Word 2003 xslt file and line breaks in XML data file not working.

Hello

I have an XML data file and some of the elements have line breaks in them.

I have a Word 2003 xml document referencing a schema file based on the above XML data file. I save the Word xml file and then convert it to an xslt file with wml2xslt. If I then look at the xml data file using the xslt file the elements with the line breaks are shown without line breaks.

If I view the xml data file with IE then I can see the line breaks in the elements but they are removed by Word.

Can anyone suggest how to get Word to 'see' the line breaks and include them in the final output from the xslt file?

Hi Paul,

I was having the exact same problem last week, and I (sort of) solved it by editing the xsl file that wml2xslt creates.

Add these namespaces to the .xsl:

xmlns:msxsl="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xslt"
xmlns:user="urn:my-scripts"

Then add the following script and template to your .xsl:

NOTE: i have used <w:p /> to write the new line - where w is the tag prefix of the "http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/word/2003/wordml" namespace.

Then call the replaceNewLines template on any text that you need to replace.

So instead of using
<xsl:value-of select="." />

use
            <xsl:call-template name="replaceNewLines">
              <xsl:with-param name ="value" select="." />
            </xsl:call-template>

Now for any node that might contain text with '\n' characters they will be replaced with <w:p /> nodes and will be new lines in the Word output.

This is probably a long winded approach, but it works for me!

On second thoughts, you will want to use the actual character code for the new line character (
)- I was just using a text placeholder.

It's even easier - I didn't realise that I didn't have to write my own script to perform those functions. Just use this template instead:

XML has certainly not been developed as an replacement for data bases. XML is rather an attempt to provide the (important) features of SGML but make it easier to build tools like parsers. So if you had used SGML before you could look at XML to replace that. For instance the W3C has replaced the SGML based HTML 4 with the XML based XHTML 1.0. As for the usage of XML by now that depends on what you want to achieve, there are various document formats like XHTML for instance, or MathML (a markup language to markup complex mathematical BLOCKED EXPRESSION, or SVG (a markup language to describe animatable vector graphics). Newer browsers build can render such documents and even composed documents, for instance Mozilla 1.0 and later and Firefox 1.0 can render mixed XHTML and MathML documents, Opera 8 can render mixed XHTML and SVG documents, and Firefox 1.5 will be able to render mixed XHTML, MathML, and SVG documents.

And XML based formats are used to exchange data between applications, for instance web services exchange messages in SOAP format so if you already have a data base and want to provide clients access then you could provide a web service that accesses the data base the way you are used to (e.g. with SQL) but exposes the data to any client understanding SOAP.

When I save a word document as XML, it seems that o:DocumentProperties/o:Pages always comes out as 1. I have tried doing "update fields" and saving in page layout mode to no avail.

Is this property broken? any other way to determine the number of pages by looking at the XML?

Is it possible to have a partially XML word document? What I mean is, I already have a WORD doc that we use as a status report. Now what I need to do is, add a table to this WORD doc which will later be used to report off of. I would like this table to be in XML so I can use to extract data later.

Whether you have saved a document in the binary format or the XML format, you can still work with it via XML in the OM. So, you can have a .dot that a user loads and then use the Word OM to insert new XML at a certain place. I strongly recommend you consider using an XML schema behind your .dot/.doc file so that it is very easy to find the location where you want to add the arbitrary XML. If you have not done so, download the Word XML SDK.

Cannot install MSXML 4 from MSI file

I keep getting this error:

Error 1402: Could not open key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0\CLSID.

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

when I try to install MSXML 4 from the MSI file.

I have local admin priviledged on my account and I've tried with the local admin count, disabled the AV, etc, but the same error continually occurs. The only references I've been able tofind are related to Office 2000, or Windows 9x. I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2 with Office 2003.

First of all, I would like to confirm my understanding of your issue.

From your description, I understand that an error which says key cannot be opened when trying to install MSXML 4. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

This is quite wired. It seems that there might be some corruption in the registry. You can try to check the permission of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes key to see if you have the permission to read and full control. If that still doesn't work, you can also try the following.

1. Log in with the built in Administrator account to check if your local admin account can access the key.

2. If not, log on with an account that has explicit permission to the key and change the permissions to include full control for the Administrators local group. Push these changes down to the child keys and subkeys.

3. Have the Administrators local group take ownership of the keys.

4. Log off and log back on with my admin account.

5. Install MSXML again.

Solution!

The entire key HKLM\Software\Classes needed the SYSTEM account with full control permissions. Once this was changed, the install completed without issue.

Dimitre, will a similar XSLT allow me to make schedules for sports teams ? (Team 1 vs Team 2, etc) I've been trying to figure out how to do this and only produce combos that haven't been used before, eg Team

1 vs Team 3 the following week, etc.

