Even more on the Knowledge Network
Do you get the idea I really like social networking?
I have downloaded and installed both the client and the server programs that make up the Knowledge Network system. I must say I am impressed with the added features that you get when you use both.
I did have some issues running the client. The client documentation states that you need to extract the MSI and change the location of the server within it using a program called Orca (not to be confused with the next version of Visual Studio). I hope there is a better way of doing this in the released code but all in all it was not too bad.
The first issue I had was that my login name did not match the alias for my account in the Global Access List so the client was not able to find me. Once I had my IT department fix that (long story behind the reason it did not match which involves lawyers and former companies
) I was able to run the client.
It allows you to select which Email folders you want to use to help determine who your colleagues are (BTW, I am using Office2007 B2 but you can use Office 2003 as well although I do not know about earlier versions) as well as your instant messenger contacts.
At the company I work for very few of my IM contacts from work use their corporate Email address as their IM address so that was not terribly useful in getting coworkers but it did find a lot of External contacts (although I would imagine I have very few IM contacts compared to most. I only have 36).
Another feature (that I have not quite figured out yet) is keywords. These are gathered from the Emails I selected to be indexed and then presented as a list along with the first occurance of each keyword, the last occurance, and how many times it occurs. So, for instance, the word "MVP" shows up 181 times in my Emails so it is presented as a keyword.
Finally, you can choose whether or not you agree with the program's choices of Colleagues, External Contacts, and Keywords. If you do not want any entries in any of these categories published to the server you can delete them from the list.
Once you are satisfied with the entries you publish them to the server. This brings me to the second issue I had. Remember in the beginning of the post when I said you need to change the location of the server? Evidently you need to enter the correct server otherwise the program will not work!
I did not enter the correct FQDN for my server and was getting publishing errors.
All in all, it is a great program and I thank Sameer Mahajan and Raveendrnathan Loganathan for their help with some of the issues I had.
