crosspost from http://rextang.net/blogs/work/

The last day of TechEd 2006 here at Yokohama, Japan, rainy day...

In the morning there were sessions about RFID, C++/CLI Programming that's releated to developers; also others mainly releated to IT System Management like SQL Server 2005 Disaster Recovery, SMS2003, etc.

In the afternoon, managed to attend session "T1-401 Software Factory Implementation". actually this topic was talked at last year's TechEd USA at Florida (my posts here and here), and this time is a nice chance to review the concept and tools that's ready to support the process. Some DSL Tools are ready, and some still under development or in beta progress. The integration of Software Factory process into Visual Studio Team System is a good point to combine all the tools / process in a united development platform. This should take some time to read and understand all the definitions of process and what are they really mean, but after mastered them, should be a very powerful process to make software engineering to another fun and productive level!

In the rest of afternoon I choosed to stay at MVP lounge trying to know more MVPs here at Japan. There is a very big and popular private community site called mixi.jp (invitation based) here at Japan, MSMVPs here also got their own private community on mixi , sharing information and keep in touch with each others.

As a conclusion of TechEd 2006 here at Yokohama, Japan, some of the topics that should be important at Microsoft world next year:

.NET Framework 3.0

Windows Presentation Foundation

Windows Communication Foundation

Windows Workflow Foundation

Visual Studio Team System

Windows Vista

Windows Longhorn Server

Office System 2007

Windows Compute Cluster Server

etc...

Although I do think that LINQ should be another important topic in this year's TechEd, didn't see any session here at Japan talking about it (Also PowerShell !! ).

One of the other good things to attend TechEd here is that it gave me a chance to know new friends here at Japan. I would like to thank MVP lead here at Microsoft Japan again to invite me to this event and also glad to know all the MVPs here at Japan, thanks and see you all in next local event! :)

crosspost from http://rextang.net/blogs/work/

Day 3 of TechEd 2006 here at Yokohama, Japan. sunny day!

In the morning sessions Shanku Niyogi gave 2 sessions all about Atlas / Ajax / ASP.NET 2.0. Lunch time there was a "SQL Server 2005 Ready Lunch" event gathering attendees talking about SQL Server 2005.

I managed to attend David J. Anderson's session "T5-404 Implement MSF Agile and CMMI Process using Visual Studio Team System". it's a nice talk to review the project management stuffs as well as how tools can make project manager's work more efficiently. David spend some time explaining some of the 50 reports Visual Studio Team System generated and I found them very useful to view project progress in another aspects.

As I was trying to attend the next session that Frederick Chong talking about SaaS (Software as a Service), found that it changed the session time to this morning, pity.

So the rest of the afternoon I was stay at MVP lounge room and talking with Japan MVPs. also managed to meet Japan MVP Lead Mr. Koita, thanks him to invited me to Japan TechEd 2006.

After today's sessions, there was a "Community Party" held today. all the major Japan .NET community members were invited to this party, including MSMVPs at Japan.

The speaking of Microsoft Japan CEO Darren Huston.

The speaking of Microsoft Worldwide Director of MVP Program, Sean O'Driscoll.

In the middle of the party, managed to get a pic with Sean O'Driscoll and Miss. Mayumi Suzuki, MVP Program Manager of Microsoft Japan.

well, it's a nice party for me who just started my life and work here at Tokyo, Japan, to know new friends that are working in Microsoft technologies. nice event, nice weather. beautiful scene here at Yokohama harbor, although, there was an earthquake in the afternoon...

Day 2 of TechEd Japan, cloudy day...

Spending some time at MVP lounge to know new MVP friends here at Japan, managed to catch the last session, T1-303 Responsibilities of IT Architects and Project Managers. As a result, Japan's IT working style is different from other countries, made it difficult for clearify responsibilities in real project management situations. Project managers and IT architects here in Japan usually have to carry responsibilities in projects, but they don't have really decision rights to decide how things should be done. This should be changed in order to create a better project management environment here in Japan.

There was also a MVP private session about game design on XBox 360 platform. a new XNA game development framework is going to release a beta version today (8/30) , the future windows game platform will also be in a "Live!" style, means game players can communicate with not only gaming partners, but also other users who are surfing internet. Saw a nice XBox 360 demo today, really cool!

After the last session today, there was Attendee Party. Attendees have free pass to the party, also got free food and drinks and some shows.

crosspost from http://rextang.net/blogs/work/

Today is the first day of TechEd 2006 at Yokohama, Japan. I got up at early morning to catch the train at 8AM to Yokohama from Shinjuku JR station. Arrived Pacifico Yokohama conference center at around 9AM for the registration process. Nice weather today!

