Some instructions say you need to burn the file to a CD/DVD before you can install it; others say you need to use a program called ISOBuster; others talk about mounting the .iso image so you can access the contents through a virtual drive letter. For some reason, I have a mental block when it comes to all of this – I needed step-by-step hold-my-hand instructions. Thanks to Christoph Schneegans, Microsoft MVP for Expression Web, I now have them and they worked like a charm!

He recommended a program called 7-Zip.

Download 7-Zip from <http://www.7-zip.org/download.html> and install it. I used the 32-bit Windows version.

Right-click the .iso file and choose "7-Zip > Extract Here".

Run setup.exe.

Easy-peasy and no need to use a DVD.

Thanks, Christoph!

Grab a Free Expression Web Ebook!

UK MVP Tina Clarke has recently published the second version of her Microsoft Expression EBook. Phrases like "pervasive insight" and "beyond relational" are difficult to interpret, and it has been a challenge getting a solid explanation of why developers should actually pay attention to this upcoming release when SQL Server 2005 seems to do the job just fine. In this session we will plumb the depths of what's actually there -- at least as of the just-released CTP 6 -- and check out many of the features that developers will want to become familiar with. We'll talk about table-valued parameters, change tracking, the MERGE statement, the DATE and TIME data types, improved T-SQL syntax and intellisense (finally!), filestreams, spatial data support, and whatever else I can jam in without putting people to sleep.

Adam’s Bio:

Adam Machanic is the SQL Server Practice Lead for Pythian Group, a leading provider of remote, fully and partially outsourced DBA services, for over 100 clients around the world. He has been involved in dozens of SQL Server implementations, for both high-availability OLTP and large-scale data warehouse applications, and has spent quite a bit of time optimizing data access layer performance along the way. Adam has written for numerous web sites and magazines, including SQLblog, Simple Talk, Search SQL Server, SQL Server Professional, CoDe, and VSJ. He has also contributed to several books on SQL Server, including "Expert SQL Server 2005 Development" (Apress, 2007) and "Inside SQL Server 2005: Query Tuning and Optimization" (Microsoft Press, 2007). Adam regularly speaks at user groups, community events, and conferences on a variety of SQL Server and .NET-related topics. He is a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) for SQL Server and a Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP). My MVP Lead, April Spence, is one of the people interviewed for this segment. April and Ben Miller, a former MVP lead, talk about the impact MVPs can have on Microsoft products, and the resources provided by the MVP program to help us do that. Ben says that if he didn't work for Microsoft, he would want to be an MVP, because he loves helping people.

Do you want to learn more about the Microsoft MVP Program?

Listen to The Voice of Support - Show 12: The MVP Program In-Depth (Part 1 of 4) over at Channel 9.
Here's a group shot taken of the FrontPage MVPs at one of our platform sessions with the Expression Web Product Group, along with April Spence, our MVP Lead. I think the FrontPage MVPs are the best - we all get along so well - online and in person.

There are about 3,500 MVPs worldwide and at last count, approximately 60% of them are attending this year. It will be great to see old friends and make new ones and put faces to the names I've seen in the newsgroups. Bill Gates will be the keynote speaker and there's lots of technical and platform sessions on our schedule - and a few social events as well. On Monday night, after the Regional Dinner at the Westin, I'm going to the SupportSpace party at Gameworks. If you're an MVP and think you might want to go, get in touch with me and I'll send you an invitation.

MVP Summit 2005 starts in less than two hours

It's a beautiful day in Seattle, sunny and in the 60's - in about two hours we leave for MVP Summit registration!

I arrived yesterday, via two great flights on American Airlines, met up with Yoshie Kohama, a FrontPage MVP from Japan at the airport, and took the Airporter to the W Seattle. I've got a great room on the 19th floor, with high-speed internet access, and a beautiful view of downtown Seattle. Yoshie and I went for an early dinner last night at Elliot's on the waterfront and then did some walking around. I went shoe shopping again - bought two pairs (Cheryl, are you reading this?).

I haven't seen any other MVPs around, but that's about to change!

More later ...
