The Microsoft Office Newsletter tells from where to download some new smart art templates. I did that, and put them in a folder of my choosing, as they did not suggest an Office folder. The instructions are to open Word 2007, click insert - smart art - and choose a gallery. Well, surprise, surprise, they aren't showing up in any gallery. How do I tell Word 2007 where to look for the new templates? Or, to where should I move them to have them show up?

The download page should have placed a .glox file in the hidden folder C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\SmartArt Graphics. If you downloaded it to somewhere else, copy or move it there.

You may have to search through the SmartArt gallery for the new template. The template itself tells Word which category to put it in, but the web page doesn't give you any hint of where to find it. For example, the Picture Organization Chart template goes into the Hierarchy group, while the Tabbed Arc template goes rather arbitrarily into the Relationship group. (If you know the trick of changing the extension from .glox to .zip and opening the archive, you can find the category in the \diagrams\layoutHeader1.xml file.)

Thank you, Jay. I tried to follow that path, and was blocked at Documents and Settings. Even though I ran as administrator, it would not let me open that file. Do you know how to do that?

Anyway, I do have access to the stuff under <My Name>, including and Application data. So, I followed it down to the SmartArt Graphics folder, found it was empty, and pasted in the new .glox files. Sure enough, I was able to find two of the new graphic thingies, whatever it is. There were, of course, all those that come with the Office07 installation. It is really a shame that they can't show the colored graphics in the list, so we could recognize the new ones by their colored scheme.

I have searched through the archives and haven't found an answer so am posting hoping someone can help.

I am running Windows Vista on my new laptop and it came with Microsoft Office 2007 Home & Student preinstalled, I purchased an activation key for it and have it activated.

I have since decided that I would like Microsoft Outlook 2007 so purchased the stand-alone program and am trying to install it from the DVD. It asked if I wanted to uninstall Outlook 2003 and I did; installation got about 3/4 of the way completed then hung and had to be closed.

I verified that Outlook 2003 has been uninstalled (it was the only Office 2003 component I had installed) and have rebooted several times but the installation hangs up at the same spot every time, about 3/4 of the way through.

Might anyone have any suggestions to help me get this installed? I see a lot of problems of the program hanging upon boot but I can't even get that far. :)

Thank you,

Responding to my own post with the fix in case anyone else comes across this problem. If you have Microsoft Expression Web installed you will need to remove it prior to the Outlook 2007 installation. Once it was removed the program installed.

First of all, it seems that the only standard way of saving files of any sort to a site is by entering the URL to the library, clicking OK, logging in (if you click "remember..." it frequently will keep remembering credentials during the session, but not if you log out) and then saving the file.

The usual way to deal with this is to copy the URL and paste it into the open file dialog box and go from there.

Sometimes, a Network place gets created, sometimes not. Whatever, if you have lots of sites on the same server you need to rename them so you can tell which is which - or you get Doc Library on Server(1), Doc Library on Server(2) and so on. While OK, it's very kludgey and a big collection with lots of sites can result in dozens of network places to sort through.

These work, but there are obvious problems. I'll add one more: users who don't know what a path is, and don't want to type or copy/paste a URL. These are usually users who never make shortcuts, don't save bookmarks (favorites) and never use the links bar in IE so they find the options too complex.

So besides dealing with the save problem - which I think I've covered indirectly - the real issue is that users are familiar with navigating file system hierarchies and don't like having to treat each library location as an entirely separate file system. This is the greatest barrier to using SharePoint for document management.

If you instead use it as one giant library, saving the path becomes straight forward, but there's no straightforward way of associating documents with collaboration sites.

Thoughts on the matter?

For me, this is a migration killer.

The problem with the URLs that you get in Favorites Center is that those are URLs to documents, not to folders. They can't be used to point to document folders.

--

Hollis Paul
Mukilteo, WA USA

When publishing, in the "file name" box, just type the entire path. For instance, if the server is called "Server1" and the document library is called "Client Data", and the document is called test.doc, type the following:

http://server1/client%20data/test.doc

(the %20 represents the space between "client" and "data")

It will go there and it will create a new network shortcut for future saves.

**************************************

Sounds like after you choose publishing, you clicked on the document server choice. I tried that, pasted in the URL before the file name, told it to go, and it put the document into the document library I had selected. I did not get a network place out of the process. I will check to see if it is there when I next boot into that client.

When I tried publishing it to a document worksite, the name field is separated from the site address field. In this case, it collects my credentials, starts the process, then says it can't do it. This user does have full admin rights to the portal and to the individual site collections, so it should work, but doesn't. I will see if putting it all on one url will work.

