Red Hat Digital Keys Violated by Intruder

Em um artigo recente, Roberto Prado comentou sobre o patrocínio da Microsoft à Apache Foundation. Em sua apresentação na OSCON 2008, no dia 25 de julho, Sam Ramji também falou sobre isto e ainda anunciou outras iniciativas importantes da Microsoft junto à comunidade de código aberto. Dentre elas, está a contribuição de um patch para o ADOdb, uma camada de abstração para a conexão com bases de dados para a linguagem PHP. "Esta é a nossa primeira contribuição de código para a comunidade PHP, mas não será a última", diz Sam, que também falou um pouco mais sobre o OSP, Open Specification Program da Microsoft: "Nós esclarecemos ainda mais nosso OSP, garantindo aos desenvolvedores direitos para a construção de software de qualquer tipo, para qualquer propósito, usando nossa especificação, incluindo software para uso comercial".

O texto não é meu, por isso nem traduzi e coloquei o link para a origem no final, mas vale a pena conferir.

Forget about viruses. I think we went over that already.

Is your system unstable? Who knew. When a system doesn't do anything, it doesn't crash. Oops, there goes NFS. Locked desktop. Oops I changed my IP address. Locked desktop.

Linux protects your computer. What does that even mean? It sounds the same as the first one.

Don't pay $300 for your operating system... but spend 10 weekends setting it up.

Freedom! Yes, free yourselves form the shackles of sanity.

When the system has installed, why would you still need to install stuff? Because the person that creates my OS can't possibly package everything? Duh?

Update all your software with a single click... as long as you only want the selection and the versions that your distro provides. Don't you dare visit upstream websites.

Why copy software illegally if you can get it for free? Why spend hours making free software barely work when you can pay $50 and get on with your life?

Need new software? Don't bother search the web, Linux gets it for you... only if your distro has packaged it. Need software that's actually useful? Don't bother searching the web. It's not there. If it's even remotely useful, then your distro has probably already included it in a sad attempt to match the functionality of other platforms. Need legal dvd playback? playback of DRM'ed files? FAIL.

Powershell Open Source?

Sim, é o PASH!

Usuários avançados do Windows Server já conhecem o Power Shell uma poderosa linguagem de "scripting" (usada para automatizar a execução de processos em lote e seus controles) que, com o Windows 2008, é incorporada como padrão no sistema. O Power Shell, tipicamente chamado de POSH, agora tem uma alternativa em código aberto, o PASH, que mistura os nomes POSH e BASH (típico Shell para os ambientes Linux), é multiplataforma e desenvolvido totalmente com o framework .Net 2.0, podendo ser compilado em qualquer sistema que tenha suporte ao .Net ou ao Mono. Ainda que o primeiro download do projeto tenha sido liberado há mais de duas semana, ele já implementa 50% da funcionalidade nativa do Power Shell e, no site do projeto é possível ver as telas do mesmo rodando em versões do Windows (inclusive CE) e Linux.

Por que não consideram o MacBooks seguro?

Algum tempo atrás ouvimos muito falar que os computadores da Apple eram os mais seguros. Então surgiram algumas vulnerabilidades, o que é coisa normal, pois não há nenhum sistema operacional que nunca tenho possuído nenhuma, nem que seja em uma versão antiga.

Certo, mas parece que agora a coisa foi mais séria. A agência de saúde dos USA proibiu os seus funcionários que usam os Apple MacBooks de armazenarem dados médicos em laptops que não rodem Windows ou Linux.

Aí notamos a falta que faz um sistema de criptografia como o BitLocker, que é aceito pela agência...

Employees who store medical records on laptops must use systems that run either on Microsoft's Windows operating system or Linux.

In the wake of a widely publicized security breach that left thousands of patient records exposed, the federal government's National Institutes of Health is forbidding all employees who use Apple's MacBook laptops from handling sensitive data as of Friday, InformationWeek has learned.

Employees at the health agency who store medical records and other personal information on laptops must use systems that run either on Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s Windows operating system or Linux, according to an agency memo.

Those systems must be equipped with Check Point Software (NSDQ: CHKP)'s Pointsec encryption tool as of April 4, according to an NIH mandate. Systems running Windows Vista can also use Vista's built-in BitLocker disk encryption tool.

NIH imposed the no-MacBooks rule because there is no Apple-compatible version of Pointsec. To date, Check Point has only released a beta version of Pointsec for Macs that's not yet ready for government use.

"Computers that cannot be encrypted by Pointsec at this time (e.g., Macs) are waived from the encryption mandate, but only with the stipulation that they do not contain any PII or sensitive government information," the NIH Office of Research Services said in a memo to NIH staff. PII refers to personally identifiable information.

Tafiti no Codeplex

O aplicativo está disponível no Codeplex sob a licença MS-PL. Utiliza tecnologias Silverlight, ASP.NET Ajax, Windows Live ID e Live Search API. Especificação dos formatos binários do Office

Na última sexta-feira, dia 15 de fevereiro, a Microsoft deu mais um passo em seu compromisso com a abertura de suas especificações a padrões. Ainda que muitos já se valessem de informações espalhadas pela rede de desenvolvedores Microsoft (MSDN), e empresa decidiu por compilar e tornar públicas as especificações dos formatos binários do Office (.doc, .ppt, .xls e outros). Microsoft anuncia novas ações para promover interoperabilidade

A Microsoft vai implantar quatro novos princípios de interoperabilidade para os produtos Windows Vista (incluindo o .NET Framework), Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, Office 2007, Exchange Server 2007 e Office SharePoint Server 2007, além de suas versões futuras. As novas ações são as seguintes:

