Does anyone know what you have to do to get this to function. I was expecting that it would invoke the Outlook Contacts like it does when configuring but apparently it doesn't (yet).
Thanks for your help.

I am going to make a couple of assumptions as I try to answer, so feel free to let me know if I have anything wrong.
In the case of an out of the box Collaboration Portal template you get an Employee Lookup web part which is basically a pre-configured Search Box web part. It is basically set to target the results page for the People scope.
In order to get results to appear when you do that search you are going to need go in to Shared Services Administrator to do a User Profile import. Once you have that done you will need to go into Search Settings in the Shared Services Administrator and either fo a Full crawl on the Local Office SharePoint Server sites (if you haven't done one yet) or an incremental crawl. Once that completes you should get results when you search for names in the Employee Lookup web part.

Speaking of this...anyone aware of a user directory component/web part in Sharepoint that would include the ability to attach a user's picture to the profile? A long time request of our organization has been to create a user directory on our intranet with pictures. If there's a component to MOSS that would do that, I'd be thrilled. Well, as thrilled as one can get dealing with Sharepoint.

Out of the box MOSS has this capability. In order to use it the user would go to their MySite, click on the Details link, and then they can upload a picture. You should be able to do the same programatically, though I haven't really looked in to the user profile API and what is available there.

Hello Keith,
Thank you for taking the time to make your post. It is always great to gain insite on the inner workings of Sharepoint.
I followed your instructions below and I did not get any errors while instituting them. However, when I go to do an actual search I get a 404 Error when I click on the magnifying glass. The page it is looking for is /peopleresults.aspx
Any ideas?
Thank you again for your help.
Sincerely,
Tim

Keith,
You can ignore my last post. I figured it out. All I had to do is change the path to the location of the page in request. I discovered this path by going up to the global search dialog and selecting people and doing my search there. This would tell me two things: 1. if the search was working and 2. where the location of the missing page was.
Thank you again for getting me this far.
Sincerely,
Tim
