! Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) Beta is available
Fri, Nov 30 2007 8:53

Hi,

"This is something that of you have been waiting for a while now! Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) is essentially the WS08 version of the "Admin Pack". RSAT allows you to install many of the WS08 management tools on a Vista SP1 computer so you can remotely manage WS08 servers (full servers and server core). Some of the tools included in RSAT can also be used to manage WS03 servers as well. "

Microsoft® Remote Server Administration Tools enables IT administrators to remotely manage roles and features in Windows Server® 2008 from a computer running Windows Vista with Service Pack 1. It includes support for remote management of computers running a Server Core or Full Server installation of Windows Server 2008. This feature has been requested by customers as a replacement for the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack.

To test the Remote Server Administration Tools Beta and obtain customer feedback, Microsoft offers a Feature Focus program for this update, starting November 28, 2007 on the Microsoft Connect site. By participating in the program, you have the opportunity to try the new Remote Server Administration Tools, and provide feedback directly to the product team. The download is available as part of the Windows Beta program at http://connect.microsoft.com/windows/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=9561.

! Get Ready for Exchange Server 2007 SP1
Thu, Nov 29 2007 7:53

Hi,

From Mitch Irsfeld
Editor, TechNet Flash

"On November 30, you will be able to download Exchange Server 2007 with Service Pack 1. The list of new features in SP1 is long, including new deployment options, new features and improvements for each server role, improved integration with other applications, and even a new, third type of continuous replication. There are also general updates to almost all of the high availability topics for SP1, as well as significant updates in other content areas, such as those related to the Mailbox, Client Access, Hub Transport and Edge Transport, and the Unified Messaging server roles. You can find documentation on the new features by browsing or searching the Exchange Server TechCenter Library. If you're in evaluation mode, you can now download the Exchange Server 2007 with Service Pack 1 trial software and see how secure, anywhere access can enhance operational efficiency.
And once you've deployed Exchange Server 2007 Edge Transport servers to control spam and other unwanted e-mail messages, you'll want to implement logging and tracing and configure Edge Transport agents to perform the tasks you need. Check out the November issue of TechNet Magazine to see how to analyze Edge Transport agents in action by using the standard agent logging and tracing features of Exchange Server 2007. "

    ! Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V: A Hypervisor-Based Virtualization Solution
    Thu, Nov 22 2007 12:21

Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V is designed to provide a reliable virtualization environment and integrated management solution that enables customers to virtualize their infrastructure and reduce costs. A great value, it will be available as a feature of Windows Server 2008 and will easily plug into your IT infrastructure, letting you take advantage of existing management tools and skill-sets with broad support from Microsoft and our partners.

With virtualization built into the operating system and with simpler, more flexible licensing policies, it's easier than ever to take advantage of all the benefits and cost savings of virtualization. Windows Server 2008 will provide the flexibility to create an agile and dynamic data center to meet your changing business needs. Four core scenarios are enabled by Hyper-V: server consolidation, business continuity, test and development, and dynamic data center. Combined with Microsoft System Center, this provides a complete and integrated server management solution that works with virtual machines and physical servers and helps extend the capabilities of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V.
    Key Hyper-V capabilities include:

    1. New and improved architecture: New 64-bit microkernelized hypervisor architecture enables Windows Server virtualization to provide a broad array of device support and improved performance and security.
    2. Broad operating system support: Broad support for simultaneously running different types of operating systems including 32-bit and 64-bit systems across different server environments, such as Windows, Linux, and others.
    3. SMP support: Support up to four symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) processors in a virtual machine environment to take full advantage of multithreaded applications in a virtual machine.
    4. Memory support: Support for large memory allocation per virtual machine enables you to virtualize most workloads, making Windows Server virtualization an ideal environment for enterprises and small to medium-size businesses.
    5. New hardware sharing architecture: With the new virtual service provider/virtual service client (VSP/VSC) architecture, Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V provides improved access and utilization of core resources such as disk, networking, video, etc.
    6. Quick migration: Rapidly migrate a running virtual machine from one physical host system to another with minimal downtime, capitalizing on familiar, high-availability capabilities of management tools in Windows Server and System Center.
    7. Scalable: With support for multiple processors and cores at the host level and improved memory access within virtual machines, you can vertically scale your virtualization environment to support a large number of virtual machines within a particular host and continue to take advantage of quick migration for scalability across multiple hosts.
    8. Extensible: Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V standards-based Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) interfaces and application programming interfaces (APIs) enable independent software vendors (ISVs) and developers to quickly build custom tools, utilities, and enhancements for the virtualization environment.

