You have to go into your program files directory and delete the version of owssupp.dll you're not using (for example if you upgraded to office 2007 and then downgraded back to office 2003 you delete owssupp.dll in the office12 directory). IE 7's manage addons you can see two versions of the owssupp dll registered so IE gets confused and you have to forcefully remove the version you're not using anymore.

I installed a WinXP x64 client on a new box. With the various high priority security updates, IE7 was installed. I finally noticed that there was a drop-down arrow next to the search box, and it contained an entry for add more providers. As I noticed that one and only provided provided by default was Microsoft Live Search, and I usually use my SharePoint Portal search, or Google. I clicked it and got to a page that provides a list of known search engines, and also lets you roll your own. The instructions said to put in the url to the address of the search page. So, I used http://minotaur/Search.aspx . It said that address was bad, as the address had to include the word "TEST" in it. So I looked at the address line of a real test results page and decided to use "http://minotaur/Search.aspx?k=TEST", without the quotes. It worked. So, now, instead of browsing to the portal and then entering the text into the box, I can just type it into the IE7 search box.

Now, that uses the default scope of your SPS search. By changing the definition of the results page to http://minotaur/Search.aspx?k=TEST&s=Outlook%20support and changing the provider Name to SharePoint Using Outlook support, I was able to install the new provider and specify that scope to pull the search. Neat.

If I enter doily carte and choose the Google provider, the first result is "Richard D'Oyly Carte - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia", which is what I wanted. There were also a bunch of entries about doilies, as one would expect.
