Last week I had the privilege of speaking at the SharePoint Technology Conference in Boston. Too cool. Got to meet several new people from the Twitterverse (I am @ShanesCows in case you were wondering). I would list the people but I never know if that is appropriate or not. Anyway.

I promised a download PDF of all of the sessions I did so here they are.

Todd Klindt and I did a whole day workshop on being a SharePoint administrator. For that session I have two decks. The SharePoint Admin deck is old faithful. It is all of the core Admin stuff we have delivered around the world brought back to glory once again. Good stuff. The other deck is stolen straight from my SharePoint Administrator's Class and it all of the dev things we admins need to know, like Features, Solution Packages, and Code Access Security (EEK!). You can get that deck here. Dealing with developers is fun. ;)

The following day I had to do my search session all by myself. Very sad. You can grab that deck here.

Last year Todd and I sold out our precon event on SharePoint Upgrades and Administration

Should be a fun conference. Why? It starts out with a 1 day admin bonanza with Todd Klindt and yours truly. And just in case that isn't complete worth the price of admission they have like 3 more days of content, sprinkled with random sessions from us. LOL

No seriously. Should be a really cool conference Jan 27 – 29 with some big name speakers including the infamous Tom Rizzo. Complete list here. The first day will feature full day and half day sessions while the remaining two will be the traditional 75 minutes sessions. I am really looking forward to the event, especially since there will be snow in Cincinnati in January but not in San Francisco. J I also heard yesterday the conference is going to sell out soon so you may need to poke your boss with a big stick to get this approved in time.

Most of the SharePoint911 crew will be at the conference so look for a little private get together at some point during the week. Stop by our both to get the scoop. J

Tomorrow night I will be doing one of my new favorite talks, Installing SharePoint properly. Essentially what I do in this talk is fire up my VPC and walk you through an install from beginning to end and all of the considerations that go along the way. There are some slides that go with it but most of the conversation is just that, talking through the process. Don't forget, bring your questions! Audience participation is what makes these so much fun.

And just in case you are thinking, I have installed SharePoint before I don't need this information, I would respectfully disagree. There are very few installs out in the wild that were done 100% correctly, even when you followed one of the books. And if you do come and you did everything right then isn't that a great feeling anyway. J

Seriously, I am a slacker. My last post was April 1 and I apologize. I would like to tell you that this post is going to be chocked full of new content but alas I would be lying. Instead I want to offer up my apologizes and tell you about what is in the works.

New Search Book

About a month ago I was asked to be part of a very cool project. Richard Riley (Sr. Program Manager, Search), Tom Rizzo (Richard's bosses boss), and myself are working on a new book dedicated to Enterprise search. We are hoping to have it out by early fall. I just turned in my last chapter today. Shew! I wish I could tell you more about the chapters but some of the stuff in the book is still under NDA. That is how bleeding edge the information in the book will be. In one place there was nothing to link to so I say "go here and search for X it should be there by now". New Admin Book

Steve Caravajal (Microsoft Enterprise Architect), Todd Klindt (SharePoint MVP and straight man), and me have started our own book endeavor. We have decide to take my SharePoint Administration training class, expand a little, and make it into a book. Tentatively titled Inside SharePoint Administration. As I type this I am building my Windows 2008 VPC so I can right the step-by-step guidance for installing MOSS SP1 and configuring Kerberos in this environment. The book is chocked full of advanced SharePoint administration topics including Power Shell for administrators, backups and disaster recovery, performance optimization, SQL admin, planning and deploying for extranets, and the list goes on. This book will be too awesome.

TechEd 2008

TechEd is quickly approaching and this year I am trying something new. Not only am I doing 3 breakout sessions that will be full of guest speakers and lots of new information and a chalk talk, I am also doing a preconference day. The preconference day will cover Upgrading from 2003 to 2007 and then how things are different now for an administrator. To do this I have teamed up with Todd Klindt again. Oh yeah, did I mention this will be in the hands on lab format? Meaning you will not only get guidance on doing the upgrade but then get to do an upgrade. Too fun. I am also a featured speaker this year which is quite an honor. Not sure it gets me much than the cool picture in Silverlight but it is a start.

1/28 - Professional SharePoint Administration – Online version. That is right, you sit at your desk and learn. I sit in my pajamas and teach.

3/3 – The SharePoint Conference – Seattle, WA. I am doing 3 sessions at this fabulous conference in March. If you can only go to one conference this year this would be my pick. They haven't posted all of the sessions yet but the ones I have seen are WOW! Lots of new content will come out this week.

I have a ton more conference and classes scheduled but these will get you started. I just submitted some TechEd Sessions so I will cross my fingers that I get to spread the SharePoint love in Orlando this year. Then I got to start working on the international schedule. Should be a fun year.

Our October meeting will host a talk by not just one, but two SharePoint MVPs. Shane Young and Ted Pattison will co-present a session titled Configuring and Extending Enterprise Search with SharePoint Server 2007.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) includes out-of-the-box support for crawling and searching the content and documents stored inside Windows file shares, SharePoint sites, Exchange Public Folders, Lotus Notes, web sites and the Business Data Catalog (BDC). This evening's talk discusses how to configure the SharePoint Search Service and how to extend the user interface of a SharePoint site by adding and connecting together the MOSS Search Web Parts. The session also explores how to write custom code against the SharePoint Server object model to execute custom queries against the search engine as well as how to process the search result using XSLT. Come and ye shall find!