A lot of IT Pros / Developers in Japan are coming to this event, the main lobby is full of people and sponser spots, also got food area for breakfast and snacks.

TechEd Japan's keynote should be Japanese version of the formal keynote from TechEd 2006 US. First, words from MS Japan President Darren Huston to bring the key idea of this year's point of TechEd; after that, Japan Server Platform Director Mr. Koki Igarashi introduces the "4 promises" in Japanese, to be suitable as a local TechEd event.

After 2 hours keynote session, there was a so-called "Peer-Talk Lunch" event, gathering people to a dinning hall and seperated each Microsoft products in to corners so people can eat their lunch also have chances to talk to pros from Microsoft Japan or peers. This is same as big dinning hall style at TechEd USA, people eat together to have chance to communitcate. In Japan, this kind of gethering lunch is only twice, they used food tickets and corporated with restaurants near the conference center to let people have more choices on meals.

After the peer lunch, the break out sessions begin. I joined T6-313 Introduce Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003, T5-320 Introduce to Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals, also T5-303 Introduce to .Net Framework 3.0 today. Well, although it's little bit hard to hear completely in Japanese session contents, I was managed to get the keypoints throughout demos.

The nice things here at TechEd Japan is that they do give out hands-out (session slides print-outs) to people who join a certain session. this is nice for people for re-gathering the ideas after session, also prevent lots of note-taking while listening to the session. Also they do have direct Japanese interpretation with English speaking sessions. this is really amazing, as Japanese do put lots of efforts on localize foreign contents.

TechEd Japan also got BoF sessions this year. today I joined the DotNetDuke BoF session, which is nice to know people who are dedicating localize and customize DNN at Japan. Also, TechEd Japan prepaired special lounge for MCPs and MVPs to let each group of people have an area to sharing / chatting ideas.

And, seems all the world's local TechEd events are all the same, There Are Food Everywhere!!!

Today's pic I took is here.

I have to say that Japanese is working too hard!!! been here for more than 2 and half months, everyday working from 10AM to 10PM, occasionally have to work at weekend, annual salary, so no overworking fee. this should represent most of small/medium IT companies at Tokyo!

Because now my main job is working on Java programming, and too busy, it's been some time that not able to update the latest Microsoft releated technology news. I am taking one week off from working start from next week, to join TechEd 2006 here at Tokyo (Yokomaha), taking some rest, also update some new stuffs for later working.

This should not be a news, CommunityServer released 2.1 at 8/9, also got source code release (SDK) at 8/11 . wish I'll have some time at next week to upgrade my blog directly to this version.

Maybe I should find a job at Tokyo that's mainly on .Net solution development, instead of Java development...

crosspost from http://rextang.net/blogs/work/

It's nice to have VMWare Player for free, to be able to install on any pc for virtualization. VMWare Server 1.0 is also free but can only run on server platform instead of windows xp. For a corp development environment that can only use corp licensed software, VMWare Player and VMWare Server become a perfect choice for dev env virtualization. it's free, so it's legal to use inside a company. nice marketing idea...

Although VMWare Player is free, it's functions are limited and not much like VMWare workstation (that lovely traversable multi-snapshot). basically, it's really just a player to play a vmware disk image. although VMWare player is lack of VM settings GUI, we can actually tune the VM settings by editing it's configuration .vmx file.

Joe 'Zonker' Brockmeier on NewsForge wrote a nice article about hacking VMWare Player .vmx files to add devices / disks by oneself. tips are:

Download pre-made vm image from vmware appliances site to get ready-to-use VMs as samples

Create own VMWare vmdk disk image by using Qemu tool

Sample .vmx template to create new VMs by just using text editor

The sample .vmx template is like this (from NewsForge article):

config.version = "8"
virtualHW.version = "4"
memsize = "256"
ide0:0.present = "TRUE"
ide0:0.fileName = "newvm.vmdk"
ide1:0.present = "TRUE"
ide1:0.fileName = "/path/to/iso"
ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-image"
floppy0.fileName = "/dev/fd0"
ethernet0.present = "TRUE"
usb.present = "TRUE"
sound.present = "TRUE"
sound.virtualDev = "es1371"
displayuName = "Test Machine"
guestOS = "otherlinux"

scsi0:0.redo = ""
ethernet0.addressType = "generated"

displayName = "DisplayName"

checkpoint.vmState = "test.vmss"

ide0:0.redo = ""

Check Joe's article for more information about editing the config file of VMWare Player.

Basically, VMWare player had all the basic VM functions provided by VMWare Workstation, so I suppose all the hardware virtualization devices are able to add (multiple) in VMWare player.

By the way, Microsoft Virtual PC is also free now. Virtual Server 2005 is also free to use on Windows 2003 Datacenter Edition.

