My SMTP server has a line length limit and many of my portal alerts are exceeding the limit.  So I'm getting an SMTP error, "Syntax error - line too long".  I don't control my mail system so I can't increase the limit.

Anybody have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Try a trigger on the table in sharepoint database.  Insert a line break.

I'd  rather not "tweak" the SharePoint databases unless absolutely necessary.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

There are XSL files that can be modified to alter the messages.  Look in sharepoint data\alerts\1033 directory.
