No one can deny the positive effect that Obama’s election  had in the whole world, but I’m surely missing something here…can anyone tell me why he won this prize?

Easy....

first he kick one of the biggest lord's of war from the white house, bush was there for to many time... only that is already something to win a prize...

but mainly is to avoid future war's... can you imagine wake up and see in the news, "Nobel Peace Prize, Barack Obama Start a War against XXXXXX (insert a country here)...  even if they have reason (btw there is no reason to war), the negative publicity became against themselves, not that maters but for the rest of the world they were the villans ... but this is just another conspiration theory... :)

but unless is one of these reason, i have to agree with you... simple make no sense...

hum...Andre, I'm not sure he kicked Bush. It's my understanding that he couldn't run for a third mandate, right?

regarding point 2, I think you shouldn't really disparage the influence of the great economic groups in the decisions made by the white house. And if you're thinking Iran (stopping a war topic), then probably they should give the prize to Israel's PM.

It's nothing more than to con people into believing hes better than he is. America hasn't had a real president since JFK :(

I tend to agree with Andre. I think the Nobel Committee chose him in order to promote world peace.

My problem With it is that the Nobel committee seems to have an agenda and they are using their power to promote it, when all they should do is to spot those who deserve the price for something they DID and not for something they [maybe] will do..

There you go. DID is the key...not will do...

That's actually a pretty simple one: because the Nobel Committee decided to give it to him. They get to decide who they give their own freaking prize to. I think the question you really wanted to ask was why they decided to give it to him. "According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded to the person who: “during the preceding year [...] shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”"

You can see their justification for Obama's award here:

Yes, I guess that is it: they gave it to him because they can simply give it to anyone they want. I've noticed  that "the Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons". hum...interesting...

FWIW, I think it was a really good idea to give it to him.
