Q: Where can I obtain Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 (SBS 2003 R2)?
A: SBS 2003 R2 will be available in all channels (OEM, Open, Retail, System Builder) once it becomes generally available. Each channel has slightly different lead times and delays; contact your channel partner for details. Most channels will continue to carry SBS 2003 for some time after the SBS 2003 R2 launch.
Q: How long will SBS 2003 remain on the market once SBS 2003 R2 is released?
A: Most resellers or channel partners continue to carry stock keeping units (SKUs) for earlier software versions. Microsoft typically removes older versions of the SKUs within a year after the new version launch. SBS 2003 R2 will follow these normal policies. Note that these policies differ by channel (OEM, Open, Retail, System Builder), so check with your software vendor for additional information.
Q. What about customers who recently purchased SBS 2003—do I have to worry about software returns?
A. As part of the product release, Microsoft has announced the Technology Upgrade Program specifically for SBS 2003 R2. A: SBS 2003 R2 will be recommended to all customers at the time of its availability. Since SBS 2003 R2 will replace SBS 2003 with SP1, it will be of greatest interest to customers purchasing a server for the first time. Because SBS 2003 R2 offers automated patch and update management for desktops and servers, many SBS 2003 customers will want to upgrade to reduce hands-on management time and lower their administration costs.