[--- Update ---]

Another Tip: As VMWare Player will not allow one to switch cd-rom images when the VM is running, like what VMWare workstation can do, it's better to set VM's ide1 to auto-detect host machine's cd-rom drive, no matter it's a real cd-rom drive or a virtual cd-rom drive created by software like Daemon Tools (free!), thus when installing software that needs to switch disks or iso images, one can use host's drive to switch, just like what VMWare workstation simulated for users.

[--- Update ---]

Well, I've been busy on adopting my new working environment and job content in Tokyo, thus recently I seldom wrote new things, sorry for that.

The good news is, I've got contacted with Microsoft MVP Lead of Japan (thanks to Taiwan MVP Lead!), and have the chance to join the TechEd 2006 Yokomaha held at 8/25 ~ 9/1 here around Tokyo. it should be a nice event to join to meet new friends who love technologies and developing new things here in Japan. Wish I can get days off from work to join, ha.

Well, my new work recently is all JAVA!!! what can I say... the real developer should cross the language boundaries and approach the real truth of creativity! although, my Japanese is not in business level yet so I have to talk to my boss and clients in not-so-good Japanese as well as talk to my machines and servers with not-so-good Java programming skills... so I've be in a tough time , and that's one of the reasons I seldom write blogs recently.

Well, it's tough though, but I am finding my paces now, to enjoy busy works, and enjoy this Tokyo big city. so I'll try to get back my frequency of updating here and , as recently my blog sites had been comment spammed very bad, I think my first homework should be redesign and upgrade my blog sites to CommunityServer 2.0 .

Spammers, come on! get a life!

crosspost from http://rextang.net/blogs/work/

As day 1 and day 4 serve as travelling day, the actual sessions started at day 2. I've borrowed pics from HK MVP Ken Lin's blog post to have those pics I didn't get for this blog post.

Today is the first day of sessions about Windows Vista, we've got Eddy, the event owner for us for the opening and coordination (pic from Ken).

then we had GM of APAC Windows Client, Kenneth Ludin to have a talk of business view of Windows Vista (pic from Ken).

later we got Asia MVP and Community RD Cally Ko introducing MVP program for us.

after Cally we officially started training sessions. first got Tjeerd Hoek, the director of user experience design dept., to explain to us how and why the UI had been re-designed at Windows Vista (pic from Ken).

After lunch, got Michel Gambier, APAC GM of Information Worker dept., to get a brief introduction of Office 2007 beta 2. well, it's impressive, but seems just in a demo fashion. not have a chance to try it on. must get the bits myself I guess.

the next session we got Tariq Sharif, Lead Program Manager of IE, to give us a little bit technical view of Internet Explorer 7.

and today's sessions ended up with a Windows Client Community Roundtable with Nick White and Aaron Coldiron as the hosts.

that's basically all about today's sessions. something impressive to me, as a developer and counted as half IT Pro guy, is Tjeerd's UI design explainations, and Tariq's Internet Explorer 7 session about new features added to IE 7 and how it will help developers to develop more rich functional web applications.

Some timelines, according to the other attendee MVP Jabez Gan from Malaysia,

IE7 Beta 3 will be released this summer 06

IE7 RTM will be released by December 06.

IE8 will better support networking and re-rendering

IE will be released in a yearly basis

After today's session we got a group dinner together to have more understanding of each others. the weather was nice, food was delicious, and most of all, it's really a great pleasure to see MVPs of different places around Asia (pics from Ken).

after the dinner, I went out to meet my Singapore friend known 6 years ago and later just hanging out with her and Ken Lin, and TW MVPs to the clubs of Singapore. something is worth to mention here in case someone may go to Singapore to have some fun. 5 years ago when I was working here, there is a street named "Moham Soutern Street" that is full of clubs all the steet and was so crowded every weekend. every club was all long queue and had to wait a long time just to get into the room and have a drink. but 5 years later, things changed a lot. this steet has few people even at the weekend time, not hot like before.

I was told by my friend that recently there was just a new open big disco pub call MOS (Ministry of Sound) that is gaining attentions of local people as well as tourists. As Taiwan also got a MOS disco at Taipei, we decided not to go there tonight and finally went to another hot disco here called Zouk. well, this is another important mission to finish during this trip, to see old friends and meet up!

It's been a busy first day sessions and schedule to meet people, I ended up back to hotel at midnight and go sleep soon for tomorrow's sessions.

crosspost from http://rextang.net/blogs/work/

Took some time in hotel room of Windows Vista Lab helding at Singapore to wait for the stop of afternoon thundershower, I did a install of the beta 2 version of Windows Vista Ultimate Beta (build 5384) on VMWare Workstation 5.5.1 build 19175.

