My saviour :-) I had opened a few pics to edit on a pc elsewhere on my home network, and when on my office network it seemed like someone had poured treacle into the gubbins if I wanted to use Picture manager. Sure enough, the cag file contained MRU entries for the home network locations that don't exist on the office network.

Why don't M$ tell people about this? Their KB sucks.

I edited the OIScatalog.cag file and saved it but the MRU links to the network folder kept reappearing in the .cag file. Strange... I deleted the OIScatalog.cag file and when the new .cag file was created by the program, again it contained MRU links to the network folder. Solution found was to delete files existing in the thumbnail folder. After that the network MRU links never appeared again and Picture Manager opening is very fast.

Once can find "OIScatalog.cag" in C:\Documents and Settings\user-name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\OIS folder under Windows XP Professional.

Delete all "<mru path>" tags from the file and Picture Manager just files like anything..!!

But unfortunate thing is that everytime, you use a network path and disconnect the machine from the network, you have to edit the above file.

Every time I hear any news about the next version of Office, I do a search for office integration with .NET .. to get that “wow, something new feeling about Office”.. it has been a long time since Office 95 for NT and cross app VBA. Even OpenOffice has Python & Java in addition to VB.

As a professional developer working in the front-office of an Investment Bank it is woeful .NET has not been added.. VSTO does not count because DLL deployments with COM interop have to be packaged tested and deployed using a process designed for the MDAC version disaster.
