You are in luck! My parents have a wonderful house in Carolina Beach for sale and they are having an Open House this weekend. It's only 4 blocks from the beach, but if that's too far for you, it also has a pool.

This birthday, however, puts me within one year of being eligible to retire. It's optional, not mandatory (I'm not that old), but the word "option" is scary. It means it's my choice and there are so many factors affecting that choice.

The biggest factor is my parents - at my age I know I 'm so lucky to still have them both alive and healthy - but they are down in North Carolina and I don't get to spend as much time with them as I'd like. U.S. Airways has been getting a lot of my money over the last few years.

The secondary factors are financial - how much would my pension be if I retire next summer, as opposed to waiting a few more years? And how much would I make on the sale of my condo if I sell next summer? I own a small condo on the lake in a small town, and the condo market here seems to be remaining stable, if not going up price-wise, while the housing market is going soft. My plan is to sell the condo when I retire and move to North Carolina, hopefully buying another condo or maybe a small house.

This is probably going to be the biggest decision I've ever had to make in my life so far.

What would you do?

My trip to Oak Island in May - Not

Two weeks ago today I got a cold. It started with a cough, then a headache, and by Monday my nose was running and the cough was already in my chest. Wednesday I went to the doctor - he said it was not allergies - and gave me a script for a decongestant. I knew then my trip was off - I was supposed to fly to North Carolina the next day. I couldn't seeing flying with my head as congested as it was, and I certainly didn't want to give it to my parents. So I canceled my flight. By the following Monday I had a sinus infection, so it's just as well I didn't go.

It's been two weeks since this started and I'm still not feeling 100%. I'm thinking maybe it's also allergies - everybody says they are really bad this year.

Spending some time in Oak Island - in May and July

This weekend I booked two trips to Oak Island, NC, to spend some time with my parents. I booked a long weekend in May and a week in July. In May the weather will be like summer is here in Connecticut; in July it will just be very hot. Last summer my parents were still renovating their house so I haven't spent any real 'vacation' time there - I plan on spending some time at the beach right across the street.
