Expression Web 3 Service Pack 1 Now Available

Microsoft Expression Web 3 Service Pack 1 (SP1) contains significant fixes and improvements in publishing, SuperPreview, file management, extensibility, and other areas of the program. You can get a more complete description of SP1, including a list of issues that were fixed, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 976594: Description of the Microsoft Expression Web 3 Service Pack 1. SP1 includes improvements developed as a result of user input from Microsoft Connect, such as support for custom Windows colors, improved text selection, and better performance.

Why doesn't Expression Web SuperPreview work with Firefox 3.5.5 on Windows XP?

Apparently Firefox 3.5.5 includes a change that broke the ability of 3^rd party applications, such as SuperPreview, to embed Firefox on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Those affected by this issue will see the error text: "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt." Expression Web SuperPreview for Internet Explorer is a free stand-alone visual debugging tool that makes it faster and easier to migrate your sites from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 7 or 8. Expression Web SuperPreview for Internet Explorer shows your web pages rendered in Internet Explorer 6 and either Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8, depending on which version you have installed on your machine.

Microsoft Sets Silverlight 3, Expression 3 Launch Event for July 10, 2009

According to eWeek, Microsoft has set July 10 as the date for a launch event for version 3 of its Silverlight Rich Internet Application (RIA) technology and version 3 of the company's Expression design tools. In a "Save the Date" invitation, Microsoft announced the July 10 date as a launch event for Silverlight 3 and Expression 3, calling on prospective attendees to come and "see for yourself how Microsoft is helping teams light up Web experiences." Although the Microsoft invite said the launch event will be held "in the Bay Area," at 10 a.m. on July 10, it also said that further details would follow.

W3C MobileOK Checks Mobile Friendliness of Websites

Earlier this month, the World Wide Web Consortium announced the availability of the W3C mobileOK checker, a free service that performs various tests on a Web page to help you determine its level of mobile-friendliness.

According to W3C Director Tim Berners-Lee, mobileOK checker builds on the suite of quality assurance tools already offered by W3C and "does a nice job helping you improve your content one step at a time."

To help ensure the best user experience across a variety of mobile devices, the Mobile Web Best Practices Working Group defined a set of recommended guidelines to follow when creating Web documents: the Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0 specification.

This first release of Expression Studio marked a significant milestone in the history of development tools at Microsoft, delivering superior designer-developer workflow and providing designers a set of interaction design, graphic design, Web design, digital asset management and video production tools to deliver better user experiences on Windows and the Web.

New resource for the Expression Web Community

For the last couple months I've been working on a project that launched the week of the 2008 MVP Global Summit. It's a new resource for Microsoft Expression Web users - the Expression Web Wiki. The wiki was 'seeded' with content from the Expression Web Help Files, but as most wikis go, it's up for editing by the community for corrections and additions.

I had a lot of fun and frustration working on this project - I've never done a wiki before and never worked on the Unix platform. I got a lot of help from the MediaWiki Administrators’ Tutorial Guide by Mizanur Rahman, from Pam Keesey, a Technical Writer for Expression Studio at Microsoft, and from the folks at the MediaWiki User Forums. Along the way, I also got a recommendation for a great PHP editor, Eclipse PDT, from a TwitterFriend.

Expression Web 2 Beta - "FrontPage" Design Time Includes are back

One of the reasons I haven't used Expression Web as my main design tool is the lack of a built-in feature comparable to the FrontPage Design Time Include Component. I'm happy to report that the Include function is back in the Expression Web 2 Beta. It's not a button on the Standard Toolbar, but there is a way to add it and the functionality is there. It works the same way it does in FrontPage 2003.
