For those of you that might have seen a bright light in the skies of Seattle Thursday Morning at 6:45 AM
- It wasn't provided as a part of the Microsoft Summit Spectacular

But it was my Boeing 757 Delta flight 1244 to Cincinatti with one of the 2 Engines Flamed out, and Failed at 5000 feet over SEATAC after Takeoff!
- shortest commercial flight I ever took (not one I would recommend to anyone)
- a few harrowing moments on emergency return / landing
(lots of fire engines and prayers by all for the remaining engine)

Watching a massive orange glow light up the left of your airplane (turbine blades scraping the engine housing) is not exactly comforting, or an Ideal way to end a Summit!

My 1st reaction, as we broke thru the clouds was
- Wow what a fantastic Orange Sun Set glowing in the sky as a way to End a great Summit
- About that time my mind registered the sun does not set in the morning, and I heard the roar from the others in the back of the plane who might have been more awake to reality (or who had more than a few hours sleep during the Summit)

Next, the Pilot informed us the Warranty must have expired on the left engine and that he was taking it back for an expensive service call
- he didn't say the obvious (that the warrany on both engines was the same)

If I had a camera it would have been a great shot to add to the MVP blogs on What Not to Experience in Seattle or at a MVP Summit

The Co-Pilot appeared to be as "shaken" on the ground afterwards as most us, but the Pilot is in my book to personnally thank again and again,
- he even had the time to talk to us w/ humor in the middle of it all (I'd fly w/ him any day)
- lots of real white faces (and I don't mean that racially) at gate B5 if you passed that way after our "adventure"
- I think even the most seasoned Frequent flier on board probably had at least a moment or two of concern before getting on the next plane.

I'm sure a loaded 757 w/ 1 engine out in the takeoff pattern put a screetching halt to all flights behind us for at least a couple hours.

Gate Departure 6:30 AM, Lift off 6:45 AM, 15 minute "scenic" flight with a wild U-turn, and we were on the ground again at 7:00 AM, then at the gate by 7:15 AM
- Sorry (especially to the smokers) if we inconvenienced you (-'

Almost disappointed me that once we were Safely on the ground they didn't let us use the slides
- that could have been even more fun )-:

Kathleen,

Did you get your new Toshiba e805 Pocket-PC back yet?

Mine came back "repaired" for the second time with a new digitizer, sort of worked for a few hours then failed again. I called for the 3rd time, they offered to "escalate" the case and had a supervisor call me back the next day... that was yesterday. Like you, the supervisor offered a me a new replacement unit upon return of the original one (now 2 months old).

Yesterday afternoon I pulled out the unit to play around with it one last time and to see if anything might have changed. When I pulled it out of it's leather case, I noticed a smudge on the digitizer screen. Prior to turning it on, I used a soft cloth to vigorously buff the smudge off. It took some moderate pressure and rubbing to get it all off. I next slid the battery switch on would you believe the unit worked perfectly and has ever since! I flashed the firmware up to Mobile 2003 SE and that works great too.

Another pick-up box arrived this morning and despite yesterday's "miraculous" healing, I'm still sending it back. It's now packed up and waiting to go out tonight via FedEx.

Now I just wait for the replacement and hope that it isn't a lemon too.

Regards,

John

Hi John:
The replacement was just delivered this afternoon. I haven't taken it out of the box yet.

FWIW, I think you made the right decision - I would have done the same thing.

Please let me know how it works out - I'll be posting the final outcome of my saga here.
# June 23, 2004 5:28 PM

Kathleen Anderson said:

John:

I just opened the box and took a look at what was included - to make sure they sent a cradle, etc., because I had to send all that back. I started reading the specs on the box - I saw 64 MB RAM/16MBROM, SD-Card Slot - but no CF Card slot - turned the box over and discovered - they sent me an e405 - not an e805!!

So, I called Toshiba again - spoke to a supervisor. He said they will send one in advance (not wait for me to send this one back) and in the box with the new one will be a label to send the e405 back to them.