I've found a solution thanks to Michael Kay at another forum. He stated "The html output method only serializes HTML correctly in the case of elements in the null namespace. If you put elements in a different namespace, for example, the XHTML namespace, then they are serialized as XML. This is why you are getting the <a name="x"/> form of output.

As mentioned earlier, if you're generating html you shouldn't put it in the XHTML namespace."

So I removed the XHTML namespace attribute from the html tag (<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">), and it now works great. Thanks for your help, and I hope that you have a great weekend.

converting emf to bindata

Hi,

I'm trying to insert an emf into wordml. Problem is when I insert 10 emf files all around 2-3 MB each my word file gets really large, approx 70 MB. When I open the file in word it takes about 1-2 mins. but the images looks fine and the Word file shrinks down to about 3 MB. Currently I am inserting the emf files by encoding base64 and putting in an WordML <pict> tag. This seems to works well with jpg and gif because they are small in size. I don't want to open word, how does word compress the emf file in the <bindata> tag?

using Office 2003.

It's a zlib compressed emf file. You can ungzip an emz into an emf on the command line. To convert back, just gzip the .emf file.

Hello:

I need to parse some large XML files, and save the data in an Access DB. I was using MSXML 2 and ASP, but it turns out to be extremely slow when then XML documents are like 10 mb in size. It's taking over an hour to parse such sizes!?

I don't really need to use ASP or a web server at all because I am parsing all in my own computer. Is there any executable that can do this parsing faster than the way I was doing it?

I can't believe that my ISP (read: SYMPATICO.CA), which is the biggest communications monopoly in Canada, forces me half the time to resort to google to post on usenet. They suck, they just suck, and they'll keep on sucking forever. Anyway ... back to my XML issue....

I've installed .net, and searched documentation that would explain the use of XmlTextReader. But I guess I cannot just skip the ABC of ASP.Net Most of the scripts are in C , and sometimes, there's no indication of what scripting language is used. Can someone post an equivalent of the code below using in ASP.NET and the XmlTextReader? I am really stuck, and I don't have the time, the energy and the brains to re-invent the wheel.

I am not an expert on techniques of parsing, but if performance were a problem for me, I would try and use as much explicit node naming as possible...for instance I would maybe recode the above statement to be something like this:

objXMLDoc.selectNodes("rootNode/childNode/node_name")

I know if _I_ was the parser, I would be able to find those nodes in a 10mb structure quicker using the second technique rather than using the first.

I observe a strange problem with the MSXML object. In my code I am using "MSXML2.DomDocument" to create a new object of xml. What I understand is that this would hook to the latest version of the XML available. I have both msxml3 and 4 so I was expecting to that createobject would hook to the version 4. I observe that this is generally correct but I found an exception in Windows 2003 server. Where it createobject hooked to an older version.

I am not sure if my above assumption is correct.

I dont want to hook my code to any specific version of XML like by creating an object of "MSXML2.DomDocument.4.0". What is the MicroSoft guide line in this regards.

No, that is wrong, versions like MSXML 4 or later can only be instantiated by using a version specific indentifier e.g.

Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0 for MSXML 4,

Msxml2.DOMDocument.5.0 for MSXML 5

What I'm attempting to do may seem strange, but I need your help nonetheless.

In my external xml file, I have a node that could contain some html markup along with other data. The html markup in question is
tags. There's could be quite a few of 'em in each node. What I'd like to do is this:

1. Search the desired node for any occurence(s) of
tags

2. If there any are, count the total number of
tags found

3. For each odd-numbered
tag, change it to a

tag

4. For each even-numbered
tag, change it to a

tag

This may be a trivial thing to some of you pros out there, but its pretty difficult for an xsl newbie like me.

I guess the real question is can such a thing be done in xsl? If so, any ideas?

Actually, looking at it as 'tags' and adding opening and closing tags is the wrong way to approach this problem - it makes for a lot of difficulties. I'm not saying the code below is especially efficient but it does work without trying to generate mismatched tag pairs :

Let's say I have an XML document which goes like this :

This is some
text which I wish to segment into

paragraphs, such that
each paragraph ends up on a separate line. The only realistic way to test this
is to make sure <br /> tags are left as-is and <p> tags are shown with say, a CSS border

This is a native paragraph inside the second ht element

but with a line break included in it
and a second one for good measure

Save it as an XML file. Then if you save the template which follows as testlinebreak.xsl it should be applied automatically to the XML in your browser :

Well to use version 2.0 you need to use a processor that supports it, at the moment the main one is Saxon (version 8+ I believe) which is written in Java but which also has a port to .net.

Secondly you need to declare version="2.0" on the stylesheet element.

If you are not able to do that then you can write your own recursive template or use one from the fxslt library at http://fxsl.sourceforge.net/
