I am not sure which was the appropriate catagory for this topic, so I am posting it in the general group.

We have noticed that the Membership and "My SharePoint Sites" features of MOSS 2007 are not working for some users. Unfortunately, I cannot find any documentation that truly explains how this works. From what I can gather is the Membership information comes from sometype of profile import/crawl and the "My SharePoint Sites" gets updated on the client PC on a daily basis.

What we are trying to understand is why this functionality works wonderful for some of our users and not at all for others.

Some of the symptoms we have are: 1. From a SharePoint site, when the user clicks on their "My Links" link at the top of the screen, they do not have a "My SharePoint Sites" link that lists all the sites they are a membership of. 2. On the users MySite, in the "SharePoint Sites" webpart, it does not list any of the sites the user is a member of. Even clicking on the Sites, New Site Tab does not work. The membership drop down is grayed out. 3. In Office 2007, when the user does an Open or a Save and then clicks on the "My SharePoint Sites" quick link it is empty.

As stated before, this works wonderful for half our users and not at all for others. I have searched the Internet and find other people having this problem but no real solution.

Any ideas?

Who is up to the challenge of cracking this one?

Thanks in advance!

Ok -- I figured it out. After first, it was not very clear to me how this whole process works, but after reviewing the database tables related to user membership and re-reading the documentation it clicked.

For the users that are not experiencing the membership features of MOSS 2007 (ie: My SharePoint Sites, etc), they were listed in the Owners group on the SharePoint site.

The membership functionality strictly works off the users listed in the Members group of the SharePoint site.

Now thinking about this, it completely makes sense and is much clearer to me. The only thing we have to do now is insure the owner of the site is ALSO a member of the site in order for them to take advantage of the membership features.

I hope this helps someone else down the road because it definitely was not clear to me.

Paul thanks for posting a response to your own question.  I too have found that the My Site membership list will only show me memberships to the sites in which I am explicitly listed as a member within my one site collection.

Does anyone know if this functionality can span across multiple site collections within one web app or even better across web apps tied together using the same shared services provider? Seems like that wouldnt be to hard since its all using the same User Profile database but for some reason I cannot get this to work.

Also the whole thing seems like it might be somewhat worthless to me since we try to handle all permissions to our sharepoint sites through AD security groups.

For example, we have an AD security group titled "All Colleagues".  So if I simply add the "All Colleagues" AD security group to the Members Group of my "Help" site, My Site never actually sees me as a member of the Help site until I list myself individually as a member.  I find it really hard to believe this is the intended behavior.

I am wondering if anyone else has run into this problem or if perhaps I just do not have something configured properly.

From what I can gather is the Membership functionality is closely tied to your Default My Site location which is tied to your SSP.

As long as your site collections all reside under the same SPP your MySite belongs to, the membership functionality will work across the board. This is something I currently have setup in my environment now and it works great.

Remember, your memberships will be updated on the next index crawl cycle.

I personally have not tried the active directory group in the members group but if I get a chance I'll give it a shot and report back my findings.

Mine shows sub-sites -- but you have to be distinctly added to the members group of that sub-site as well.

You will notice that when you create a sub-site it automatically creates 3 new groups for that subsite. By default it puts the site creators name in the Owner and the Members group.

Some people have the tendency to remove themself as a member since they are an owner. Doing this will not allow the site to be surfaced through the membership system.

Add yourself to the members group of your sub-site and it will show up under your "My SharePoint Sites" after the next crawl.

Thank you very much for your reply.

When I add my self in mebers group to top sites , its automatically adding me as a member to all subsites. So I am a member of all subsites. But its still not showing sub sites.

Am I missing some thing?

I would appreciate your help.