Some things did arranged and changed after build 5381. Thanks for the reminder of MVP Kelvin Wu, things need to be brought back by manual settings now.

First of all, Sidebar is gone. well, it's not gone, but now default not start when windows start. People will have to manually open sidebar.exe file to bring it back. the sidebar.exe file is located at "C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe" , needs a cmd.exe to execute it.

Second, when people trying to run the well-known Run command on start menu, it's also gone. by default Vista beta 2 is not enable the Run feature, should be easy understood as that now Vista OS feature designers don't want normal people to use Run command in case they run some improper programs easily. To re-open the Run command in start menu, go to desktop properties dialog page, re-check up the "Run command" to let it show, as shown in above picture. after letting "Run command" back, run the sidebar.exe, and remember also to set sidebar properties to let it run when Windows starts.

Thrid, Clock gadget now have multiple skins to choose. not bad the visual effect!

for IT aspects, Windows Vista builds initial install should cost disk size around 9GB. but as time goes by (about 2 days without turning this Vista copy off, the total disk space usage will increase to about 12GB. it's the problem of paging file. it just kept growing by appending more memory swap bits on the hard disk and delete the front end bytes of paging file on the disk before the whole disk size exceeds pre-set size (scenario working at VMWare Workstation 5.5.1). to try to ease this. it's recommanded to take a snapshot, which is one of the lovely functions provided by VMWare, to establish the back starting point once the disk is growing too large.

The second way for solving above problem is to limit hard disk size for Vista around 12 GB and no more. when Vista determined that it is running out the total disk space, if should clear those deleted sectors resided inside the virtual harddisk and hopefully becoming a rounded-queue-like page swap file to prevent the space grow.

It's all I found and reminded by other MVP today. let's see what will also be mentioned tomorrow on the training sessions.

Look at Technorati site for now, Microsoft tag got many posts about the avalibilities of Windows Vista Beta 2 (Build 5384), Windows Server Longhorn Beta 2 (build 5384), as well as Office System 2007 Beta 2, all are available for download now via MSDN download.

Office System 2007 Beta 2 contains 3 DVDs, one is the program disk (Word, Excel, etc), another is Office Project Server 2007, and the last is Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Windows Server Longhorn and Windows Vista Beta 2 both got 1 DVD to download, available both in x86 and x64 versions.

According to eWeek's report, they've already tested both Vista and Longhorn server beta 2 and having their report here and here, also got pics here and here. I am still waiting my download manager to finish the download. News site always run faster for the reports...

Today is also the start of 2006 WinHEC at Seattle (official press release here), according to Robert Scoble, News.com got some fresh reports from there, including videos.

As Vista do consuming high performance 3D video cards, it's easy to understand why Microsoft chooses to unleash beta 2 at this date. and I am sure that year 2007 will be a very busy year both on software and IT hardware industries. Who can have this kind of power to move the whole trend of IT industry around the globe, it's still Microsoft who is able to do so...

I am paticular interesting in server OS so I might also keep an eye on the progress of Longhorn Server...

crosspost from http://rextang.net/blogs/work/

As I just installed Windows Vista CTP Build 5365, soon found that there is a newer version (build 5381) that's available, so I also had a install of Vista build 5381 today, still installing on VMWare Workstation 5.5.1 build 19175. The installation process was just as smooth as like what I've done in installing 5365, simple and fast this time.

Comparing the differences of those 2 builds, one obvious thing is that the sidebar is transparent to background wallpaper now. which was told by my friend Clay Chang (glad that he is also now doing his blog posts...). I also have a try to the new Windows Media Player 11, since the sound card emulation is working. well, it's nice to see the versions are evolving, although the functions seem like the same by just looking the surface.

Couple weeks ago rumors said that this build 5381 would be the version of Vista Beta 2, although not confirmed by official Microsoft, but I did heard about that Vista beta 2 is out for download, just right before the Vista Lab at Singapore 2 days later.

anyway, I'll just test Vista features on my VMWare virtual machine, not going to install in a physical partition and am going to see whole functioning Vista beta 2 build at Singapore Vista Lab ( or if I am able to finish my download of beta 2 today I'll also do a VMWare VM install of beta 2).

Flying to Singapore soon, will update once I got there.

Finally Mess.be released the patch for Windows Live Messenger beta (a.k.a. MSN Messenger 8.0). the things I always like form Mess.be patch is the ability of multi-login of MSN Messenger in the same windows session since I did use 3 msn accounts at the same time. Mess.be guys now called multi-login feature as "polygamy", so in case you can't find the info via Google search, try that keyword to find out.

For MSN Messenger 8.0.0689 downloads, find it in Traditional Chinese version here, English version here, as well as Japanese version here.
