as they get it back, they will send me a new one.

Another e805 update

I got my e805 back yesterday, charged it up, restored from my SD card backup, and synced it up with Outlook.

I called Toshiba to find out what they'd done this time - they said "we reprogrammed the unit with new software - the OS". Not Windows Mobile 2003 SE - he said it wasn't available to them (huh?). He said it was the latest version, with patches, of the original OS that came with the e805 when I bought it. I checked and it says it's 4.20.1081 (Build 13100). Does this jive with what anyone else is running on their e805?

After a few hours, I took it out of the cradle and went to watch TV. A few hours later, I came back and found it turning itself off and turning itself back on, over and over again. This is the same problem it had last time. I called Toshiba and waited on hold for over an hour - I got the automated answerer, but no one ever picked up the phone. I called again this morning and got a “live person” right away. I told him what was happening - he looked through their records and then said I should call back this afternoon and ask for a supervisor who can/will authorize a replacement.

My e805 is back at Toshiba - again

I put it in my purse and I guess the Record button got bumped and it recorded for about an hour and locked up. Under battery power, I couldn't turn it off - every time I turned it off, it turned it self back on again. I tried two hard resets (at Toshiba's recommendation) one for 10 minutes and the other for two hours - it didn't fix it. I sent it back Tuesday morning.

My PocketPC is home again ...

My Toshiba e805 arrived home yesterday, after its second trip to Toshiba for repair.I'm not sure what they did the first time, but it didn't fix the problem. This time I called and found out they replaced the motherboard. Hopefully this time it's fixed for good.

A few weeks ago, I reported the passing of my Toshiba e805 PocketPC. I returned it Toshiba for repair and got it back on Friday. I set it up and reinstalled ActiveSync on Saturday, and by Saturday night at 10 pm, I had had to 'soft reset' it 6 times - it kept locking up while it was sitting in the cradle. Sunday morning, I put it in the cradle, it turned itself on and booted to a white screen, and then told me to tap the screen to set up my PocketPC (I had just done that on Saturday).

This baby is going back to Toshiba as soon as I get them on the phone.

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my beloved Toshiba e805

I knew she wasn't feeling well earlier this week.

Every morning she would wake up when I placed her lovingly in her cradle, but within an hour, she had fallen fast asleep. I could only wake her up with a soft reset, but by yesterday, even that wasn't enough.

This morning she wouldn't wake up at all.

On Monday, I am sending her back to her maker, packed snugly in a FedEx box.Her maker says she should be brought back to life and returned to me within
a week.

I will miss her so much.

So sad.

She was so young.

And it seems that just before she passed on, her memory was wiped clean, so she won't remember me and everything I've taught her - we will have to start all over again.
