Too cool. Got to meet several new people from the Twitterverse (I am @ShanesCows in case you were wondering). I would list the people but I never know if that is appropriate or not. Anyway.

I promised a download PDF of all of the sessions I did so here they are.

Todd Klindt and I did a whole day workshop on being a SharePoint administrator. For that session I have two decks. The SharePoint Admin deck is old faithful. It is all of the core Admin stuff we have delivered around the world brought back to glory once again. Good stuff. The other deck is stolen straight from my SharePoint Administrator's Class and it all of the dev things we admins need to know, like Features, Solution Packages, and Code Access Security (EEK!). You can get that deck here. Dealing with developers is fun. ;)

The following day I had to do my search session all by myself. Very sad. You can grab that deck here.

Thought I would quickly list out some of my upcoming usergroups, webcasts, trainings, and conferences. Just so you know what to avoid. ;)

Available now from your desk:

Todd and I while at TechEd recorded a quick TechTalk – SharePoint: What could possibly go wrong? "SharePoint environments are like snowflakes. Each one is intricate and it seems no two are alike. In this TechTalk, Shane and Todd talk about some of the things done wrong in SharePoint installations they've seen. They also talk about how to fix those things." Available for a free viewing at http://www.msteched.com/online/view.aspx?tid=8d46ef7a-7455-4854-a66d-0fd692766b58

May 21, 2009 Columbus, Ohio:

I will be presenting at the Columbus Usergroup monthly meeting at 5:30 pm. This will be my second trip to hang out with this group so it should be fun. Someone has graciously offered to let me odd their server farm in front of everyone. Yikes! So I will be looking for mistakes in the install and config and giving guidance on common mistakes along the way. http://www.sharepointgroups.org/cospug/default.aspx

May 22, 2009 Columbus, Ohio:

I get to do my first keynote! The COSPUG is having a one day FREE SharePoint Show-n-tell event! http://www.sharepointgroups.org/cospug/Pages/Show-N-Tell.aspx I know this is late notice but if you can register now before spots fill up. This will be an awesome day of practical experience.

June 1, 2009 your desk:

I will be doing a virtual usergroup presentation for SharePoint Nation. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=83970739778 Will be those core admin topics making sure that deployment was done right.

June 1, 2009 – June 5, 2009 your desk:

My world famous admin webcast is running this week. With everyone having their training budgets (especially travel) being cut so hard the online class has become quite popular. Need hardcore admin training you have come to the right place. http://www.criticalpathtraining.com/Schedule/Pages/090601-WC-SPA401-Webcast.aspx

June 15, 2009 – June 19, 2009 Dallas, Texas:

Todd Klindt and I are doing the SharePoint Survival Camp in beautiful Dallas Texas. http://www.criticalpathtraining.com/Schedule/Pages/20090615-SSC401-Dallas.aspx You can't have more fun (or learn more) about SharePoint administration in five days anywhere else.

June 22, 2009 – June 24, 2009 Boston, Massachusetts:

SPTechcon rules! Enough said. http://www.sptechcon.com Lots of top notch speakers talking about lots of fun things. Todd and I will be there doing a one day workshop and then some other scattered sessions. This will be a party. Use ShanesCows as your registration code to save some $$$.

I have a few other things in the hopper but that is enough for now.

The only right answer is spending the day with Todd and I discussing SharePoint Governance. Duh! ;)

Check out PreCon 15 http://www.msteched.com/teched/seminars.aspx

Last year Todd and I sold out our precon event on SharePoint Upgrades and Administration

and it was such a fun filled comedy fest we were invited back this year. Sadly it will be the same jokes but all new educational material. Also, last year we gave away a Zune and an XBOX 360. No promises for this year's giveaways but… I typically like to offer up all of Todd's paycheck for giveaways cause I am nice that way.

Why Governance? Who needs Governance of SharePoint anyway? The short answer? EVERYONE! Governance is crucial to keeping that awesome SharePoint environment you setup awesome. A brief description follows:

This session takes you through the process of developing a successful implementation plan for your Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) deployment. Determining the goals and vision, stakeholders, level of customization or development, rollout, phasing, intranet, extranet, and Internet considerations and taxonomy of your portal are all discussed through lectures, hands-on experience, and case studies. This class not only covers what you should do, but also real world scenarios and best practices.

More information on TechEd registration which is currently $200 off. http://www.msteched.com/teched/registration-info.aspx

If you are going to be at http://www.sptechcon.com then you should plan on some SharePoint socializing in the grandest of traditions, by attending SharePint. This age old tradition was started by Andrew Connell and is now starting to occur everywhere there is are SharePoint people to be found. For details on this event check out - http://jhaebets.wordpress.com/2009/01/15/sptechcon-sharepint/

Should be a fun conference. Why? It starts out with a 1 day admin bonanza with Todd Klindt and yours truly. And just in case that isn't complete worth the price of admission they have like 3 more days of content, sprinkled with random sessions from us. LOL

No seriously. Should be a really cool conference Jan 27 – 29 with some big name speakers including the infamous Tom Rizzo. Complete list here. The first day will feature full day and half day sessions while the remaining two will be the traditional 75 minutes sessions. I am really looking forward to the event, especially since there will be snow in Cincinnati in January but not in San Francisco. J I also heard yesterday the conference is going to sell out soon so you may need to poke your boss with a big stick to get this approved in time.

