NCAA Men's Basketball Stats

Posted Tue, Mar 15 2011 19:15 by Nate Oliver

Hello all,

It's that time of year again, where we all fill out NCAA tourney brackets. In light of this glorious time of year, I took the liberty of whipping up some team stats. There are many people who argue that using RPI alone isn't sufficient, as it doesn't account for scoring margin, i.e., how dominant these teams are in their victories in terms of points scored vs. points allowed. So, I combined the two.

In the attached file, I have combined the two, comparing Scoring Margin and RPI (an indicator of SOS). Two things to note, if the Scoring Margin reads as 1, it means I couldn't find it in the top-96 teams. Second, this does not account for key injuries heading into the tournament, e.g., BYU has lost their best big man, which is a problem.

But it's a nice, quick glance, and for the most part, it makes sense. Don't sleep on Belmont - they appear to be hard to handle!

Regards, Nate
