There seems to be no consistency in how alert addresses render in extranet created/oriented alerts.  I've created alerts logged into the portal via the FQDN extranet URL as an adminsitrator, sometimes when I create an alert, the alert goes out using the FQDN extranet URLs, other times it does not (i.e. people recieve it with the intranet URL and thus of course they can't resolve that address).

What explains this?  Is there a specific ordering in how one creates alerts that can gaurantee alerts return the correct URL?

Thanks for any help/assistance/feedback.

I don't think it matters how you login but rather the settings under the "Configure alternate portal site URLs for intranet, extranet, and custom access"

Start the SharePoint Central Administration web site and click on the "SharePoint Portal Server" link.   "Configure alternate portal site URLs for intranet, extranet, and custom access" is located under the "Portal Site and Virtual Server Configuration" section.
