After some time of beta, this week ISA/TMG Team make available SP1 for ISA Server 2006.

As Forefront (ISA Server) MVP I recommend you to backup your ISA configuration, download and install this SP.

! MVP Summit 2008 - Seattle & Redmond - WA - USA

Hi all,

Last week was the MVP Global Summit, edition 2008, at Seattle & Redmond (Microsoft Campus) - WA - USA. Participate in this exclusive event is one of benefits to be a MVP.

This year we had more breakout sessions with the product team and my case much better than 2007 was. I saw sessions w/ Forefront Client Security, Forefront Server, ISA/TMG/IAG/UAC and Stirling. Almost all content is under NDA and I cannot tell you what I see, but "Stirling" is already available to download as a beta and you can try it (see my old post about it).

About the keynotes, we had Ray Ozzie and Steve Ballmer! Steve was incredible!!!

! New ISA Server - Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG)

As Forefront MVP I already know about it, but now (April 9th) it's public.

"... the Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG), a comprehensive network protection solution. Forefront TMG is the future version of the Microsoft Internet Security & Acceleration Server (ISA Server) and will extend the capabilities of ISA Server with new features and security technologies. I know many of you have loved and embraced the ISA Server name and brand for a long time – but it is time for new naming, new logos, blogs, books and of course new technology directions.

Forefront TMG will be available as both a standalone solution but also part of new integrated suites to be released in the future such as the Microsoft Windows Essential Business Server, the recently announced server solution designed for mid-sized companies due out later this year as well as the Forefront “Stirling” suite announced today, a unified protection solution that combines Forefront client, server, and edge security solutions with a single management and policy layer. A “first look” preview of Stirling Beta 1 was shown at RSA this week. It is also available for download.

Why am I so excited about this announcement? To begin, it is the first version of ISA Server that will fully support the Windows Vista and Server 2008 platforms. It also will natively support the 64-bit Windows Server platform which provides significant scalability and security capabilities to the Threat Management Gateway. The three other main areas of enhancement we are announcing today are the following:

1. Multiple Threat Protection: We will enable numerous new protection technologies and capabilities, including integration of the Microsoft Anti-Virus Engine for protection against Internet-based malware and other threats. As part of Stirling, Forefront TMG will also include the “Dynamic Response” functionality to enable shared intelligence and response. This is a major step forward in how our customers rely upon the Microsoft gateway for protection and access to the Internet.

2. Simplified Management: Forefront TMG will include new set-up wizards, improved management interface and enhanced reporting. As part of the Stirling suite, Forefront TMG will be part of the Stirling central visibility dashboard and policy control.

3. Secure Connectivity: Forefront TMG will build on current ISA Server capability around secure Internet access and other connectivity features.

"The ISA Server Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) is a diagnostic tool that automatically performs specific tests on configuration data collected on the local ISA Server computer from the ISA Server hierarchy of administration COM objects, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes, the system registry, files on disk, and the Domain Name System (DNS) settings.

The resulting report details critical configuration issues, potential problems, and information about the local computer. By following the recommendations of the tool, administrators can achieve greater performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime.
The ISA Server Best Practices Analyzer is supplied with two supplemental tools.

Yesterday Set/11, Microsoft announced the ISA Server 2006 Supportability Update package contains some fixes and new features that was included on SP3 for ISA 2004, like:

• Improvements to the ISA Server Management console. These improvements include a new Troubleshooting node.

• Improved log viewing functionality.

• Additional log filter functionality.

• Diagnostic logging. Over 200 new diagnostic logging events are provided.

• Integration with Microsoft ISA Server Best Practices Analyzer Tool.

As MVP, I already installed the 'beta version' and works very well, this final version you can install in all ISA Server computers (Standard and Enterprise).

"Skype is a good example of how defying open standards can result in a better product. H.323, the first attempt at VoIP standard, failed miserably. SIP stands much better chance but there are numerous issues with SIP operator interconnections and crossing organisational perimeter. Skype doesn't have any of these issues: it doesn't interconnect with third parties, using PSTN as the only interface available; and it supports HTTP proxy for connectivity, effectively eliminating difficulties sending voice/video traffic to external parties. ... "

! Microsoft Pushes More Into Forefront

"Microsoft plans to sink more money into Forefront, its comprehensive suite of tools for desktop, server and remote security, and its security partners stand to benefit -- perhaps substantially.

At its Worldwide Partner Conference in Denver Wednesday, Microsoft announced a number of enhancements to it Security Software Advisor (SSA) program. SSAs are Microsoft Partners that help sell and implement Microsoft security products like ISA Server, Forefront Security for Exchange Server, Forefront Security for SharePoint, Forefront Security Suite and so on. In all, there are currently 10 security products under the Forefront umbrella. SSAs earn up to 30 percent of the estimated retail price of any Forefront products they sell.

Microsoft stated in a press release that it has more than 4,000 SSAs, and that success has led it to boost its investment "in sales, marketing, training and other support for its security business" by $50 million.

It is also making some changes to the program specializations. The first is that the "Secure Management" specialization is going away; it's being merged into the "Secure Infrastructure" specialization. A new specialization has also been created, "Identity and Secure Access." Microsoft said that it is to reflect the fact that identity management and its relationship to secure network access is a specialized skill set. ... "

New checks - There are now 218 rules, and more than 900 settings are displayed.

! ISA Firewall Client on 'Longhorn' | Windows Server 2008

Hi,

Last week I saw a scene and for this moment we have only a 'workaround'.

If you need to use internet from LH (Longhorn) | 'Windows Server 2008' through ISA Server the only way is configuring proxy on IE and/or using gateway on network interface.

The version avaliable to download of Firewall Client isn't supported on LH Server but the ISA Team is already working in the next beta version.