*****************

I tried creating a doc worksite using the one line approach but that failed. I next tried creating it as a subsite of the site I had explicitly given my user account permissions (rather than relying on inheritance) and the site was created. It did show a link in the upper left pane in which the doc worksite creation parameters were collected. But, I did not find any new links in the Network places. Also, the recent list in the open dialog box does not show where the file is stored. That is annoying. But no package is perfect.

Anyway, I consider my problems with the publishing wizard to have been permissions issues, which I don't really understand, and don't want to waste energy/time figuring it out. If Microsoft winds up committing harikari and disappears from the face of the earth, it will because it will have made its software so secure it can't be used.

--

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms771890.aspx

"Word 2007 Document Packages
The file format in Word 2007 consists of a compressed ZIP file, called a package. This package holds all of the content that is contained within the document. Using the package format decreases file size for Office documents because of the ZIP compression. The new format is also more robust to errors in transmission or handling. It allows you to manipulate the file contents using industry-standard ZIP-based tools. An easy way to look inside the new file format is to save a Word 2007 document in the new default format and rename the file with a .zip extension. Double-click the file to open and view its contents.

Note To understand the composition of a file based on Microsoft Office Open XML Formats (Office XML Formats), you may want to extract its parts. To open the file, it is assumed that you have a ZIP utility, such as WinZip, installed on your computer. To open a Word XML Format file in Word 2007:

a) Create a temporary folder in which to store the file and its parts.
b) Save a Word document (containing text, pictures, and so forth) as a .docx file.
c) Add a .zip extension to the end of the file name.
d) Double-click the file. It will open in the ZIP utility. You can see the document parts that are included in the file.
e) Extract the parts to the folder that you created earlier.
f)Integrated ZIP compression reduces the file size by up to 75 percent.

Files are further broken down into a modular file structure that makes data recovery more successful and enhances security. The new format segments files into components that you can manage and repair independently. Files created in the new format also have a distinctive file extension for each application, depending on the file type.

Assuming you have already set this, check your IE security setting. Depending on the Zone the SharePoint site is in, word may be trying to use your current network login hash (Office uses the default IE settings for security and proxy details for all http communication). You should be ale to tell IE to never send current credentials, should always prompt instead.

The blog site can be under any type of parent site.
I am readying to deploy a new intranet through Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 and we have a very mixed environment (OS's, Office versions, browsers, etc...) It seems that when new users open the portal for the first time (and them some) they get prompted to install Office components. Very undesirable. Can someone explain why this happens and how to avoid it? It would be greatly appreceiated.

One thing that comes to mind is that if you are using the server-side "Office web parts ands components", people running on back OS's and back office versions will need to install the client side equivalent "Office web parts ands components" on their PCs and that very well they could be prompted for this (or rather given an error message saying they need to access URL xxx to get it. (That particular address may no longer work, too!)

I know that OL 2007 no longer renders HTML using IE. This prevents using HTML forms in Outlook email. I know that by clicking Other Actions, then Open in Browser that the email can be opened in IE and the HTML form works as it did in Outlook 2003.

Is there any way to add a button or link within an HTML email that opens the email in IE directly? Basically, the user would open the email in IE with one click instead of two.

This question is not for me (I don't mind opening the email in IE with two clicks), it is for my users (4000). They will always prefer opening in one click. It may seem trivial, and I know that "The users need to adapt" is one response. What I would like to know if it is possible.

Thanks in advance.

No, it's not possible. There's no URL syntax for that, which means it's not possible without writing script in the HTML message, which of course Outlook won't run.

Thank you Sue. I suspect that this question will be frequently asked when OL 2007 is released to the general pubic.

I wanted to add something that may be of use to others: Displaying text at the top of the html form email when viewed by OL 2007. I added the following text just below the <body> tag.

<!--[if gte mso 12]><BR>To submit your selection using Outlook 2007 click the <STRONG>Other Actions</STRONG> button, then <STRONG>View in Browser</STRONG>.<BR><![endif]-->

Users with older versions of Outlook will not see this text. OL 2007 users will see "To submit your selection using Outlook 2007 click the Other Actions button, then View in Browser." at the top of the email. At least users will be able to know what to do without having to contact the help desk to find out.

Credit goes to Syd Low at AlienCamel for this one. He was mentioned in an article in Windows IT Pro (http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=93346&DisplayTab=Article) I found while searching for a solution. I contacted him, and he was kind enough to reply. Thanks, Syd!

Thanks for reminding about that technique. I'm working on a chapter on message body formats for my Outlook 2007 programming book this week and will be sure to include that tip. I'll also post a comment on the online article to make sure the tip is available to those readers.