Sigh.

# June 23, 2004 7:32 PM

Kathleen Anderson said:

Unbelievable!

Could they possibly screw things up any more for you???

Just for fun I called Toshiba tech support a couple of minutes ago to check the status of my e805 return/replacement. I was curious to see what model they showed shipped back out to me. Unfortunately, tech support had no information to give me because they don't share the same database with the "depot" where the new replacement unit will ship from.

According to UPS tracking, they received my unit back on the 24th, so tech support said to give it another day or two and if it doesn't arrive. If it doesn't, I'm to call them back and they'll email the depot to find out what's going on.

Good luck,

John L.

John:

The replacement e805 was delivered yesterday afternoon - less than 24 hours after I called them to tell them they'd sent the wrong one.

At this point, knock on wood, things are going well.

Even if they could check the database for you and told you a new e805 is on the way, don't get too excited until you open the box for yourself. The packing slip that came with the e405 said e805!

The W3C is looking old and tired (and not just its website). To me the only thing it has acheived is to open the floodgates for new browsers to be developed which can claim to be 'standards compliant,' although they have bespoke rendering engines and inevitable differences. 90% of my site visitors use Internet Explorer. The advent of Mozilla, Opera and the like simply make my role as a web developer harder as I have to deal with each browser's quirks. I would love to see Microsoft set the defacto standards for the web. I'm fed up with ankle-biting upstart, bleeding-heart, open-source fanatics claiming their standards are better than those set by the market leader of the computer software industry.

MS has acheived the incredible - they opened the desktop market to the masses. As a web developer you owe them a lot. They have brought your visitors.. and your customers. Without Windows (and it's billions of dollars worth of UI research), PC's would still be the domain of the geek. Microsoft (like many large corporates) have been ruthless, but this is just the reality of real-world business.

Granted, IE hasn't been re-released in a long time but as a mark of it's stature, it's still the leader of the pack. With the addition of the excellent Google toolbar it sports a pop-up blocker, form auto-filler and best of all - ingenius integration with the Google search engine. Google have not bothered creating various different versions of the toolbar for the rest of the browser rabble, and good on them!

There are those who hold up "tabbed browsing" as the be-all-and-end-all of the browser experience. Well, you might like to experiment with docking the start-bar to the side of your screen (you can then see all the titles of your open IE windows). Since IE is well cached by Windows, new browser instances open in a jiffy. You can even have several browsers open on one desktop in any layout. Opera/Mozilla's tabbed browsing doesn't add much more than that. And yes, the "gestures" plugin for Mozilla is cool but at the end of the day it's just a gimmick. Most Microsoft mice feature additional buttons which work much more elegantly.

At the dawn of personal computing there were rival platforms, and it took a while to establish the defacto standard (the x86 architecture). It was only then that PC's started appearing in the consumer market. I don't believe any buerocratic bodies were required to supervise this progression. It happened because of cold, hard business competition. Although many rival platforms fell by the wayside in the process, the end result was a huge positive step for computer science in general. Intel created the x86 and once the standard was set, the doors were opened for healthy competition from the x86 clone market. Imagine the design headaches that would be resolved if we had one standard for HTML/CSS/Javascript. Microsoft present a very strong proposition. At the end of the day, W3C is just a glorified discussion board. Why should MS feel they have any responsibility to this organisation?

With IE, Microsoft have created (and assimilated) a well-thought-out and very powerful javascript DOM that, for example, supports element iteration much more flexibly than the W3C model. They have also created a rich set of CSS filter pseudo-classes which are light years ahead of CSS2. And we're talking about a model that MS designed several years ago. If CSS3 ever gets decided on by whichever buerocratic committee, it will be taking its lead from Microsoft's innovation.

When the next iteration of IE is released I'm hoping it will include support for PNGs with an alpha channel. This is the only feature of any importance that the rival browsers are starting to pick up. Once this is in the bag IE has won.

Goodbye, W3C. Hello, standards!

This is an excellent point.

