How To Block XP SP2 being installed via Automatic Updates

microsoft have released details and a tool to allow you to stop SP2 from being installed by the Windows Automatic Updates service.

Windows will not shut down and cannot be rebooted. Continues to flash "updates are being installed, do not turn off your computer" but never completes task. This seems to be a pretty serious glitch.
Any suggestions?

Try restore system to an earlyer time
then stop updates for the time being
