If you use FrontPage (or you know someone who uses FrontPage) - we have good news for you if you are considering upgrading your toolset. Expression Web provides a really solid Web authoring tool to create and maintain sites based on standards-compliant code. I have a non-technical friend (a theatre producer) who bought Expression Web on my advice (he was a hardcore FrontPage user), and he found Expression Web very easy to use and intuitive.

The Expression team has a great upgrade offer - if you purchase Expression Web between now and June 30 2008, you can receive a free 80 GB USB drive and a complimentary copy of "Microsoft Expression Web Step by Step"! Visit this site to learn more about the offer.

We have rebuilt the extensibility model for IIS7 to be more modular and customizable. We’ll cover the new extensibility architecture in IIS7. In IIS7, the core IIS web server functionality is implemented using the same platform that you will use to build your extensions to the server. We’ll also show off the new distributed configuration system and how easy it is to deploy applications, including IIS configuration, through simple XCopy deployment. You’ll learn about improved support in IIS7 for common Web programming languages like PHP as well as how to do applications using the best of PHP and ASP.NET.

When
Wednesday, February 20, 2008
2:00P-3:30P EST (11:00A-12:30P PST)
Register at this link:

http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=1032366128&Culture=en-US
Note: Audio will be via the Internet. Your machine will need a speaker.

Public Sector Developer Weblog : WEBCAST: Introducing Internet Information Server 7 for Developers

Coming soon to an IE near you - No more "Click to activate this control"

Great news at the IEBlog:

Back in April 2006, we made a change to how Internet Explorer handled embedded controls used on some webpages. Some sites required users to “click to activate” before they could interact with the control. Microsoft has now licensed the technologies from Eolas, removing the “click to activate” requirement in Internet Explorer. Because of this, we're removing the “click to activate” behavior from Internet Explorer!

It’s important (and cool) to note that this change will require no modifications to existing webpages, and no new actions for developers creating new pages. We are simply reverting to the old behavior. Once Internet Explorer is updated, all pages that currently require “click to activate” will no longer require the control to be activated. They’ll just work.

So you’re probably wondering when we are going to release this update? The first chance will be with an optional preview release, called the Internet Explorer Automatic Component Activation Preview, available in December 2007 via the Microsoft Download Center. Additionally this change will be made part of the next pre-release versions of Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3. After giving people enough time to prepare for this change, we’ll roll this behavior into the IE Cumulative Update in April 2008, and all customers who install the update will get the change.

1. Bring up your remote site in IE 7. Then go to Tools > Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sites > Sites and Add your site to the list. Then Close > Apply > OK. You may need to restart IE 7 for this to take effect.

I've got my eye on the MacBook Pro, but I'm waiting until Leopard with BootCamp comes out. Today, I downloaded Safari for Windows, and sure enough, I found a drop down menu on one of my sites that didn't work. It had no options in the drop down list other than the first one, no "Submit" button and worse than that, all the content underneath it was gone! I eyeballed the JavaScript and couldn't find the problem, so I Googled for Javascript validator and found JSLint. The author, Douglas Crockford, keeps it up-to-date and it's free. All you need to do is copy your page source into a text box on the page and hit the JSLint button. It will validate as much of your script as it can, and it's pretty clear about telling you what the problem is. I was able to fix the page and get it working in Safari in no time. I highly recommend adding both of these tools to your toolbox.

MVP again!

Congratulations! Stephen is a former Microsoft MVP for FrontPage and his macros enabled users to extend FrontPage and customize it to their needs. Stephen had taken his site down and the macros were no longer available. I tracked him down using Google and he very graciously allowed me to republish Thingumajig on my site.

I first published the tweaks for the FrontPage Database Wizard. Today, at the prompting of another FrontPage user, I published the remainder of the tweaks - the Miscellaneous Macros. I haven't used them myself, and really can't provide any support for them, but they are there for anyone to use.

Filed under IIS Topics, FrontPage Topics

As most people that have installed IIS 7 on Windows Vista or Windows codenamed "Longhorn" have realized, there are no options to install the FrontPage Server Extensions, leaving the only possibly way to edit your web site that is hosted on a Vista/Longhorn computer is to edit the web site locally using the file system, or to use FTP to upload your files to a remote Vista/Longhorn computer.

The FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) 2002 are part of the Office XP system of products. The Office XP system, including FPSE 2002, left mainstream support on July 11th, 2005, according to the Office lifecycle policy. At that time, the FrontPage Server Extensions were removed from the Microsoft Download Center. Office policy is to remove software from the Download Center that is no longer supported. This policy allows us to focus our support efforts on the latest technologies. FPSE 2002 continues to be available on Windows Server 2003 in the Add Windows Components section of the Add/Remove Programs control panel.

FPSE 2002 will continue to be supported by security updates through the end of the extended support period, and all existing security content will remain available. For more information on the support lifecycle policy, see the Microsoft Lifecycle web page at the following URL:

http://support.microsoft.com/?pr=lifecycle

Because Microsoft realizes that the FrontPage Server Extensions are essential to many web hosting companies, the Internet Information Services product team is researching the development of an updated version of FPSE 2002 that will work with Microsoft Windows codenamed "Longhorn" and Microsoft Windows Vista.

Attn: Gemstream Hosting – FrontPage is not at "End-of-Life"

Jim Boykin wrote in October that he'd received an email from Gemstream Hosting with the subject line of "FrontPage End-of-Life". In the email they said: "Microsoft has discontinued support and future updates for their Linux/Unix-based FrontPage extensions. Changing to a Windows-based hosting server is not an option, as Microsoft is also discontinuing support for Windows extensions as well."

Can someone let Genstream know that Microsoft is not discontinuing support for the FrontPage Server Extensions on Windows Server 2003? As stated here: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3198 mainstream support [for Windows Server 2003] will end two years after the next version of this product is released. Extended support will end five years after mainstream support ends.

I have been told by my contact at Microsoft that the FrontPage Server Extensions for Windows Server 2003 are under the same support lifecycle as Windows 2003 Server itself.

So it would appear to me (depending on when you believe that Longhorn Server will be released) that we have at 3 to 4 more years of mainstream FPSE support for our sites running on Windows Server 2003.

FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions for Windows are available again - from Microsoft Support

The FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 web download is not available anymore from the Microsoft web sites. This is due to the fact that the mainstream support for FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 web download which follows the Office XP/FrontPage 2002 life cycle expired on 7/11/2006. The following article explains the timelines: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=1902

However, we understand that customers might need this download in situations where existing FPSE2002 installations are hampered in one way or the other. Considering this, it may be possible to obtain this download for reinstallation purposes only if you call MS support.

Here's the text from the KB article that came out last fall when the hotfix was released for Windows Server 2003: When you save changes to a Dynamic Web Template (.dwt) file, all the Web pages that are linked to the .dwt file may not be changed. This problem occurs when the .dwt file is part of a Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions (FPSE) from Microsoft Web site that is running on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer.

Apply MS06-017 to your Windows XP Pro PC running IIS and FPSE2002 and the problem is fixed.