We use a CMS product at work. It's aimed at schools and school districts so it's much more targeted than compared to, say, CMS server.

One of the things I really hate about it is that there is no consistent Home link.

When you add new "sections," the entire menu changes for that new section. This is good because you don't have extra navigation "noise." But they don't automatically include a link back to the parent section. And worse, the Home link they do create is for that section.

I think I'll have to forward that link along and see if I can stir things up. :)

We're not altogether against the use of CAPTCHA or anything else that increases security and protects against abuse of resources, so long as the scheme is accessible and does not exclude the blind! If the host of these blogs provides CAPTCHA as a security measure, that CAPTCHA ought to include an audio alternative. It should not be possible for an individual blogger to make their comment posting functionality inaccessible. I see accessibility of CAPTCHA as being the responsibility of the blog hosting service.
Guess I have yet another letter to write? The complete and absolute lock out presented by visual verification schemes without any accessible alternatives is huge and extremely dangerous to the blind!

It is all about the money. Back in browser wars 1 they made IE available for Windows 3.1 as late as 2000 just because they wanted to make sure that Win3.1 users had a version of IE that was more up to date than the version of Netscape for their platform. Windows 3.1 was released in 1992 so they got a new IE 8 years after release.

Now we have Win2k and MS wants people to move off this decent system and shell out money for XP, so they're witholding IE7 for their platform even though porting an XP app to Win2k is a lot easier than Win9x to Win3.1 as Win3.1 is only 16 bit.

However, as MS are trying to push .NET down peoples throats they're releasing new versions of that framework for older versions of Windows

Down in UK, though i get server error message:

Gmail is temporarily unavailable. Cross your fingers and try again in a few minutes. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Only a few weeks ago I tried using Thunderbird so that I could read my gmail messages offline if the worst happened. However, I'm behind a uni firewall so wasn't able to use the ports specified by gmail for pop access. Instead I used MrPostman to extract messages. Gmail promptly closed down my account within 2 minutes for abnormal usage reasons. I wasn't able to access my account for a period of 24 hours. Very frustrating. Now I have started to migrate back to Yahoo. Also, such an incident has put me off Google's services in general. This is due to their total lack of acknowledgement or response to email messages. I was first attracted to Gmail because of the intuitive way of grouping messages by conversations. However, if the service is not 100% reliable and they have no concept of customer service then I'll simply move. I'm aware that gmail is a beta product so I'll come back when it's out of it's beta stage.

Unfortunately, it's not just a matter of people not being able to validate for a few days.  I purchased Windows Ultimate on launch day and validated many months ago.  Now, all of a sudden, I'm being considered a possible "victim of piracy" and I'm being treated like one as well.  My Aero UI has been disabled and I have a nag screen on my desktop telling me that "this copy of Windows is not genuine".

I beg to differ.

Is there any security issue here? When browsing, I like the ability to determine if certain things are going to execute or not (be it for security or spam-reduction). This sounds like I will now lose that control with the next update to IE.

"This doesn't make any difference to browsing speed or security. The "Click to Activate" thing does NOT prevent a control from running. "Click to Activate" only prevents a user from interacting with the control until they have clicked on it. This was never and should never be seen as a security enhancement.

Use the "Manage Add-ons" option under tools if you want to prevent controls from actually running."

I started after the bandages and stitches (not all Dr's use stitches) were removed 4 days later. I'm now more limted than before the surgery, but I can see improvement almost from day to day. Hi Kathleen,

I have the Panasonic KX-TG2424 unit and cannot recommend this strongly enough.

It comes with Base and 2 handsets.  Everything you ask for is in the featureset with the exception of being able to use a headset on the base.  The reason is that the base does not have a builtin handset - it's simply the wireless receiver/transmitter that plugs into the wall.

All other features and more are in each handset.

Battery life is amazing.  I've had these 3 years with no issues and still use the original batteries.

