Is it possible, or is there maybe a plugin, that allows an alert to be assigned to a specific document?

For example, if I create a document library on policy or procedure, and I want the documents to be reviewed on a regular basis - say quarterly

- is it possible to tie an alert to documents so that the owner receives an email when it's time to do a documentation review?  Or if not to the document, perhaps to a directory?

No.

The lowest level of Alerts is the document library.

In order to achieve an Alert for one document you would need to have that as the only document in a document library.

There are actually 2 items here.

1.  Yes, you should be able to set an alert on a specific document, as well as to an entire document library.  The same idea holds with other lists and items as well.

2.  Alerts are generated based on actions.  So out of the box SharePoint can generate alerts when something occurs with a document, but not in the future like you are looking for.  If I understand correctly, you are looking for the ability to set a review date on a document and then have the system generate an alert in the future based on that date.  Is that correct?

I have not seen it yet, but heard that Corasworks added functionality for 'future alerts' in their last update just a week or so ago.

Without any customization or third-party products, you could create a view to help identify documents that need to be reviewed.

I hope this helps.

As your number 1 goes against everything I have read, could you give details as to how you do this, please ?

When you are in a document library (either WSS or SPS) and hover over the name of a document, the dropdown menu that becomes available should display "Alert Me" as an option.  This gives you the same interface that is available at the list level:  Your e-mail address, the change type you want to be alerted on and the alert frequency.

You can absolutely add an alert for a specific document. Are you sure

you aren't thinking of securtiy instead. You can't do that at the

document level.

There was a thread in the WSS newsgroup where I said I *thought* alerts worked the same as security - i.e. document level - and someone came into the thread and said that I was right alerts were only at document level.

Thanks, both of you, for putting me right!
