Speakers are local or regional developers. Topics are based on community interest. Sessions are original and feature a heavy technical focus (no marketing fluff). We will follow the Spirit of the Codecamp Manifesto as described here -
http://www.thedevcommunity.org/codecamps/manifesto.aspx
We are seeking talented .NET developers to make a presentation or two at the First Hartford CodeCamp on August 16th (Saturday). If you have ever wanted fame (& perhaps fortune) - this is your opportunity! We are giving away one MSDN Premium subscription and other prizes for presenters (judged by evals from attendees).
Each session should be about 90mins in duration and the content should be on developer topics that would be of interest to attending developers. Just about anything in .NET and other Microsoft technologies!
Choose a .NET topic of interest and send a brief abstract or outline, your developer experience, expected audience level, etc or any other questions to ctdotnet@gmail.com
Our thanks to New Horizons Computer Learning Center for sponsoring our event.
Our thanks to MyWinHosting & Franklins.NET & InterBridge.NET for their continued support.

CTDOTNET Event (Tuesday April 29th 6 - 8 PM): SQL Server 2008: Should .NET Developers Care? - Adam Machanic (SQL Server MVP & Author).

Event to be held at Microsoft Farmington CT Office.

Please send a RSVP to ctdotnet@gmail.com - we need a pizza/soda count!

The marketing message behind SQL Server 2008 has certainly been odd. Phrases like "pervasive insight" and "beyond relational" are difficult to interpret, and it has been a challenge getting a solid explanation of why developers should actually pay attention to this upcoming release when SQL Server 2005 seems to do the job just fine. In this session we will plumb the depths of what's actually there -- at least as of the just-released CTP 6 -- and check out many of the features that developers will want to become familiar with. We'll talk about table-valued parameters, change tracking, the MERGE statement, the DATE and TIME data types, improved T-SQL syntax and intellisense (finally!), filestreams, spatial data support, and whatever else I can jam in without putting people to sleep.

Adam’s Bio:

Adam Machanic is the SQL Server Practice Lead for Pythian Group, a leading provider of remote, fully and partially outsourced DBA services, for over 100 clients around the world. He has been involved in dozens of SQL Server implementations, for both high-availability OLTP and large-scale data warehouse applications, and has spent quite a bit of time optimizing data access layer performance along the way. Adam has written for numerous web sites and magazines, including SQLblog, Simple Talk, Search SQL Server, SQL Server Professional, CoDe, and VSJ. He has also contributed to several books on SQL Server, including "Expert SQL Server 2005 Development" (Apress, 2007) and "Inside SQL Server 2005: Query Tuning and Optimization" (Microsoft Press, 2007). Adam regularly speaks at user groups, community events, and conferences on a variety of SQL Server and .NET-related topics.

Got my copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional from the Install Fest Microsoft had a few months back…

It came with a nice Product Key, but no instructions on how to take our existing trial edition and upgrade it to the fully registered professional product…

Here’s what I did to get it working:

Step 1.

Insert newly acquired Visual Studio 2008 Professional DVD that you received from Microsoft.

Step 2.

Wait till the auto-run starts, or right click on the CD and run the auto-run.

Step 3.

Select Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008

Step 4.

Wait till it goes through it’s initialization procedure and click next.

Step 5.

You’ll be prompted with a dialog with the Product Key Entry on the bottom and a button that says Upgrade. Enter in your Product Key and click Upgrade! (NOTE: My screen shot does not have the product key box, but it will be located at the bottom of the screen in the white space)

Step 6.

Wash hands repeatedly and enjoy your free software…

That’s all that it took to get my copy up… from trial to Professional!

Partnering with area user groups, we're offering attendees a chance to install the release version Visual Studio 2008, enjoy some food, conversation, and gaming! Since the packaged product hasn't been released yet, here's what will happen:

Bring your laptops (or heck, a desktop!) and your festive selves

Grab a DVD with the Visual Studio 2008 Pro Trial Edition bits

Install and be happy

Play some Halo 3 or Guitar Hero, munch on some food, chat with people

Go home and enjoy VS2008

...wait...

When the packaged product ships, you'll get a copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional in the mail! (Which will *not* require a reinstall of the trial version.)

As an added incentive to get VS2008 installed that evening, we're giving away T-shirts and raffling off a new 8GB Zune among the people who get VS2008 on their machines!

Register by sending a RSVP email to ctdotnet@gmail.com Remaining materials will be available while they last to people who have not RSVPed.