<p>I agree that Network Solutions’ business plan to “reserve” all available name search queries was questionable from an ethics and business point of view. I, for one, am surprised that Network Solutions and ICANN have been sued in a class action format.</p>

<p>I originally posted about potential consumer protection liability related to NSI’s reserve policy <a href="tcattorney.typepad.com/.../a>, but NSI quickly modified it’s policy and provided adequate notice on its web site in order to inform consumers that it would be reserving searched domains. That post is found <a href="tcattorney.typepad.com/.../a>.&nbsp; </p>

<p>Consumer protection lawsuits are all about misrepresentation and “deception.”; Once Network Solutions posted notice on its web site that it would be engaging in this particular business practice, it is hard to imagine how consumers would argue they were “deceived.”</p>

<p>As far as ICANN liability, the only possibility is an argument that Network Solutions was violating the accreditation agreement with ICANN and ICANN failed to follow-up on that known violation. However, I have not seen any good analysis on the Internet which suggests that a violation of policy did occur.</p>

Otherwise there’s not much else to note. Not that I’m complaining but if you have a Mogul then Live Search and the HTC home add-on are much more satisfying upgrades. Matter of fact the I used the HHC (HTC Home Customizer app) then the “Diamond Home (HHC Pack).zip (linked here forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php ) to provide a much improved UI that approximates the upcoming HTC Diamond.

That would be nice, sweetie - you did a great job last time! But I think I'll be OK - it won't be nearly as bad as the rotator cuff recovery was.

Yes, me too - no problems before but now can not use - badly affecting my ability to work and likely to get me moving to an iPhone or Blackberry very soon if a solution is not forthcoming.

I had this problem. Open Active Sync on your phone and see where the phone is stopping. That is where the error would be. Mine was with the email. I just told Windows Mobile Device Center, since i am running Vista, to not sync my mail. It deleted the mail on the phone. Then I told it to sync the mail again. And now it works like it should. I think my problem was there were too many emails backed up that needed to be synced and it caused an overflow.

That's my solution. I hope that helps someone else.

I have the samsung i760 with WM 6.1 syncing on 2 PC's one running Office 2003 and the other Office 2007, both on XP SP3. It took deleting the profiles a few times on both machine before they started to sync correctly. Nice to know there are others with the same issue at first, but it is possible. A co-worker has his WM6.1 syncing to 2 PC and a Mac. I dare not even try it or see how/why he is doing it.

A workaround for this problem is to de-activate the syncing of calendar and contacts, then re-enabling them one at a time. Bad thing is you have to do this every time that you have synced with another computer...

Here's what I discovered after considering the above comments. If the data is different on two computers, then you get this error. Therefore, you have to decide which set of data you want to backup. For example, I also use dashwire to backup my contacts. That is where I was getting the activesync error, was in my contacts. I deleted the contacts backup on activesync and use dashwire solely and that solved the problem.

My problem:

I had installed Microsoft Expression Web 2 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T500 laptop, but something went awry and I attempted to delete the program via Add and Remove Programs on the Control Panel.  However, Expression Web 2 is still listed in the program population list in Control Panel.

When I put the disk in to reinstall the program, I get "Setup, Detection Progress" and a choice for "Maintenance: Change, Repair or Remove." Each choice does not succeed in reinstalling Expression Web 2. "Change" gives me a message "Installation Failed" and refers to an Error 2.  "Repair" gives a message "Index (zero based) must be greater than or equal to zero and less than the size of the argument list."  "Remove" also says that it could not be removed because of Error 2.  When I get to Add or Remove Programs on the Control Panel, under "Remove" I get "Setup Error; Setup cannot find the required setup controller file." Under "Change" I get the same message.

Help me either reload the program or get rid of it on my computer because when I click to open a Microsoft Word document I get a message "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Expression Web 2"  and then "Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. For other potential solutions to this problem see SETUP.CHM." I haven't been able to find "SETUP.CHM anywhere.  This happens every time I try to open a Word document or a PowerPoint slide; the computer tries to configure Expression Web 2 each time.  Very discouraging!