! Microsoft Continues Its Redmond Headquarters Expansion
    Mon, Nov 12 2007 22:07

Company unveils West Campus details and adds 2.4 million square feet to its real estate portfolio.

"The new international headquarters for Microsoft Research, Building 99, opened today. It is the first of seven new buildings on Microsoft Corp.’s West Campus. The company’s Entertainment and Devices Division will occupy four of the seven new buildings, part of the 1.4 million square feet of West Campus currently under construction. Planned for completion in April 2009, West Campus will feature a central campus commons, offering employees convenient amenities such as a post office, a mini-spa, a bookstore and 12 food venues. ...

Microsoft also announced that site planning is currently under way for two new buildings on the former Safeco Corp. headquarters site it acquired in 2006. The company will also begin site planning for the addition of new buildings on the land it acquired from Nintendo of America Inc. earlier this year. Both of these projects are outside the three-year expansion Microsoft began in February 2006. Construction start and end dates for both sites have not yet been set.

Washington state Gov. Chris Gregoire and Redmond Mayor Rosemarie Ives joined Microsoft executives at Building 99.

“The fact is, Microsoft is and continues to be a mainstay for Washington’s economy,” said Gregoire. “Not only does it create and support thousands of high-wage jobs, but it also generates enduring prosperity. It serves as a magnet for other software and high-tech companies in Washington. And many former Microsoft employees have tapped their wealth and know-how to start new business enterprises and charitable foundations.”

Over the next two years, Microsoft will continue plans to dedicate $35 million to significant transportation and infrastructure enhancements in Redmond, including improvements to roads, sewers and an overpass over SR 520. Planned for completion in the fall of 2009, the overpass will connect the east and west sides of campus, allowing for easier traffic flow on campus and in the surrounding communities. ..."

! Case Study - How to Improve Security Policy with NAP
    Sat, Nov 10 2007 11:20

    Hi,

The Forefront team post in your blog, a case study from Microsoft IT (MSIT) about Microsoft Improves Security Policy Compliance with Network Access Protection.

    Brief:

"With 71,000 highly mobile users worldwide, Microsoft wanted a new way to measure and improve its 300,000+ client computers’ compliance with corporate security policies. The company deployed Network Access Protection (NAP), a feature of the Windows Server® 2008 operating system, to improve the security policy compliance of its desktop computers, roaming portable computers, visiting portable computers, and unmanaged home computers. Now Microsoft is increasing compliance with security policies and adding efficiency to its security management process. The company also benefits from the scalability of NAP and the flexibility to deploy it for a variety of access scenarios—including virtual private network connections, Internet Protocol security access, and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol address configurations—with varying levels of implementation."

! WSUS will become optional role for Windows Server 2008 Server Manager
    Tue, Nov 6 2007 9:13

    Technorati Tags: , ,

    Hi,

"In addition to roles and features that are included with Windows Server 2008 by default, Server Manager enables integration of additional roles and features that are available on the Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update Web sites as optional updates to Windows Server 2008.

One role that will be available as an update is Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 (WSUS 3.0 SP1). This update to Server Manager enables full integration of WSUS 3.0 SP1 into Server Manager, allowing installation, configuration, and management of WSUS 3.0 SP1 using the Server Manager console and wizards.

Beta testers can download a server manager update for Windows Server 2008 RC0 to enable this new optional role, for now that is just WSUS. But since MS removed Windows Sharepoint Services as default available rol on WS08 I think this will become an optional role for Server manager too."
