After a few months of dealing with a borked QWERTY keyboard on my HTC Mogul, I went to the Sprint store and took a look at what they had to offer. My requirements were a QWERTY keyboard, touch screen, and Windows Mobile. My biggest issue, though, was that I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a phone that would not be upgradable to Windows Mobile 7 (a.k.a. "Windows Phone) when it comes out. I was eligible for an upgrade, and the phone that met my requirements and came in at the lowest price (after a $100 rebate) was the Palm Treo Pro. The fact that it was highly recommended by some Windows Mobile MVPs didn’t hurt either.
So far, I am really happy with my choice. Palm makes it really easy to set up ActiveSync and it worked flawlessly the first time I connected. Another thing I like about it is that you have to press the Center button twice to turn on the phone. I recently got an Airave from Sprint, and when I come home, there is some interaction between the phone and the Airave and the phone turns itself on. With the Mogul sitting in my purse, there was the risk of “pocket-dialing” because the touch screen was turned on – that isn’t going to happen with the Treo Pro.
The only downside I have found so far is that it didn’t come with many accessories – I had to buy a car charger and a case. Still on my list are screen protectors, extra styluses, a syncing cradle and a second wall charger to keep in my laptop bag. But I plan on putting most of my HTC Mogul accessories up for sale on Craigslist or eBay, so that will help pay for it all.
If you own a Palm Treo Pro and have any tips or tricks to share, please let me know in the comments – thanks!