Most of the SharePoint911 crew will be at the conference so look for a little private get together at some point during the week. Stop by our both to get the scoop. J

Just click on the pretty link of me. You do have to register to see the webcast. The description is:

At a recent SharePoint conference, Bill Gates claimed that "SharePoint is the fastest-growing server product Microsoft has ever had." What about your organization? Is SharePoint beginning to get out of control? Some of the most common challenges administrators face today include: poorly managed permissions, uncontrolled growth of sites and site collections, limited visibility into user activity, depleted or poorly utilized SharePoint resources, and the need to centrally control users, sites and site collections. In this hands-on webcast, Microsoft SharePoint MVP Shane Young will discuss the top ways to manage a rapidly growing SharePoint deployment so you can help manage to your organization's governance policies. Topics covered include: permissions management and analysis, log files, monitoring and analyzing drive space, trend analysis, database maintenance, solution packages, data management and rearrangement, and activity monitoring and analysis.

Sounds like fun? i thought so. It is the quickest rundown of all of these things you will find.

Let me know what you think.

Tomorrow night I will be doing one of my new favorite talks, Installing SharePoint properly. Essentially what I do in this talk is fire up my VPC and walk you through an install from beginning to end and all of the considerations that go along the way. There are some slides that go with it but most of the conversation is just that, talking through the process. You can download the presentation here http://www.sharepoint911.com/Documents/Indiana%20User%20Group%20October%202008.pdf but, just a heads up, I will not make it through all of the slides as the hands on is way more important. Don't forget, bring your questions! Audience participation is what makes these so much fun.

And just in case you are thinking, I have installed SharePoint before I don't need this information, I would respectfully disagree. There are very few installs out in the wild that were done 100% correctly, even when you followed one of the books. And if you do come and you did everything right then isn't that a great feeling anyway. J

As always I will give away some cool stuff, at least a couple of books, and maybe something bigger that requires electricity. ;)

My last post was April 1 and I apologize. I would like to tell you that this post is going to be chocked full of new content but alas I would be lying. Instead I want to offer up my apologizes and tell you about what is in the works.

New Search Book

About a month ago I was asked to be part of a very cool project. Richard Riley (Sr. Program Manager, Search), Tom Rizzo (Richard's bosses boss), and myself are working on a new book dedicated to Enterprise search. We are hoping to have it out by early fall. I just turned in my last chapter today. Shew! I wish I could tell you more about the chapters but some of the stuff in the book is still under NDA. That is how bleeding edge the information in the book will be. In one place there was nothing to link to so I say "go here and search for X it should be there by now". Anyway, if you are into Search (and who isn't) go ahead and buy the book now. Professional Microsoft SharePoint Search

New Admin Book

Steve Caravajal (Microsoft Enterprise Architect), Todd Klindt (SharePoint MVP and straight man), and me have started our own book endeavor. We have decide to take my SharePoint Administration training class, expand a little, and make it into a book. Tentatively titled Inside SharePoint Administration. As I type this I am building my Windows 2008 VPC so I can right the step-by-step guidance for installing MOSS SP1 and configuring Kerberos in this environment. The book is chocked full of advanced SharePoint administration topics including Power Shell for administrators, backups and disaster recovery, performance optimization, SQL admin, planning and deploying for extranets, and the list goes on. This book will be too awesome.

TechEd 2008

TechEd is quickly approaching and this year I am trying something new. Not only am I doing 3 breakout sessions that will be full of guest speakers and lots of new information and a chalk talk, I am also doing a preconference day. The preconference day will cover Upgrading from 2003 to 2007 and then how things are different now for an administrator. To do this I have teamed up with Todd Klindt again. Oh yeah, did I mention this will be in the hands on lab format? Meaning you will not only get guidance on doing the upgrade but then get to do an upgrade. Too fun. More information here https://www.msteched.com/itpro/public/precons.aspx

I am also a featured speaker this year which is quite an honor. Not sure it gets me much than the cool picture in Silverlight but it is a start.

My sessions are Creating Portals that last (Taxonomy and Governance), Admin 1, and Admin 2. For a list of all session check out this page https://www.msteched.com/itpro/public/sessions.aspx

One more thing about TechEd SharePoint911 and the Ted Pattison Group will be doing a booth so stop by and say hello. The booth will be open both weeks. And if you ask really nicely you may be able to get one of the limited edition t-shirts. As any good vendor we will have a supply of t-shirts for the masses but for the lucky few that know to ask for them we will be giving away a special shirt. I have already said to much but there is 3 different shirts and they…. Well they are just too much to even describe in words. You want one! (and not just to wash your car with)

Ok, I promise to get something geeky and technical up here asap, so stay tuned!

Come and spend 4 days with me hanging out in Boston. How much more fun can it be? I even promise to teach you some SharePoint in the process. Though former students will also tell you that dumb jokes will be plentiful also. ;)

1/28 - Professional SharePoint Administration – Online version. That is right, you sit at your desk and learn. I sit in my pajamas and teach.

3/3 – The SharePoint Conference – Seattle, WA. I am doing 3 sessions at this fabulous conference in March. If you can only go to one conference this year this would be my pick. They haven't posted all of the sessions yet but the ones I have seen are WOW! Lots of new content will come out this week.

I have a ton more conference and classes scheduled but these will get you started. I just submitted some TechEd Sessions so I will cross my fingers that I get to spread the SharePoint love in Orlando this year. Then I got to start working on the international schedule. Should be a fun year.

This evening's talk discusses how to configure the SharePoint Search Service and how to extend the user interface of a SharePoint site by adding and connecting together the MOSS Search Web Parts. The session also explores how to write custom code against the SharePoint Server object model to execute custom queries against the search engine as well as how to process the search result using XSLT.