Permitir conexões abertas
Promover portabilidade de dados
Aumentar o suporte aos padrões da indústria
Promover maior envolvimento com clientes e com indústria, incluindo aí as comunidades dedicadas a código aberto ou sofware livre

Steve Ballmer, CEO e presidente mundial da empresa, declarou que “as medidas representam um importante passo e uma mudança significativa em nossa forma de compartilhar informações sobre nossos produtos e tecnologias”. Ballmer disse que a meta da Microsoft é ampliar a interoperabilidade, além de gerar mais oportunidades e opções para clientes e desenvolvedores de toda a indústria.O Conselho Executivo para a Interoperabilidade (IEC), uma organização composta por CIOs e CTOs de mais de 40 empresas e órgãos governamentais de todo o mundo, vai orientar a Microsoft para que a empresa possa concluir seu objetivo sob os princípios e ações propostos. Informações detalhadas sobre as ações de interoperabilidade e a relação completa das iniciativas da empresa estão no site sobre Interoperabilidade da Microsoft.

Ray Ozzie, principal arquiteto de software da Microsoft, afirmou que a iniciativa reflete a importância que os usuários individuais e empresariais atribuem à facilidade de troca de informações. A heteregenoidade tornou-se uma norma adotada pelas arquiteturas corporativas, por isso, a interoperabilidade entre aplicativos e serviços passou a ser um requisito imprescindível.

Segundo o blog de Scott Guthrie, que desenvolve produtos para a Microsoft, a empresa está em processo de adicionar novas livrarias (incluindo LINQ, WCF e Workflow) à lista. Guthrie escreveu um longo post sobre a novidade e também ensina o caminho das pedras para acessar o código.

Quickoffice 5.0 permite editar arquivos do Office 2007

A partir de agora, usuários do Quickoffice poderão abrir, ver, editar e criar documentos do Word e do Excel 2007 em seus formativos XML nativos diretamente do telefone e sem provocar qualquer problema à integridade dos dados. O anúncio foi feito pela Quickoffice no dia 18/12, quando a empresa informou a chegada ao mercado do Quickoffice Premier 5.0, primeira aplicação que permite ver e editar arquivos do Office 2007 em devices com Symbian S60.

Linux Losing Market Share to Windows Server
By Peter Galli October 25, 2007 Experts say that migrations from Unix to Linux have slowed down because all the low-hanging fruit has now been picked.

Linux growth in the U.S. x86 server market has, over the past six quarters, started to falter and reverse its positive course relative to Windows Server and the market as a whole.

The annual rate at which Linux is growing in the x86 server space has fallen from around 53 percent in 2003, when Windows Server growth was in the mid-20 percent range, to a negative 4 percent growth in calendar year 2006, IDC Quarterly Server Tracker figures show.

Over the same time period, Windows has continued to report positive annual growth, outpacing the total growth rate in the x86 market by more than 4 percent in 2006, indicating that Linux has actually lost market share to Windows Server over this time.

The same holds true for worldwide Linux x86 server shipments, which dropped from the huge annual growth rate of about 45 percent is 2003 to growth of less than 10 percent in 2006, the IDC figures show.

One of the biggest reasons for this is that the migrations from Unix to Linux have slowed down markedly.

"We have seen the rate of migration from Unix slow over the past few quarters," IDC analyst Matt Eastwood told eWEEK. "In my view this is because much of the low-hanging fruit has been moved and the applications that remain on Unix are stickier because they are seen as business critical and more political candidates for migration overall."

IDC analyst Al Gillen pointed out that the number of servers shipped does not perfectly equal the number of operating systems in the market. This is particularly the case with Linux where a substantial portion of the overall market opportunity comes from deployments aboard recycled servers, PCs and workstations deployed as servers, and Linux deployed as a guest operating system.

"This does not contradict any trending taking place on server hardware," Gillen said.

He added: "But we do need to remember that the Linux software ecosystem does not track exactly the same as does x86 hardware shipments."

Margaret Lewis, the director of commercial solutions for AMD in Austin, Texas, has also noticed the slowdown in Linux growth over the past few quarters.

In 2000, Windows comprised about half of the server operating system market, followed by Unix and Netware at about 17 percent each and Linux reaching towards 10 percent, she said, noting that today Windows owns about 70 percent, Linux about 20 percent, with Unix below 10 percent and Netware barely registering.

"Looking at these large operating system market swings, you could draw the conclusion that Linux has gotten the 'low-hanging fruit' in terms of migration," Lewis said.

"Without the larger pool of Unix and NetWare users who are ripe for migration, there is not quite the level of fuel. You could assume that Linux is now ready to settle down to a more regular growth curve representative of a more mature technology."

The fact that Windows has maintained a steady growth rate over this same time frame could be the result of companies expanding their Windows-based IT infrastructure to meet the demands of users who always want to be online, she said.

"Windows-based Web hosting sites are experiencing strong growth, the Exchange infrastructure is expanding to offer unified messaging and many small businesses are moving to a real server infrastructure for basic infrastructure instead of a network of desktops," Lewis said.

Bill Hilf, general manager of Windows Server marketing and platform strategy at Microsoft in Redmond, Wash., has also noticed these trends, and says that increased customer adoption of Windows Server 2003 in a broad range of enterprise scenarios is driving significant growth of that business.

"I spend a lot of time talking with both Linux and Windows customers and partners, and the feedback that I hear is that, in volume, Linux is primarily deployed in two workloads—high-performance computing and as Web servers," Hilf told eWEEK.

"It appears that Linux server growth is moderating considerably and, while it's certainly still a player, it's not being considered across the broad range of workloads that Windows Server is, from ERP to CRM to messaging and collaboration to core infrastructure like file and print," he said.
