Change what Page Layout you are using

Boring Story

http://www.sharepoint911.com was hosted on a WSS v2 Team Site with a custom site definition. Since RTM I have wanted to make the switch to the site running on MOSS 2007. I purchased new hardware and made some plans. Like every non customer project it kept getting pushed further and further down the To-Do list. The v2 site was working fine and driving business. Then Monday happened. We originally thought the server it was hosted on had just drank too much at the Memorial Day party and had a hangover. A quick reboot and it would be back in business. Wrong answer. Server was dead. :(

So instead of rebuilding a v2 box and recovering from the backups we decided to expedite our move to MOSS. If you take a look at the site now you can see it is still a little rough around the edges but at least it is up. We have lots of plans for making the site look better and adding some new functionality. (Wonder how long that will take?) Anyway, had a problem that was bugging us so I thought I would post a quickie.

Technical details

When you create a page in a publishing site you have to choose what page layout you want to use. Well, what happens if you chose wrong? How do you change the page layout your page is associated with? It is actually pretty simple if you know where to look.

  • Browse to the page
  • Click Site Actions, Edit Page
  • From the tool bar click Page
  • In the drop down list click Page Settings
  • Now pick your Page Layout
  • Click OK

I looked everywhere for this setting. I knew it had to be simple and it was. Hopefully this blog post saves someone else lots of hunt and clicking.

This does not work in my case. Can this be because I have already filled the page with content?

This only appears to work with 'publishing' type pages. Any one know how to do this for other types of pages?

Is it possible to do this at run time?

eg site/MyPubPage

Obviously Content Types would have to be the same/consistent.

I would envisage different Page Layouts having different webparts on them that were filtered by field controls.

Thanks

Martin

I too did not find that setting on the page settings page (after going to edit page)-- I did find a place that would let me change it

Go to View All Site Content and find the "pages" library - or which ever library the page is in. Hover over that page and choose edit from the context menu.

However it only had a few of the content types to choose from - (not the one I was after)

hrmph I guess I still do not have a full grasp on how content types work

Yeah I too could not choose the layout I wanted from the list. There is only one layout available, saying '(Welcome Page) Welcome page with summary links'.

When I make a new page in the mini-site I can choose the layout I want from the list of layouts, but not in the default page that is created when I create a new site. I'm sure this stuff could be made more intuitive!

Browse to the page

Click Site Actions, Edit Page

From the tool bar click Page

In the drop down list click Page Settings

Now pick your Page Layout

Click OK

---------------

Need Help - I do not see a "tool bar".  Can some help in ABC terms.  This is driving us nuts!!!

This is how it works for my MOSS site...your mileage may vary:

1) Go to "View All Site Content" in the section you want to change page layouts on and use the dropdown to Edit Properties on a page.

2) Choose the Content Type...this is what drives the list of layouts I have to choose from on my site.

3) Go into the page and edit the page settings...you should now have the proper list of Page Layouts to choose from.

I had to do some trial and error on this to find the rite Content type for the layout I wanted to use.

Hope this helps,

Marc

Is there a quick way to change the page layouts of multiple pages in one go.

I tried to explore this in sharepoint designer but could not find any thing useful.

Shane,

Thank you for the nice tip. I have been searching for this workaround on net and found this.

Prashant,

You might take a look at my post describing how to change page layouts programmatically.  You could call the method I describe multiple times, or you could modify it to work with an array instead of a single page.

What a great workaround!  I was attempting to change the default page (Basic Article page) that was used when you convert an office 2007 document to a webpage & could not find an easy way to do it without messing with code etc.  I ended up creating a custom page layout with SP Designer (Based on the PageFromDocLayout).  Now after converting a new document I just choose my custom page layout from the list & publish it.  You saved me hours of work.  Thanks for sharing Shane.  :)

These instructions do not seem to hold true for plain WSS3 (we're not using MOSS). Is there a way to change a page's webpart layout for WSS3? I've searched everywhere and can not find anything that applies to me. I'm sure someone out there has had the need to do this. For example, the default page is "Header, Right Column, Body" and I'd like to change it to "Header, Footer, 3 Columns".

These instructions don't work for WSS. :(  If you want to do this in WSS you have to edit the page directly with SharePoint Designer.
